Hi all, I am on a number of the other Mississippi lists - but recently came into possession of one of the Woodville Republican books - which "sort of" solved a mystery or two - but created many more! (I am in Wyoming - so can't come there and do research!) First - found this - which finally gave a wife's first name for Zacheus Davis: The Woodville Republican Mississippi's Oldest Existing Newspaper Volume 1: December 18, 1823 - December 17, 1839 compiled by O'Levia Neil Wilson Wiese September 11, 1826 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ SARAH DAVIS, adm'x., of ZACHEUS DAVIS's estate ____________________________________________________ Then a it later this - which tells me that Sarah Davis - is actually Sarah Edwards: The Woodville Republican Mississippi's Oldest Existing Newspaper Volume 1: December 18, 1823 - December 17, 1839 compiled by O'Levia Neil Wilson Wiese June 2, 1827 ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Died June 1, Miss JEMIMA EDWARDS, and on the 4th, her sister, Mrs. SARAH DAVIS, having devised effects to the amount of more than a thousand dollars to the children of her sister, ELIZABETH DUNN, living somewhere in the state of Mississippi. (This notice was requested by THOMAS EDWARDS of Columbia City, Ga., April 10, 1827) (now the date of the "request" by Thomas Edwards seems to be "off" - I can interprit it two ways - he request a copy - but how could he BEFORE they died - or requested they run this - but again - how could he BEFORE they died?????) Sarah Edwards family was easy to find - and I suspect the Jesse Edwards in the Wilkinson/Amite area is her brother listed below: Bible of Benjamin & Mary Edwards The Benjamin Edwards Bible is very small, about 3" x 6". It was printed in 1759, in Cambridge, England, by Joseph Bentham at "His Majesty's Special Command". Handwriting used for family data was distinguished, even elegant. Entries were obviously made at time of births, for old fashioned forms of letters were used, as f for the double s, as in Jesse. Only births were recorded. The births of five of the seven children of "Benjamin and Mary his wife" were recorded in the Bible. Micajah Edwards son of Benjamin Edwards an Mary his wife was born October the 8th day 1762. Salle Edwards daughter of Benjamin Edwards an Mary his wife was born May the 12th day 1764. (Sarah) Jesse Edwards son of Benjamin Edwards an Mary his wife was born March the 8th day 1766. Elizabeth Edwards daughter of Benjamin Edwards an Mary his wife was born November the 11th day 1767. Jemima Edwards daughter of Benjamin Edwards an Mary his wife was born January the 21st day 1770. ____________________________________________ What I am wanting to know: Who is the Dunn that Elizabeth Edwards married? I found a listing for a Sylvester Dunn - but other researchers have a different maiden name for her. Sylvester was in Amite. (could the other researchers be wrong - none of them have a family for Elizabeth - so suspect that it may not be rock solid) Who is the Jesse Edwards in Wilkinson and Amite Counties? And after Sarah's death - did he take her kids to raise? (I haven't found Dunn, Davis or Edwards household in 1830 with an increase to account for the Davis orphans) Does anyone connect to Zacheus Davis and Sarah Edwards - and who is Zacheus' father?????? Everything is pointing to Zacheus being born in Georgie - like where the Edwards' came from - but not finding any bunch in Georgia that claim him. The descendants have first names of Jenkins, Jeremiah, Jesse, Champion, Gilbert & Elbert - which appear in a line in Georgia - but can't find any ties to them - and suspect that he may tie some other Davis in the Wilkinson area. Here's what I do know about Zacheus Davis. b. probably between 1760-1794 and probably in Georgia. Probate info from Louisiana: Probate #25, Book A-2, Page 21 dated March 12, 1847--Zachius Davis's sons, John M., Jesse E. and Jeremiah S. are selling two slaves which they had inherited from the estate of their father late of Pike County, State of Mississippi; deceased to Jenkin E. Davis a resident of St. Tammany Parish, LA. It is dated February 15, 1847. It states that John M. Davis is from Washington Parish and Jesse E. and Jeremiah S. Davis are from St. Tammany Parish. Probate #101, Book A-2, Page 217 dated June 27, 1848--Jenkins Edward Davis, unmarried, is selling a slave to Jeremiah Sampson Davis. Jenkins Edward Davis states that it is the same slave which he had inherited from his father, Zaccheus Davis's estate. It is the same slave which his brothers John M., Jesse E. and Jeremiah S. had sold to him in 1847. ______________________________________________ Shown on the 1820 Pike County Mississippi Census Zach Davis Free white males under 10 1 (Jenkins) Free white males 26-45 1 (Zaccheus) Free white females 17- 26 1 [Sarah] # of persons engaged in agriculture 1 ____________________________ >From "Source Records from Pike County, MS 1798-1910" 13 Regiment (Nixon's ) of MS Militia: DAVIS, Zacheus 1820 Census of MS Zac Davis: 100010 - 00100-1-0 [1 male 0-10 & 1 male 26-40 - 1 female 16-26; 1 engaged in agriculture] 1825 Tax List Pike Count, MS Zacheus Davis; 160 [acres] Bo. So - these children were SMALL when Zacheus dies in 1827 and his mother a year later in 1828. So who raised the children???? The ones we know are: Jenkins Edward Davis Jesse E. Davis Jeremiah Sampson Davis John Martin Davis Jenkins, Jesse and John all were in Louisiana by the mid 1840's - and all died there. Jeremiah has "disappeared" - so can't tell you anything about hi m. They were near other Davis' in Louisiana - in St. Tammany Parish - but can't find any connection with them either. Does anyone know how far back the probate records go in Wilkinson County? (I know that Pike burned - so had given up hope - til the info in the Woodville Republican turned up) Does anyone on here - have a connection to Davis, Dunn or Edwards?
