I am pursueing the possibility that my GGgrandmother was of Choctaw or Chicksaw heritage. She was married to Johnson SHIVERS in 1860 Winston County and then , after her husband's death in the CW, to John C MCELROY in 1864 in Winston County. Her birth was aproximately 1843 and I have a photo of her that I had reproduced from a tintype given to me by my grandmother years and years ago. Although I have no evidence of it, she appears to be Native American. I have bought two books on the Choctaw of MS but would like to study more history of this period in Mississippi. Can anyone suggest a book or two that would be helpful in understanding how the assimulation of Native Americans into MS society took place in the 1830-1860s ? Who was the friend, Betty HOWARD, who accompanied Priscilla to get her deceased husband's CW Pension paycheck ? In the MS 1850 Census of Winston County, there is an Elizabeth NEWMAN, age 65 from GA, listed along with 10 yr old Prudy NEWMAN, and 8 yr old Seborn NEWMAN. In the Census of 1860 in Winston County MS, there is a Priscilla NEWMAN living with BF CARR and his wife, Elizabeth and an 8 yr old boy, Jefferson STRAIT. Priscilla is 23 yrs old in this census and might have been living with the CARR family just before her marriage. Does anyone know of either of these families. Thanks in advance for your help. Molly
