    1. [MSWINSTON] Etiquette on List
    2. Louis Taunton
    3. Something needs to be said about common courtesy or etiquette for the Winston County List. Seemingly, lately several people will ask a question concerning a family or fact pertaining to Winston County. When an answer is posted to the list a simple "thank you" should be in order and thus posted or mailed privately to the person answering the question or query. Looking back over the last six months, the "thank you" notes have not been forthcoming. This is rude and violates the rule of common courtesy in genealogy. It fits in the class with - "Send me all you have on the ______ Family." My time, like everyone's is limited, and IF I or anyone else answers a query, then "thank you" should be sent. This is a sure way to harm this or any other list. Hope the guilty parties will adhere to this constructive message. I am not trying to get a "war" started, just an observation. If you want to flame me, do not answer on this list, you may address me at: [email protected] Louis Taunton

    2. Ken: This cemetery is actually in Winston Co. Think you got directions from Louisville. All the Choctaw Co Cemetery Book says is it is located in the NW 1/4 of Sec 6, Twp. 16N, Rgn. 12E of the Tombigbee National Forest. It is on County Rd. 954. Peggy

    1. Re: [MSWINSTON] Blackwood Cemetery Location/Directions Please?
    2. Try this for directions to the Blackwood Cemetery; 1) In Ackerman, start at route 15 and Cherry Street, go east. 2) Continue on Cherry thru Tuscan. 3) Go left on Webster Road (Sides Avenue goes to the right) - 4) Go left on Choctaw Lake Road. Stay on this road until it passes into Winston County. Cemetery in on left side of road about 150 yards into Winston County. If you get to the powerline you have passed it, back up about 200 yards. About 5.5 miles from the start. Location is N 33D 16M 53S, W 089D 16M 23S id you have a GPS unit. 1. [MSWINSTON] Blackwood Cemetery Location/Directions Please?
    2. Ken, I have been there several times but do not know the directions from Ackerman. But if you can find the Gum Branch Baptist Church, the cemetery is easy to find. Below are the directions from "Winston Co., MS Cemeteries" by Hazel Garrett and Louis Taunton: Blackwood (formerly Crawford) Cemetery is located in the SW 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Sec. 6, Twp 16N, R12E in the Tombigbee National Forest. From Gum Branch Church, drive west on the Gum-Branch-Ackerman Road for 4.4 miles. Cemetery is on your right and a few hundred yards from the Choctaw Co. Line. Dana

    3. Hello all: Could someone who either has been to or knows how to find this cemetery please give me directions to get to it? All I know is that it is in the National Forest and near the county line - and that may not even be right :-) I have never been there and would like to take some photos of my ancestor's headstones. Any starting point of reference will be fine - like maybe from Sturgis or Ackerman? Thanks for any help. 1. [MSWINSTON] Stuart Reunion
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GMB.2ACI/747 Message Board Post: Hello Cousins, June 1, 2003 is the big day! The annual Stuart Reunion will be held in Neshoba County at Old Pearl Valley Baptist Church in the fellowship hall. We would like to invite all descendants, and friends, of William Davis Stuart and Hannah Jones Stuart to attend. Please bring family photos (old and new) to the reunion. I plan to have a computer with a scanner there so we can scan your valued photo “while you wait”. This way you can take it home with you and not worry about someone else “borrowing” and losing it. When we get all of them scanned I will “burn” a CD of our “Family Photos” for all that want one. This way we can all have copies printed for our collection of family photos. I will mail CD’s to all who request them for the cost of postage only! We can add to this collection each year if people are interested. William Davis Stuart was the first of our family to move to Mississippi in 1850. He and his wife, Hannah Jones were recorded in the 1850 Winston County Census with their new baby girl, Mary Lodocia Ann “Polly” Stuart. A mighty big name to hang on a little baby! Hannah Jones was the daughter of Madison Dudley Jones and Hannah Stainton Jones. The Jones family moved to Neshoba County from Monroe County, AL in the late 1840’s. Both families and many of their descendants are buried in Old Pearl Valley Baptist Church Cemetery. The known children of William Davis (1823-1907) and Hannah Stuart (1833-1904) are as follows: 1. Mary Lodocia Ann “Polly” Stuart (1850-1902) married John Thomas "Jack" Talbert (1855-1939). (Some of these descendants spell the name Tolbert. Meltons and Nowells married daughters of Polly.) 2. Hanna Elizabeth Stuart (1852-about 1931) married William A. "Bill" Rowe. (Agents and Bealls married daughters of Hannah.) 3. Josephine "Jody" Stuart (1853-1911) married John K. Talley (1855-1911). (Tindols, Breazeales, and Jones married daughters of Jody.) 4. William M. "Bud" Stuart (1856-1931) married Texanna D. Marshall (1848-1920). (Daughters of Bud married Hisaws and Agents.) 5. Sarah G. "Bigger" Stuart (1857-1894) married William Arthur Talbert, II (brother of Jack) (1854-1938). (This family moved to Texas and we have mostly lost contact with descendants. Daughters married Downings and Balfours.) 6. George W. Stuart (1859-1944). Uncle George was a confirmed bachelor! 7. Missouri Stuart (1860-1878) died before marriage. 8. John Leroy Stuart (1861-1935) married Martha Elizebeth Tindol (1866-1954). (Daughters married Darbys, Perrys, and Harbours.) 9. James Monroe Stuart (1863-1947) married Nancy Emma Musgrove and moved to Oklahoma and Texas. (Daughters married Moores and Terrys. Many of these descendants attend the MS reunion each year.) 10. One of the twins, Henry Newton Stuart, M.D. (1867-1929) married Cora Mae McKay (1871-1934) and moved to Leake County. (Daughters married Murphys and Davis.) 11. The other twin, Jasper Marion Stuart, M.D. (1867-1917) married first to Lillian Chenault, who died shortly after they moved to Arkansas. He then married Alice Hyde (1879-1964). (Their one daughter married a Thompson. Descendants of this family often come to the MS reunion.) 12. Thomas Franklin Stuart (1875-1933) married Anna Ethel Stokes (1879-1921). (Tom’s daughters married Hills, Goodins, and Alfords.) Also, everyone be thinking about some family story (try to keep it factual!!) that we might be able to put together in a Stuart Book some day. These photos we are sharing would also be included if we ever do a book. Contact: George Stuart 26319 Hwy. 35 N. Raleigh, MS 39153 601-782-9497 [email protected] Thanks, George Stuart

