    1. RE: [MSWINSTON] J.A. Savage
    2. Jerry L. Butler
    3. Jim, I recall now that I had already added these two obituaries to the Winston Co. MSGenWeb site. I have you as the source but did not include your email address. Shall I add your email address to the two Savage obituary pages? Do you know if Drucilla and Peter Crawford had a sister named Sarah, born about 1815 in SC? Sarah Crawford Butler lived in Winston Co. from 1846 until her death about 1852 but I haven't been able to connect her to the Crawford family. I would very much like to connect with someone researching the Crawford family in Winston Co. Jerry Jerry L. Butler Winston Co. 3. I have often found obscure mentions of relatives in the probate court minute books. Another idea would be to check through land and property deeds from around that time up through about the next 30 years or so to see if any of the family had to sell off some of the family land. I've even found some relatives having family land seized for back taxes. In my own particular family, ownership of the land apparently was trasferred to the adult children after the parents died (without benefit of any will or probate settlement that I could find), and the only record I found of that joint ownership was a deed recorded about 30 years later when one of the brothers wanted to buy out his siblings' shares. All of the children's names (and husbands' names of the daughters) as well as the city and state of residence for those children living out of state were clearly identified in this particular land transaction. This deed was a close to a will as I was able to find. It was very exciting! Perhaps one of these tangents will help you as they helped me. Good luck! 3. Francis: I wish you luck on Jennie's ancestry - I have not had much. Over time, I have heard from Cheatham families trying to place her in their research but I have found no proof to back up any of their various claims. We know that she married Pink almost immediately after he was released from POW Camp so perhaps her brother/father had served with him. She also had a brother named Jonathan T. Cheatham who lived in Wadley (Jefferson Co.) GA and visited her in Louisville. This brother makes me lean toward those who say she was the daughter of James L. Cheatham and Martha Matthews on the 1850 and 1860 Census of Jefferson Co. GA. However, their daughter is listed on the census as "Jane". Another point of interest is that this Cheatham family also had a son named "Louis". Any help appreciated!! 1. Re: [MSWINSTON] OBIT look ups ?
    2. Louis, here is what I know of William Bultler Owings. He was born in South Carolina on 13 October 1815. Married in South Carolina to Cicely Ann Jenkins on 14 March 1839. William Butler Owings was a Methodist minister, being licensed to preach in October 1844. He traveled in the Alabama Conference from 1856-59. He moved to Columbus, Lowndes Co., Mississippi before 1860 (1860 Lowndes Co. MS census, pg.25). He served as First Lieut. Co. "F" 35th Miss. Infantry of the C.S. Army in the Civil War. He was severely wounded at Vicksburg and released from the army on 25 August 1863 upon the doctor's recommendation. He and his family moved to Louisville, Winston Co., Miss. (1870 census, pp 3.11). He represented Winston Co. in the Mississippi Legislature in 1870-71 and died while serving in the legislature. His funeral was from the Methodist Church in Jackson. (Rev. William Butler Owings' obituary in "New Orleans, Louisiana Christian Advocate" April 6, 1871). I have a copy of that obit. He must be buried somewhere in Mississippi. His son, Adolphus John Owings and his family stayed in Mississippi until A. J.'s death and the death of his mother, Cicely. The family then moved to Alabama. I believe this was around 1890. I would sure love to find where W. B. Owings is buried. I believe his son would probably be buried with him. They were both in the C. S. Army together, in the same company, with Adolphus staying until the end of the war. I would truly appreciate any further info I can find on this man. Thank you. Elinor Smith
