    1. [MSWILKIN] A...CAMPBELL SURNAME DNA Project...Nov 2006
    2. Lisa Grimes
    3. Good afternoon to all, Back in July and August...I posted on the rootsweb CAMPBELL and LA Parish lists looking for the whereabouts of living CAMPBELLs. I am hoping to find male CAMPBELL's, possibly my cousins, for the main CAMPBELL DNA Project... The GOALS ARE to define all of the CAMPBELL lines...via DNA. My own personal interests are...to prove the connections for several cousins who know they’re connected, and at this present time...they have no way to prove it with any recorded evidence. To identify the high probability...of our lateral lines. *S* TODAY...I AM AGAIN...TAKING THE TIME TO POST, as I continue the hunt for CAMPBELL Cousins. We know there are lots of cousins. Some may have left NC before 1787 for GA. Some left GA for LA. Some landed in AL-MS. Some stayed in GA. If some of our family traditions are correct...there were lines that stayed in Argyll. By this time...only DNA will show us where...we're to look. I'm hunting the male descendants of a Charles CAMPBELL; Charles CAMPBELL Sr, b. 1730-1740 - d. bfr 1817, GA, MS or LA m. 1st, Elizabeth BELINDEN [BELLENDEN], d. bfr 1800 NC-GA m. 2nd, 1800, Mrs. Richard [Milly Horn, b. NC] Bailey, in Oglethorpe Co. GA [an elderly widow...with grown children] My own line is thru Charles CAMPBELL Senior's son, Levi, and so far...our "only child of Elizabeth", appears to have siblings. Several siblings. So much for "old family traditions". *S* Levi CAMPBELL, b. bfr 1763, Scotland, VA or the Carolina's d. 22 Jan 1817, Vermilion Parish LA m. 1780-1785, Sarah WATKINS, b.1763, Johnston Co. NC d.1822, Vermilion Parish LA 1796, GA records indicate that Charles CAMPBELL "Snr" bought land "at the mouth of Tinkling Springs" Oglethorpe Co. GA from his son, Levi, witnessed by Charles CAMPBELL and Aaron DAVIS. 1800, GA records indicate that Charles CAMPBELL "Snr" sold back to Levi the same "Tinkling Springs" land, with a signed dower release of Snr's then wife, " Milly "X" CAMPBELL ". TO DATE...I've never found this "Tinkling Springs" location. Levi CAMPBELL's siblings apparently include: Charles CAMPBELL \may be the same Charles that d. 1819, Morgan Co.GA \that man left a Will, a widow, and children there \his children included a minor son, Charles. Lorany [Lurany, Laurany, Loraine] CAMPBELL, b. 1770 m. 1st, Benjamin WATKINS, d. bfr 1796 \one son, Laban WATKINS m. 2nd, Sherwood DAVIS, b. NC \more children Levi CAMPBELL's siblings may also include: Kiziah [Kesiah] CAMPBELL, b. 1774-1776 - d. bfr 1809 m. Moses WATKINS [widower, with 3-4 children, later re-married] Levi's wife...Sarah WATKINS...is a proven sibling of both Moses and Benjamin WATKINS, and all were children of Reace WATKINS Sr. The PA > VA > NC > GA WATKINS Family...is well documented.*S* Sherwood DAVIS was a brother of the 1796 witness, Aaron DAVIS. As early as 1785, Levi & Sarah may have arrived in the part of Wilkes Co. GA, that would later become Oglethorpe Co. GA, and most [if not all] of their six children were born in that same part of GA. Their youngest was born in 1805. A possible......MORGAN CO., GA connection???? We have a possible trail for the brother, Charles, who witnessed the land deed of 1796. Our hypothesis is that the Charles who d. 1819 in Morgan Co. GA ...may be our Levi CAMPBELL's brother. AGAIN...Levi is a proven son, and the Charles in Morgan Co. GA is a possible son of this Charles-Elizabeth CAMPBELL: Charles CAMPBELL, b. 1730-1740 - d. bfr 1817 m. 1st, Elizabeth BELINDEN [BELLENDEN], d. bfr 1800 m. 2nd, 1800, Mrs. Richard [Milly Horn] Bailey, in GA [an elderly widow...with grown children] BOTH Levi and his brother Charles were known to have actively participated in the 1807 Land Lottery in Morgan Co. GA. BOTH had lived in Morgan Co. GA ...between 1807 and 1809. So the Charles CAMPBELL that resided, and then died there, is a very strong contender. This last is where the DNA is absolutely crucial and we NEED ...to find descendants of Charles CAMPBELL [d.1819]...so that we may resolve this puzzle of a possible sibling connection. 