    2. Louis Taunton
    3. Hi Elinor: Unfortunately, no newspapers exist for Winston in that time. Tomorrow at work, will look for the Secretary of State's address for the state of Mississippi and you can write him and see what they could turn up. Also, what religion was Mr. Owings? On a long shot, he might have been written up in one of their state news letters. Also, may have been written up in The Macon Beacon of Macon (Noxubee County) MS newspaper - adjoins Winston and they have files on microfilm that can check for you when I go to the State Archives in Jackson some time in the future. Was he serving when he died? Let me know more and perhaps I can help. 2. Louis, are there any papers that date January, 1871? I'm looking for a man, William Butler Owings, that was supposed to have represented Winston County in the state legislature. He died in January, 1871. I've been trying for a while now to find where he was buried. Do you have any ideas? Thank you. Elinor Smith

    3. My connection to Winston Co., MS is through my husband's great grandmother being born in Winston Co., in 1840. She was Eliza Winnefred SCOGGIN GREENLEE, the daughter of William Harvey Scoggin and Mary Ann Stephens YOUNG. Her parents were married in Winston Co., January 10, 1839. Eliza Winnifred was one of twelve children and her siblings were Mary Caroline, Thomas Earl, James Madison, Lydia Elizabeth, Henry Polk, William Franklin, Laura Melissa, John William, Samual Andros, and Annie Mae. I believe all twelve were born in Winston Co. Eliza Winnifred and David Jasper Newton Greenlee were married in 1855, at Enterprise, MS. He died in 1875 and she and most of her children moved to TX by the turn of the century. DJN is buried at Hickory, MS. I have quite a bit of information on this family and will be glad to exchange what I have in my data base. Dortha McElroy Greenlee

    3. Unfortunately, there are not any newspapers that we have copies of for this time frame; earliest newspapers - one copy of The Winston Index dated 1870; The Winston Signal starting in the 1880s through 1894 when Mr. Newsom, the editor, sold his paper to Mr. Will Hight, who started The Winston County Journal that is still being printed today. Louis Taunton, Louisville, MS -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi Louis, You probably know this already: Will Hight's mother, Mary Sommers Richardson Hight, was a sister to Margaret Elvira Richardson, the wife of Charles Cagle. They were daughters of Benjamin Richardson and Margaret Murray who had moved to Louisville in early 1848. The Cagles followed late in 1850. I have a good picture of Will. Ben Richardson had a hotel in Louisville and according to your book, "Winston Signal" page 141 (many thanks), he may have been a partner in publishing "Alert" in 1855. The article only gives the publishers as "Peake & Richardson" so may/may not be Ben but I know he had had a newspaper before. Your books are a treasure! Dana Meara
