I see through land records that Lessley,Coral,Wallace, and Reggie all had farms in Garfield counties in the 1920's. Was wondering if there was any decendents or info. on them. These Macks came from Loyal,Clark,WI and unfortunately Lessleys only daughter died in 1926. I was hoping someone had some more info on cemeteries where they are buried? 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: SINGLETON Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5MB.2ACE/105.2 Message Board Post: I found a couple of land entries for a "DEE SINGLETON" here, in 1921 and 1923: http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/mt/garfield/land/s.txt (scroll way down). There's another Singleton, Ernest, who got some land several township and ranges away; I dunno if he's related. These are homestead entries, and they have the township-range-section description, that will allow you to find the precise location of the land he homesteaded. Note that this is not necessarily where they lived in 1930, even if it is the right Dee Singleton; only original government homesteads appear here, not future private sales. If he sold this land and bought some down the road, it wouldn't show here. The plots listed are both in section 28 of Township 15N, Range 44 E (from the Montana Principal Meridian) -- one of 320 acres, and a second of 160 acres. Taking that data to http://www.esg.montana.edu/cgi-bin/trs-data, we find that this is latitude 47.0271°N, longitude 106.1587°W, and can be seen on the USGS map named Tree Coulee School. It's about 13 KM (8 miles) SW of Van Norman. Here's a USGS map of the section, showing how close it is to Tree Coulee School (probably a historical school, not in use): http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=47.0271&lon=-106.1587&datum=nad83&u=5 (if that link doesn't work try http://tinyurl.com/b8eyr ). You can select map size "large" for a better view, and change the resolution and navigate, but Topozone is kind of a pain in the behind; I suggest buying the USGS maps. This section is indeed barely in Garfield County, very close to McCone, and is very close to Timber Creek (the creek, not a settlement), so things are starting to make sense. There's some buildings in the lower left of the section, and a windmill in the upper right at the end of a road. The former might be a ranch, or an abandoned ranch, and it's not inconceivable that it's the old Singleton place. Since he owned 3/4 of the section, and there's only the one marked building there, there's a 3 in 4 chance it's at least in the same general spot as the homestead, if not the actual structure built by your ancestor. If you're unclear on how the township range section land description works, see this page: http://www.outfitters.com/genealogy/land/twprangemap.html If you go the Bureau of Land Management, you used to be able to see the full description of his plot. Unfortunately the fools at the BLM have taken the database offline "for security improvements"; no word on when it'll be back. You MIGHT be able to send away for a copy of his actual homestead file with just the DOCIDs and other info from the land entry I mentioned at the top of this email. There's a charge, and you'll have to send away for the form first, unless you live near an office of the National Archives: http://www.archives.gov/locations/. The form you want is "NATF Form 84". If you call your regional Archives office, they're usually very helpful folks. I can't remember what the fee is -- maybe $20 or so -- and you have to wait about three months, but you might get a very pleasant surprise -- they can range from a few pages to MANY, MANY pages, and there's a good chance you will see your ancestor's handwriting there, at least a signature. The land and the improvement! s will be described -- what kind of crops, etc. As for what's there now, I wouldn't get your hopes up. Most everybody in the county has left since 1930; there's under 1000 there now, down from 6 or 7,000. And the only way to survive ranching today is to have many thousands of acres. Most of the "roads" shown on the USGS map, with the dotted lines, are extremely rough tracks, sometimes barely visible, across ranchland. Interesting country, but not always that much to see in terms of human habitation. Finding a particular place can also be a nightmare, as the tracks don't always go quite where they say they go! But it's interesting country, and well worth exploring if you have a chance to get out that way.
