As our name implies we serve students from four counties in MS that have been kicked out of school for various reasons. Students of QCAS have worked in conjunction with members of the Oktibbeha County Historical and Genealogical Society (OCHS) and the Sessums Community Cemetery Board to survey the Sessums Community Cemetery (a local African American cemetery)as part of a county-wide effort to locate and survey all cemeteries. > The students, assisted by professionals, had hands-on experience using survey equipment and did primary research. They then collated their research and entered the information into a computer database. The information they gathered is part of a document being published by the OCHS. > >While doing this project we became aware of the lack of documentation of African American cemeteries in this state. We are currently working to expand our service project to include African American cemeteries in the four counties that are home to our students: Oktibbeha, Choctaw, Winston and Noxubee. > >We'd like to coordinate our information with you and wonder if you have contacts with people in these counties (or elsewhere) that may be interested in coordinating projects with us.
