Louis, thank you for you information. Are you familiar with a newspaper called Macon, Mississippi Beacon or something like that. In 1879, Wm Butler's son, Butler Spillman Owings was shot and killed at Fern Springs in Winston County. Apparently, this information was obtained from this newspaper. This was only about 8 1/2 years after his father's death. I was wondering if this paper was operating in 1871? Again, thank you. I will try to follow some of your suggestions. Elinor
That is where I sent my money, the Archives in Jackson. As I said, they cashed my check but would not reply. I even wrote them a second time and still no reply. Thanks anyway. Elinor
Elinor: Since William Butler Owings died in January, 1871, I suggest that you get someone in Jackson, MS look at the newspaper microfilm which covered the State - The Clarion-Ledger. Since he was in Jackson and in the Legislature, this would have certainly have been news. Sorry that you were treated so shabby by the Archives Department as they are usually very good on responding. If this is the case of no response, I suggest that photocopy the check and write a letter of complaint to the Director, MS State Department of Archives and History. IF the Dept. of Archives and History searched and did not find anything, at least they should have written you or if they used up the time that your money paid for they should have let you know. Now I know they receive many "crazy" requests, but yours seems reasonable. May not do any good, but at least you will have tried. There were not any newspapers preserved for Winston County in 1871 - the earliest that we have is the 1880s - the Winston Signal and in 1892 the one that still serves our rural county, The Winston County Journal. Hope this helps some. I'm trying to verify that my GGG Grandfather, William Butler Owings, served in the legislature for Winston County. He was elected 1870 and died January, 1871, while serving in office. His funeral was from the Jackson Methodist church. I have sent money to Jackson for any information they might have but they cashed my check and would never reply. Is there another way to verify this? Was there perhaps a newpaper from around Winston County that would have archives that would have reported his death? He was a Methodist minister and I do have a copy of his obit from a Methodist publication. I was hoping I would get info from Jackson and perhaps a picture existed of the 1870 legislature. I was also hoping they would have info on where he was buried. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Elinor

This may be of interest to those researching the Lee family between Plattsburg, Winston County & Arlington, Neshoba County. -----Original Message----- From: pkmurphy [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, June 14, 2003 9:44 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [MISSISSIPPI] Seeking John Lacy Lee, son of Daniel Martin Lee of Neshoba Co., MS Greetings from Canada, I'm looking for John Lacy Lee, a son of Daniel Martin Lee (born 10 February 1853) in Neshoba Co., MS, and of Mary Humphery (married Daniel on 28 September 1879). John Lacy Lee's paternal grandparents were Evan Ludbrook Lee (born 16 October 1822 in Alabama, died 1 January 1900 in Neshoba Co., Mississippi) and Nancy McIntyre (born April 1824 in Mississippi, died 31 December 1896, Philadelphia, Neshoba Co., Mississippi). John Lacy Lee's father Daniel Martin Lee may have gone to Indian Territory, now part of Oklahoma, to join Daniel's sisters Arelia Lee (married William Paris Hickman) and Martha Jane Lee (Mattie - married William Lace Allford). A brother, John Malcolm Lee, did join the sisters in the Choctaw Nation. Any leads on John Lacy Lee, his brothers and sisters, or what became of his father Daniel Martin Lee, would be very much appreciated. Best regards, PK Murphy in Toronto, Ontario, Canada ______________________________
Here, Here, I fully agree what is being said. A little known thing called manners is what is needed. I always try to express my appreciation to those who have helped me. There are so many people out there with little bits of knowledge that when they are pieced together they make up your family tree. I am researching the Warrens and Fortenberry's. Anything that I ever get always follows with a thank-you. Good luck to all fellow researchers. Susan Shoffner

Having done genealogy for a number of years I have to agree with this, I will send a little of what I have and if the person does not respond with a thank you and some information I will drop them. Even if you think the person already has the information you have send it anyway its a good way to verify that dates, places etc. are correct. If you disagree you can match where the info. came from and decide which is correct or if that does not happen you can carry both dates with a note as to where the info. comes from. I am researching the following Winston County Families ARNETT-CROWELL-MITCHELL-WHITTEN- and related famlies. By the way I think this is a great site and has been a big help to a southerner who is now living up north. Faye
