    3. Maybe a clue here? The May Wilson McBee Collection, Vol Two, of Greenwood, MS, compiler, The Natchez Court Records, 1767-1805, Abstracts of Early Records (Ann Arbor, MI: Edwards Brothers, Inc, 1953) The Natchez District consisted of territory that now forms five Mississippi counties, Wilkinson, Adams, Jefferson, Clairborne and Warren, as well as Franklin and part of Amite, which were taken from Adams and Wilkinson in 1809. Being one of a number of Districts in the Province of West Florida, Natchez was ruled by the British from Pensacola, the Capital of the Province of West Florida. In the Province of Louisiana, of which the District became a part when taken by the Spanish in 1779, Natchez was apparently also governed directly from its Capital, New Orleans, for more than a year. Note-The records in 1782 refer to "District of Natchez, in the Province of West Florida" When the United States acquired the Natchez District from Spain, it was agreed that all legal land claims would be recognized. To get this confirmation written proofs of title had to be submitted to the United States Government for consideration. These abstracts of title are recorded in seven large volumes under the name of WRITTEN EVIDENCES and are deposited in the Dept of Interior, Land Division, National Archives, Washington, D.C.
