The 1880 US census (at least a transcription of same) is FREE on the Family History Library website at _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) If a person is age 48 in 1920, it seems he/she should appear as a child in the 1880 US census, assuming that child was born in 1872 or thereabouts. The trick is--is the name spelled right? The census-taker wrote it wrong lots of time, and then the indexer couldn't read the writing, at times. Be creative in your misspelling!! The URL is _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) Look on the right side of the screen and find the word Census There is a drop-down menu--choose the US census The website is relatively friendly. Those are members of a public library which subscribes to HeritageQuest [an online genealogical database] should be able to get actual images [in most cases, not always] of various US censuses. The pity is the 1850 census is not fully indexed, and one has to browse various counties. Might as well read the microfilm. If your library does not have HeritageQuest on its computers, ask the public librarian [the reference person with a degree in Library Science] to help you find a nearby county which DOES have such a subscription. Some persons on rootsweb sites have told me that for a fee of, say $30, they have been able to get a library card from a nearby county. Also, check with your State Librarian. (Your State does have a State library, I hope.) E.W.Wallace ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