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Skeen, Wilson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GMB.2ACI/740.1.2.1 Message Board Post: I can add some information about the Skeen family line that I am researching and a few other pieces of information, but I do not think that this helps any of us draw conclusions. Here is a collection of information from my internet-based research: The relation of Keziah Skeen to John W. Skeen is intriguing because, as you point out, (1) they had the same surname; (2) they were both in Winston County, Mississippi at the same time; and (3) Sarah Ann Skeen (nee Wilson) is found in the same household (of Frank Maxwell) as Keziah (Skeen) Tankesley in Attala County, Mississippi in 1880. This suggests a relationship of some sort. On the other hand, Keziah was born in Kentucky and her parents apparently came from Maryland (father) and South Carolina (mother). Saran Ann Skeen (nee Wilson) married John W. Skeen, who apparently was born in 1802 in Laurens, South Carolina (I have not been able to confirm this). One researcher has further traced this line to Berkeley, South Carolina (John W.'s father was born in 1765 in Berkeley, South Carolina), and then to Scotland (John's father was born in 1740 in Scotland, with his ancestors coming from Tapsom, Scotland). I'm suspicious of this information because three three generations! of Skeens were said to have married women with the same first name, Rebecca. But the South Carolina connection is clear, and this suggests that Keziah's Skeen ancestry in Maryland would have to be traced back to South Carolina to make a connection with John W. Skeen's line in South Carolina. There is another Skeen family in Winston County, Mississippi in the 1850 census to which I cannot make a connection with my Skeen family from Attala County (the counties share a border). This record notes a Kentucky connection (Keziah was born in Kentucky): 1850 census for Winston County, MS 30 321 326 Skeen Solomon 47 M Blacksmith Ky 31 321 326 Skeen Nancy 42 F Geo. Skeen's family listed: 25 1028 1028 Skeen John 48 M . Farmer 40 S Carolina 26 1028 1028 Skeen Sarah A. 25 F . . . Ala. 27 1028 1028 Skeen Savilla 8 F . . . Miss 28 1028 1028 Skeen John W. 5 M . . . Miss 29 1028 1028 Skeen Solomon 4 M . . . Miss There are Wilsons listed in this census as well, but I cannot make a connection to Sarah Ann Skeen (nee Wilson). I have also found on the web the following marriage record. If these are ancestors of John W. Skeen, then the family researcher making a connection to Tapsom, Scotland is probably in error, since she has the Skeens coming from Scotland after 1740, but this record in South Carolina is for 1728.
