This is just to let you know the RootsWeb mailing lists are functioning again. You may now post any questions you may have been sitting on while they were not. The Archives are being re-populated, but due to their size, it is going to take some time to complete. This post should initiate that process. For detailed information on working with the new list software, see <http://home.rootsweb.ancestry.com/listindexes/listsHelp>
Greetings to all Montana Ghost Town mail list subscribers. I'd like to first thank Kathleen Burnett for one starting the Ghost Town mail list for each state and your years as the administrator of this list. My name is Fred Dittmar and I am here to offer any help and direction I can. Although I'm not living in your state I may have some information to give you directions in researching. In order to stimulate my quiet lists I'm writing to ask some questions of you the subscribers. There are 32 subscribers on this mail list at the moment. No one on the list bites or says Boo to any questions or comments so feel free to write and talk with others. Where do you live? What Ghost Town or area are you interested in? What county was your Ghost Town located in? Are there any remnants left of the town? Foundations? Buildings? Cemeteries? Do you have any information about the time line of the town? Did it have a post office? If a cemetery is there is it currently maintained? Has it been surveyed and is it posted on the internet? What's the link? Do you know if the State has posted a Historic Sign or Marker noting the town or area? Please cite any sources (book, publication, family history) you find the information in. Thank you all. This is your mail list and it only works when you post and others answer and add to it. Fred - Mail List Administrator Frederick M. I am trying to do research on the Rautio family. Isaac Johnson was the first to come to Montana and was in Marysville. He was a miner and did fairly well. So he sent for his brother's children to join him there. By this time it was 1913 and he was not in good health. Henry Rudio, his nephew, joined him and later Henry's wife and children came. If you know anything about this family, I would appreciate your help. Mary Davis
Dear List Members, If you are interested in knowing about other genealogical mailing list available, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John Fuller's Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html If you ever need to unsubscribe from this list or any Rootsweb list all you need to do is visit Password Central located at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will received an e-mail of all lists you belong to and from it you can unsubscribe from the ones you want to. Always know that I will be more than happy to help you if you are having problems unsubscribing, you only need to ask. Please send this request to KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net not to the entire list. If you would like to visit the Archived messages of this list, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you would like to search and from there you can search by dates. If you are having problem and I do not answer you right away, know that I will. I like many of you work full time outside of my home. I am fortunate that I can check my e-mail any time I wish, but know that there are spaces of time I cannot. I always check my e-mail each and every evening and will respond to message as quickly as possible. There are a few items I would like to suggest for the benefit of each of us. 1. When sending a posting to the list it would help if you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line. Doing this also might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. Many members are on many many lists and when they see a subject line that reads "My Ancestors" they just delete it. 2. When posting a query regarding a surname it would help all of us if you would put your surname in CAPS. This way the members can easily pick out the surnames you are looking for. On the other hand when the entire message is in CAPS we feel that we are being yelled at. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 5. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. 6. Now, the hardest thing is when one of our own, a fellow member becomes upset about a posting from one from one of us. It is so hard not to jump in and add our two cents. I want you to know how much I appreciate it when you just let these posting go by and delete them. Know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problem. If you ever have a concern that I might have missed a message that needs addressed you are welcome to contact me during the day at Kathleen.burnett@era.com or in the evenings at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net. 7. If your list has the gateway open, meaning the messages posted on the board also hit he list, know that every once in a while a SPAM message that is caught by the Board filter slips through the gateway and hits the list before it can be stopped. JUST DELETE IT. By responding to the list regarding he offending message, you just continue it on, and there is not one thing I can do about it at that point. Please remember, so that this list is better for each of us, the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc., in other words Spam is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and your willingness to help make this list the success it is. It is your list and is here for your benefit. If you have suggestions or comments you would like in future reports, you only need to send them to me. Jeremy, Take a look at my Montana Ghost Town webpage. _http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~gtusa/usa/mt.htm_ (http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~gtusa/usa/mt.htm) It will give you a few leads to some of the ghosts in the state. There are also a couple links to outside web pages that will lead you to some good photography sites. Hello group! Two years ago I learned that my family had lived at Belmont township in Lewis and Clark county during 1900 and 1901. At that time I contacted the MT Historical society and purchased some photos of both Belmont and the nearby town of Marysville. I now believe that they sent me photos of the wrong Belmont and that perhaps the Belmont in the photos is in either Golden Valley county or Chouteau county. I wonder if someone may be able to look at the photos and be able to recognize where this Belmont was? And also if the photos of Marysville is indeed the Marysville located approx. 15 miles NW of Helena They are posted temporarily at: http://www.frontiernet.net/~ioannes1/Montana%20Pics Thank you! Dear List Members, If you were effected by the Comcast buy out, then you need to read this, if not delete it. Just this evening, I have receive over 100 requests for me to change e-mail address to a Comcast address. Many of these requests mention multiple lists of which the sender needs their e-mail address changed. It will take me a good week or so to get through them all. My suggestion is; If you still have the ability to unsubscribe go to PASSWORD Central at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ type in your old e-mail address, and follow the directions. You will receive an e-mail from which you can unsubscribe. If you can't do this, then you will just need to re-subscribe with your new address and let the old one bounce off. To re-subscribe this go to John Fuller's mailing list site http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html or remember you can subscribe and or unsubscribe by sending only the word UNSUBSCRIBE or SUBSCRIBE to XXXXXX-L-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM or XXXXXX-D-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM if you are on the Digest List. Naturally change the XXXXXX to the name of the list. If all else fails, contact me, but be understanding if it takes me a while to get to you. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
