    1. [MSWINSTON] Rye Fulcher's Death
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Fulcher Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GMB.2ACI/728 Message Board Post: I am interested in knowing if there are old newspaper articles about the shooting death of Rye Fulcher in 1906 in Winston County. My grandmother always told me he was shot by a fellow named Kitchens. Apparently my great-grandfather didn't approve of this guy courting his niece (last name Marsh) and when he tried to stop him they quarreled and later Rye received a fatal shot. I've heard the story told that Rye was actually shot through a window while playing the piano. Its an interesting piece of family history and I'd like to read the story as it was reported back then.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GMB.2ACI/727.1 Message Board Post: Lettie Long was Frances Letitia Long (1831-1908) who was married on 9 Oct. 1856 in Winston County to Samuel Edward Haimes (1823-1901). Lettie's brother Henry Long was bondsman with Sam Haimes in obtaining the marriage license. Their marriage was performed by Methodist minister James Oliver Woodward. Sam and Lettie Haimes lived in the Gum Branch community in northern Winston County. Their farm was located at the intersection of the Louisville-Houston Road and the Webster-New Prospect Road, north of the Noxubee Creek. They were the parents of four sons and two daughters. Sam and Lettie Haimes were buried in the cemetery at Antioch Baptist Church, along with many members of their family. A photograph of Sam and Lettie with their youngest daughter Virginia was included in the 1980 book Winston County And Its People. One of their sons, Robert Boyd Haimes (1859-1944), was married first to Nancy Alice "Allie" Porter (1862-1893). Allie Porter Haimes was a sister of Lucy Susannah Porter (1860-1886) who married John R. Bailey. Lucy and Allie both died young and were buried in the cemetery at Antioch Baptist Church. They were the two youngest sisters of my maternal great grandfather Porter. A photograph of Lucy and Allie with their mother Nancy Wallace Porter also was included in the book Winston County And Its People. Lucy was the mother of two daughters, and Allie was the mother of four sons and one daughter. I do not know the specific connection between the Bailey family and the Long family. As I have not located the marriage record for George and Mary Bailey, the parents of John R. Bailey, I do not know if Mary's maiden name was Long.

    3. Thanks Peggy for looking up that marriage record. Since Henry Long was bondsman, I wonder if this Frances L. Long Hames would have been the Letty for whom I am looking. Does anyone out there have any information on the Hames / Haimes families that might help clarify this family? Much appreciated!!! Mary K. 1. [MSWINSTON] Baileys, Hoods, and Longs
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Bailey, Hood, Long, Porter, Whitten Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/GMB.2ACI/727 Message Board Post: Is there anyone out there who can share information with me on any of the following families? Mary C. Bailey, wife of George T. Bailey, was born 1831 in SC, died 1906, and was buried at Antioch Cemetery. Mary and George may have had children Caroline (b. 1850), William (1853), and John (1856). John may have married a Lucy Porter, daughter of William and Nancy Porter. Lucy Bailey, wife of J.R., is also buried at Antioch. On the 1850 Winston census, George & Mary Bailey were living two houses down from John and Jane Long, next door to Abner, Paulina, and George S. Hood. On the 1860 census, Mary Bailey and her children are living with the widowed Jane Long and her two grown sons Henry W. and John N. Long. Is this Mary Bailey kin to the Longs? On the 1850 Winston Census, John and Jane Long are living next door to Abner, Paulina, and George S. Hood (all are in their late 20's). John and Jane Long have a child Elizabeth (age 16) in their household. Winston marriage records show that George S. Hood married Elizabeth Long in 1856. I found a G.S. and S.E. Hood on the 1860 Winston census with son A.R. (born 1858). According to an 1852 probate record in Winston County for John Long, John and Jane Long apparently had another daughter named Letty in addition to daughter Elizabeth, son Henry and son John. I don't know anything else about Letty. Does the Winston County marriage book (first one) have a marriage for a Letty Long to anyone? The reason I am seeking information on these families is because John N. Long, son of John and Jane Long, married my Lucinda Whitten in 1867. She died first sometime after 1885, and he died in 1896, leaving two orphaned daughters (names unknown but would have been born after 1867). If Letty Long, Elizabeth Long Hood, and Mary Bailey were his sisters, would they perhaps have taken in one of his daughters to rear as their own? Anyone who can help shed light on these families will be very much appreciated! Thanks! Mary K. Johnson http://www.geocities.com/look4whittens/pleaschildren.html
