I think Mattie and Emily A must be the same people--birth year about 1868/1869 In the 1880 Census MATTIE was age 12 (birth year abt. 1868/1869) living in the Moses Cavin household. But in the 1885 Wilkinson Co. Census there is a MARTHA, age 14 (birth year abt. 1871/1872) living in the household of Wiley Shropshire in Perrytown. <<If she was born in 1873 she would have been the child of L.A. and living with them in 1880.>> IF it's right according to Mattie's tombstone she was born Sept. 19, 1872 . Wiley Shropshire married L.A. Robinson (by the way I found out it was MRS.) on April 2, 1873 so Mattie could still have been the daughter of Mary. She wouldn't have been listed on the 1880 Census with Wiley and Labitha A. because she was listed living in the household of Moses Cavin--I guess Mary must have died??. And to complicate things a little further....remember on the settlement of Wiley Shropshire's estate dated Aug. 10, 1887....."L.A. Shropshire appointed adminstrator of estate as his widow and heir at law and his children: MARTHA (Shropshire) Brown married to J.A (James Arthur) Brown, Tabitha Cobb, wife of John S. Cobb; Fancy Leake wife of J.R. Leake and Nancy E. Carter wife of I.D. Carter. So what is her REAL NAME ?.....Emily A. Martha "Mattie" Shropshire Brown???????? I have been talking to Mattie's great, great grand daughter, Jane Millette. Jane says all she can remember her being called is Mattie. But I will ask Jane were the date came from for the headstone. Your right it could very well be wrong because according to the census it ranges from 1868 to 1872 or either someone wasn't very good with age. These Shropshires are definitely a mystery--and a chore to keep up with. Brenda McCurley White Rep
I am not sure I answered this but I would consider her name to be Martha, nicknamed Mattie, as that is the name she used.
