I apologize to board members. I attempted to send the subject obituary as an attachment. However, it is an Adobe PDF document and I wasn't aware that was outside the rules and it appears to have been translated as junk. Please forgive me for the mess. For those interested I have an obituary for Elizabeth Rose Rainey, wife of James Palmer. Elizabeth Rose Rainey, my gg-grandmother, was born November 1839 and died April 1928. The obituary was recorded in the Winston County Journal on July 6th, 1928. I will be happy to email it to anyone who is interested. It is approximately 480 kilobytes in size, so be sure your email will handle it before requesting. I also have obituaries for Alexander Jarvis Palmer, my great-grandfather; Gilbert Chesley Palmer, my grandfather; and Dorothy W. Palmer, my mother; as well as numerous Goodins. However, none of these have been scanned and converted. Thanks, Tony
This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/GMB.2ACI/754.1 Message Board Post: I am a descendant of Isaiah Wallace through his daughter Nancy, who married William Morrison Porter in 1848 in Winston County. Isaiah Wallace was born in the late 1790s in Greene County, TN, the son of William Wallace and wife Grace Harrison Wallace who had married there in 1791. The Wallace family moved to Lawrence County, AL, in the early 1820s; William Wallace died there in 1826 and Grace in 1833. Isaiah's name appears several times as "Josiah" in the settlement of Grace's estate, probably due to misreading by the court clerk. Isaiah Wallace was married in Lawrence County to Susannah Heard Standifer, the daughter of Skelton Standifer and his first wife Elizabeth Thornberry. Susannah was born in 1800 in Oglethorpe County, GA, and was named for her grandmother Susannah Heard, wife of Israel Standifer. The Standifers had moved to GA from Henry County, VA, and then moved from GA to Madison County, AL. By 1829 Isaiah and Susannah Wallace had moved from Lawrence County, AL, to Monroe County, MS. They moved to Oktibbeha County in the 1830s and on to Noxubee County by 1839. Isaiah Wallace died in northern Noxubee County in 1842 and is said to be buried in an unmarked grave in the cemetery at the original site of Prairie Grove Baptist Church. Susannah Wallace moved her family to Winston County to be near her sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and William Hudson. Susannah died in 1868 and is buried in the cemetery at Antioch Baptist Church in northern Winston County. I inherited Isaiah's leather bound journal which dates from the 1830s, and I have documents belonging to Susannah. Among Susannah's belongings is a cased tin type photo of her son James R. Wallace who died at Vicksburg in 1863. Are you a descendant of Isaiah and Susannah Wallace?
Dear George, Thanks so much for your response to my query. My first Sharp ancestor was William Sharp who was in Morgan Co., GA. We don't know much about him at this time. His son was John Floyd Sharp married Martha Adcock in Fayette Co., GA in 1825. They lived in Merewither Co., GA for a time, moved to Chambers Co., AL and lived in those areas which included Lee, Russell and Macon Counties. They lived and died in Eclectic, Elmore, AL and are buried at Chana Creek Cem. in Eclectic. Their oldest son, John William Henry Sharp was born in 1826 in Fayette Co., GA. and the story was he went to MS prior to the Civil War. As previously mentioned, he and his wife lived and died in Newton Co., MS. As far as I know, I have no connections to Greene Co., AL, at least nothing found at this time. Thanks again and good hunting to you. Molly: I am almost hesitant in answering your query as I do not have all my information in front of me. John McElroy who was born 16 April 1807 in Georgia was married (1) Frances _________ (will have to look up her name) had children one of them being the John McElroy who married Priscilla Shivers. John, Sr. married (2) Frances Gainey - a 15 year old and he had grown children much older than her and they had a housefull of children - one of them being Annie Elizabeth McElroy who was my wife's grandmother. Annie married Peter Columbus Myres. John and Frances and Annie and Peter are all buried in Smallwood Cemetery in the western part of Winston County. I have not worked on the McElroy Family in several years, so am rusty in all of this and do not at the present time have time to pull out records in my 100 plus boxes. Will try to find out the email of the McElroy expert who lives in the next county. Hope this helps some. Hello all, I have recently completed transcribing the index to the "Confederate Pensions 1892-1895" record book in the Winston County Chancery Clerk's office. The names are listed in the order in which they were written in the index (more or less). Thus they are grouped by beginning letter of surname but not listed in alphabetical order. Unfortunately, it appears that not all letters of the alphabet were represented. I have also included a list of the questions that were asked on this pension application to give you an idea of the type of information that can be gained from them. Please contact or visit the Winston County Chancery Clerk for more information on obtaining copies of an individual's application. The transcribed index can be viewed on my website at this address: http://www.geocities.com/look4whittens/1892pensions.html I have also placed a link on my Winston County Genealogy Links page, which can be accessed also directly from our county web site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~mswinsto/ Thanks and good luck to you all!
