    1. [MSWILKIN] McElwee Family of Later Date
    2. Someone recently posted a remark about a McElwee family. I have gathered a few notes on a later McElwee family, which may provide some clues for a diligent researcher, who picks up on small (this may be useful later) clues. This McElwee male married the daughter of a former Wilkinson Co., MS resident. There may be a connection to the unknown McElwee family Rev Feb 2006 WESLEY MCELWEE Husband of Mary Ann Keller, daughter of George W. Keller [deceased, married to Eleanor Waddell] of Wilkinson Co., MS and granddaughter of early settler George Keller, formerly of Sumter Co., SC and later of Wilkinson Co., MS. McElwee and his wife, the former Mary Jane Keller, daughter of G. W. Keller and Eleanor Waddell, are found in the 1860 census of Amite Co., MS. Dwelling 424, Family 424 [handwritten page 80] Wesley G. McElwee, age 42?, planter, $8,000 R.E., 30,000 personal property, b. LA Mary Jane, age 30, F, b Miss Catherine, age 12, F, b. Miss attended school within year McKliff, age 9, M, ditto Robin, age 4 or 6?, M ditto John, age 5, M Albert, age 15, M, b. Miss Margaret, age 2, F, b. Miss ....? Rogers, 21, M overseer, b. SC Wesley may have been the son of James McElwee, whose name appears in the 1830 census of East Feliciana Par., LA, the same parish where the bride's stepfather had lived--James McDonald [James McDonald was the second husband of Eleanor Waddell]. This is the enumeration of West Feliciana Parish, 1850 census, listing Wesley E. McElwee and family: Dwelling 309, family 314 Wesley E. McElwee, 28, W, Planter, 1400-b. Miss Mary [A or J]. McElwee, 20, F, Miss Catherine E. McElwee, 3, F, b. LA Robert W. McElwee, 3/12?, b. LA Cornelia McDonald, 14, F, b. MS We believe Cornelia McDonald is either a step-sister or a half-sister of Mary A. (Keller) McElwee. Her widowed mother, the former Eleanor Waddell who married 1) George W. Keller, later married 2) James McDonald of Feliciana Parish, LA. A couple of male white McElwees are in the 1870 census index for Amite Co. We have to remember this was after the Civil War. Persons may have died, or else moved elsewhere. A published census index for 1870 Mississippi census lists one W. G. McElwee, age 52, male, white, b. LA in Amite Co., MS. Is this the same person? M McElwee - 48 - m - w - b. MS - Liberty PO - Reel 721 pg. 485 T. A. McElwee - 16 - m - w - b MS - Liberty PO - reel 721 pg. 476 W. G. McElwee - 52 - m - w - b. LA - Liberty PO reel 721 pg. 474 There is a child McElwee, Robert, age 7, b. KY. p. 487 In Copiah Co., MS: John McElwee - 60 - m - w - b. Ms - Hazlehurst PO reel 727 - pg 293 In Marshall co., there is an adult male S. J. McElwee, age 51, b. TN Comment: I do not study the McElwee family, but as deaths of males, in particular, were rather frequent in this area of Wilkinson Co.-the Feliciana Parishes, I try to study some of the children and pick up more clues about some of their ancestors--particularly their widowed grandmothers, whose records are few and far between. Some genealogists call this studying clusters of families. Probate and guardianship records have been very helpful.