Dear List Members, It is that time of year when some of you will be leaving on Vacations. You might want to consider unsubscribing from the list while you are gone and then resubscribing when you return. The easiest way to do this is by using Password Central. http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will receive a e-mail list of all Rootsweb Mailing Lists you belong to. You can unsubscribe using this e-mail. Save it and you then have a list of mailing lists you want to re-subscribe to. When you return, you can check the Archives for this list at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ Just type in the name of the list and you can check the messages for the dates you were gone. The following was shared with me and I think it is one of the best Maps I have seen showing the growth and history of the United States. http://www.animatedatlas.com/movie.html I appreciate each of you and know that it is because of you our list is the success it is. The US Ghost Town site is located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~usghstwn/ There are many states still available for adoption. If you are interested, contact Doris Robbins demwr@netzero.net If the state you are interested in is already adopted, consider volunteering for a county within that state, to do that contact the Web Host for the state. Dear List Members, It is time again for one of my information messages. First of all I want to thank each of you who go out of your way to follow the list rules. I belong to many lists in my research and truly feel you are the best list members out there. If you are enjoying this list and would like to know what other genealogical lists Rootsweb has for you, go to John Fuller's site located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html It is the best source for Genealogical mailing lists that I know of. If you would like to visit the archived messages for this list or any Rootsweb List you may go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com and type in the name of the list and from there you can search by date. There is a great Rootsweb site, Password Central, you can go to if you want to find out what Rootsweb lists you are a member of or need to unsubscribe from a list, just follow the instructions. http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ To unsubscribe from any Rootsweb list send only the word UNSUBSCRIBE to XXXX-L-REQUEST@ROOTSWEB.COM Naturally exchange the XXXX with the name of the list and the L with a D if you are on the Digest List. I have very few rules on the lists I take care of; the main one is to treat your fellow members as you would like to be treated, also Roll Calls will be called by me, with a beginning date and an ending date. The posting of virus warnings, chain letters, political announcements, current events and test messages are NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me, KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net Please remember that I am here, working behind the scenes. When an offending message is posted, just DELETE it. Know that I am most likely taking care of the problem personally with the person who posted the message. When you send your unhappiness to the list you just continue on the problem both for the members and for myself. If you are concerned that I have missed the message, you can send me a message at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net. Would you like to see the growth in the United States between 1650 and 1983? This is a great visual. I have shared it before but I am sure we have many new members since then. http://www.ac.wwu.edu/~stephan/Animation/us.gif This is your list. I am only here to take care of it for you and to make sure it runs smoothly. If you have any ideas or suggestions, please feel free to send them to me. Dear List Members, I look forward to the year 2003 being a great one for our list. Because of the amount new members we have subscribing every day, I feel it is time to again post the suggested rules of the list...even us long time members need reminding once in a while. 1 I have very few rules on the lists I watch over. The main one is to treat your fellow members as you would like to be treated. Also the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc. (in other words - spam) is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me Kathleen Burnett KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net 2. If someone posts a message to the list that should not have been posted, please just delete it. Know that I am taking care of the problem. When you post your unhappiness, then you just continue on the problem. I know it is hard when your heart has been offended, but for my sake, and the sake of the list, please just delete it. Rootsweb has a wonderful Spam Detective and it stops most of it. You should see what comes across my screen. I have to look at each of them to make sure that what was stopped was truly Spam. Once in a while, one slips by though and if this happens, just delete it and go on with what we all love, genealogical research. Some suggestions to make our list run smoother are: 1. If you would put information such as names, places, and dates relating to your posting, in the subject line, it might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. 2. Please remember to delete the taglines and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 3. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. If you do notice that one of our members has a virus, please do not post their name and e-mail address across the list. Let me know and I will take care of the problem. Most likely the member already knows and is in a major state of stress. Receiving messages of each of us will only cause his or her stress level to rise. 4. Please remember, we have members from all walks of life, all ages and all levels of education on our list. Be understanding. The very person who mis-spelled every other word in their posting could be the very one with your missing family bible in their attic. Some sites to remember: 1. There is a great Rootsweb site, Password Central, you can go to if You want to find out what Rootsweb lists you are a member of or need to unsubscribe from a list, just follow the instructions. http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ 2. If you would like to visit the archived messages for this list you may go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you want to see the archives for. From there you can search by date. 3. Dear List Members, On Monday, December 23, I begin my Christmas Holiday week. I am spending it with my four children, their wives and husbands and my 9.5 grandchildren. It will be the first time in over 10 years I have had all my children with me for Christmas. I am thrilled to say the least. It is hard, as many of you know, when all of your children and grandchildren live thousands of miles from you. As you have already guessed, I will not be spending as much time as usual online watching over your list, but I will be back to full time on Tuesday, December 31st. I have also chosen not to have a list-sitter watch you while I am away. I really do not think you need one. I will be checking in each evening after the grandchildren and down for the day. If there is a problem which you think I need to address, send a personal message to me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net. I will check those first thing each night. If off topic messages are sent or if suddenly someone calls for a Roll Call, please just let it pass. Just smile and remember what I would say and hit that delete button. I will take care of the problems for you as soon as I check in. I have the best lists on Rootsweb and the greatest members so I know you will be just fine. I wish for each of you and yours a special Holiday Season filled with love, friendship, friends and family. I thank each of you for your friendship and for your support this past year. You fill my my world. Kathleen Burnett List Mom