1809, Levi CAMPBELL, reportedly with Nathaniel MOSS, made an exploratory trip to LA...in consideration for moving from GA. 1810, Levi and Sarah CAMPBELL migrated…with their brood and arrived in the areas of Lafayette and Vermilion Parishes LA. Levi CAMPBELL and family, traveled with and then arrived in LA with the very large...Nathaniel MOSS-Joanna JOHNSON family, who were also...1785-1810 residents of the Wilkes Co. GA area. There appears to have been a short layover in Wilkinson Co. MS ...as a couple of Nathaniel MOSS's eldest stayed on there: George MOSS [Sr] [m. Lucretia GLASS, b. Oglethorpe Co. GA] Mary "Polly" MOSS [m. Reuben BOOTH, b. Oglethorpe Co. GA] To date...we've not found either Levi CAMPBELL or Nathaniel MOSS on either of the 1810 GA or LA Census records. They are both on the 1809 GA and on the 1811 LA. Either, or both, may eventually be found on a MS Census for 1810, but we're all still digging. Levi CAMPBELL settled in the areas surrounding Abbeville LA in Vermilion Parish. Reports are that many lines are still there. I am delighted to announce that we have located... one male descendant of Levi's eldest son, Philander, and that we are now awaiting the results of his 67 point DNA test. *S* IF... you wish to follow the project as it progresses...that kit number is 72715 and the lab is http:/www.familytreedna.com. There is another kit...that we're awaiting processing on. That is of a Benejah CAMPBELL descendant. Kit # 69945 In order to best define CAMPBELL families, and specifically my line's haplogroup, we're in need of more CAMPBELL participants ...whether they are our kin...or not. This is why I am again taking the time....to post today and including our line's proven areas of residences in GA. These are the four descendants of Levi and Sarah’s, who married in Louisiana, and the specific lines that I am tracking: Philander, [ .................processed kit # 72715 ] Benejah, [ .....pending processing of kit # 69945 ] Allen "Buck" CAMPBELL Levi Hampton "Hamp" CAMPBELL Our goal is to find, and test, one male from each of these four male lines... to identify our family haplogroup. Of course...we'd like to find more cousins... male and female, but the above four are the specific Surname DNA platform that we've started with. *S* IF...you are a MALE CAMPBELL descendant, or know of one anywhere, please take the time to contact the CAMPBELL DNA Project Coordinor, Kevin CAMPBELL, < kevincamp@aol.com >. Or you can go do http://www.familytreedna.com ...to order a kit. Search: CAMPBELL A long list will pop up, but only one on the list is spefically ...CAMPBELL. UNFORTUNATLEY...this project is for MALE CAMPBELL's ONLY. The "YY" chromosome is only passed from father to son. As for the Charles CAMPBELL "Snr" Family Project...I'm working with a group of researching cousins...and we'd like to know who would be interested in assisting in sharing family information and traditions...as well as possibly the sorting via DNA. *S* There were also two daughters included in Levi's family and the birth order is: 4. Elizabeth “Betsey” CAMPBELL m. Shadrach PORTER 5. Martha “Patsy” CAMPBELL m. Samuel Russell RICE I am a descendant of Martha “Patsy” CAMPBELL. *S* UNFORTUNATELY...being a daughter, of a long line of daughters tracing back to CAMPBELL, I can't participate in the project. Nor can any of my brothers. Our YY DNA isn't CAMPBELL. :o( There were also daughters from the Levi and Sarah's four sons. We are actively hunting for these lines, and sharing our history with these lines too. *S* Our other main goal, equal to the attempt at DNA identification, is to locate all of our lines and see if we can't resolve some very long standing puzzles. Some of these puzzles are new to us ..as every line has a part of our story that they've passed along.*S* One very big puzzle. There was also a...James CAMPBELL m. Unity WEST...who arrived in Vermilion Parish a couple of years ahead of my Levi CAMPBELL m. Sarah WATKINS line. James CAMPBELL is reported as b. IL - d. LA, the son of a John CAMPBELL...who was reportedly an immigrant from Scotland, and James also known to have named one of his sons, Levi. In the early 1800s, "Levi" was not known for being a common name for CAMPBELL. This makes us all wonder ....if these CAMPBELL lines are kin. ?? Maybe John and Charles Sr were brothers??*S* IF...anyone recognizes...any part of the above...or thinks that they may descend from any part of the above information, please consider contacting me. We cousins are looking to regain contact and...not just for this DNA Project. *S* Wishing all a warm and family filled Thanksgiving 2006, Lisa Grimes ...a Levi CAMPBELL-Sarah WATKINS daughter's descendant: ---------- Martha "Patsy CAMPBELL m. 1819 LA, Samuel Russell RICE .Martha Orr RICE m. LA, Alexander MOSS ..Sophronia Teresia MOSS m. LA or TX, Robert HERRINGTON ...Pauline "Polly" HERRINGTON m. TX, Percie A. ROSSER ....Geraldine Ceba ROSSER m.
