    3. Shirley, the John D. Ashley who married Sarah Jane Adams was John Duncan Ashley. He was the son of Thomas Ashley and Sarah 'Sally' Day. Thomas was the son of the John Duncan Ashley who married Elizabeth who we THINK is the grand daughter of George Sanders and Agnes Kelly. Sarah Day was the daughter of Jonathan Day and his first wife, a Miss Trice. We know her parents but not her first name, and believe me, I have spent years reading Hancock county, GA. records trying to get a clue to her name. This John D. Ashley was the only one I know with the middle name of Duncan. The naming system back then seem to be using the first name of a parent and a completely different middle name. If I ever find a record that shows the older John D. had Duncan for a middle name I will send it out at once. I have seen records with people guessing several middle name for him, including Drake, but have as yet to find any record for him other than John D. Ashley in the 1820, 1830 census and his obit. I have found no deeds or probate records, although his sons receive land grants in Wilkinson Co. MS. and we know John D. Ashley died in Wilkinson Co., MS in 1830. I also heard stories that this John D. Ashley helped build the old Hopewell Church in Wilkinson Co. Wife's had a 'dower right' to the land and was required to sign when the land was sold. This John D. Ashley was the only one I know with the middle name of Duncan. The cemetery called Ashley 5 in the Civil Club Cemetery book was the cemetery for the old Hopewell church. I have interviewed several of the older relatives in the county and been told so many little tidbits that I would like to share. One thing I am think of is the name of some of the older cemeteries. C. L. Johnson said the cemetery on Turkey Creek, Ashley 2 in the Cemetery Book, was called the Old Burned Church cemetery. It was also called the Columbus Phipps cemetery as Mr. Phipps and his wife lived there. This cemetery was located near the home of my gg grandfather, Willis Ashley, and later gave in the possession of Louisa Perry Ashley, grand daughter of Willis. She married first, Columbus Phipps and second, Cleveland Ashley. After the church burned a new church was built down the road and new headstones have been erected there for Seth Edward Ashley and his Rhoda wife, Sturdivant . This cemetery is called Old Perrytown Church in the cemetery book. 3. Sorry if my message was confusing. Sarah Jane Adams was the wife of John Duncan Ashley. I did have this bit in the middle of the explanation ************************* This cemetery was located near the home of my gg grandfather, Willis Ashley, and later gave in the possession of Louisa Perry Ashley, grand daughter of Willis. She married first, Columbus Phipps and second, Cleveland Ashley ****************************** I understand Columbus was much older than Louisa. She was his second wife. I know Frank Phipp's father was Richard Phipps, Do you know Richard's parents? 3. Hi Virgina, I noticed that you had difference names of the cemeteries. I sure would like to get a list of them. I have a site for the cemeteries in Wilkinson Co. and would like to add the differecne names under the name they are known by now. The site is http://www.foswms.com/wilkinson/cemeteries.html in case someone is interested. It has the gps readings and photos of the headstones. Thanks W. 3. First let me say what a really great thing this page is for all of us. My thanks to all concerned. The reason I sometimes use other name than the ones in the cemetery book because it is part of the local history and I think it is interesting, maybe someone else will, too. . If some of you who live in the area, or are familiar with the area, find something you want to correct, feel free. I am only passing on what I was told. All I know about the places over there I heard from C. L. Johnson, John Robert Murray, Ada Ashley Smith, and my Uncles Willis M. Ashley, Prim B. Ashley, and Talmedage P. Ashley, all now deceased. I did not grow up in Wilkinson county and went there for the first time in the mid 1980s. My Uncle Willis Ashley took me to what is referred to as Ashley 1 and Ashley 2 cemeteries. and introduced me to John Robert Murray, Aunt Emma, Louisa Perry, and others. Ashley 1, where George Neal Ashley, Rebecca Jane Cavin Ashley and Charles Ashley are buried, was originally a large cemetery on property owned by George Perry. Jr. [according to my Uncle Willis Ashley] I call it the George Perry cemetery but I can't remember if others did. I think they called it the Ashley cemetery because the property was in the Ashley family for years. My Uncle Willis said there was really two cemeteries there. The white cemetery was near the road with the black cemetery to the back. The property was once later owned by George Neal Ashley. His second wife, my grand mother's sister, Almeta Adrisha Gober, was buried there and my grandmother's baby was buried there, along with members of the George Perry family. Most of this graveyard was plowed up and the land is now used for crops. The 3 Ashley graves were probably left because Neal Ashley enclosed them and built a shed over the top. One of my great aunt Almeta's descendants has a picture of her grave taken in the 1950s. The Cemetery was plowed up sometime after. This information on the original cemetery was told to me by several people, including my uncle Willis Ashley, cousin John Robert Murray, and others. C. L. Johnson told me George Perry Jr was buried just behind the corner of Neal's shed. In describing the location, he said when it rained the water would drip off the back corner of the shed right on George Perry's grave. C. L. and his cousin, Dr. Elwyn Cavin erected a marker for George Perry so the grave location would not be lost. I have not been back and do not know what the marker looks like. Someone in the area might get a picture for you. Uncle Willis Ashley and everyone I talked to in the area, said that Ashley two, which is located off Turkey Creek Road, just past where the late Louisa Perry Phipps Ashley lived, was known locally as the old Columbus Phipps graveyard. Louisa [Columbus's second wife] told me she didn't understand why it was called that because the graveyard was there long before Columbus lived there. . C. L. Johnson told me the graveyard was once connected to a church and was used by all religions in the area. After the church burned local residents started calling it 'the old burned church graveyard' until Columbus Phipps moved in the house near by and it became the Columbus Phipps graveyard. Clifford Cavin, the brother of C. L. Johnson's mother, was buried in this cemetery. C. L. said he remembered attending the funeral on the 4th of July. C. L. was born and raised in Wilkinson Co. He lived there 93 years and took a great interest in it's people and their history. When he knew he was dying he had his son call me to come. [I live in Texas]. He gave me the information on the burned church from his death bed. He felt it was important so I am passing it on.. John Robert Murray called Ashley 3 the Old Hi Ashley cemetery. This was the Hiram Flowers Ashley family cemetery. Hiram F. was the son of John Duncan Ashley, and a brother of my great grandfather, Willis M. Ashley. I don't remember what John Robert called Ashley 4 but said it was also the Hi. Ashley family cemetery and was started because one of the family members died at a time when the water was up and they could not get to the old cemetery. Ashley 5 cemetery, according to Ada Ashley Smith, was the Old Saukum Cemetery , she also said it was the cemetery for the original Hopewell church. This was the church the first John D. Ashley was suppose to have helped build. I have a video of the cemetery but don't think I have still pictures. There were only two original headstones, Jane Ashley Day and her grand daughter, but there are headstones that were erected later for members of the Hiram Ashley family and William Warren Ashley family. There was suppose to be a lot of people buried there but without headstones, or with wooden headstones that rotted. Gurvis Ashley and others have been buried there in recent years. It's tucked away in the woods and the last time I wanted to go I couldn't remember how to get there. What you have for Old Perrytown Cemetery was called the Old Perrytown Church Cemetery, according to C. L. Johnson. This was the cemetery for the church that was built after the first church burned. What you have for Perry 3 is not a Perry cemetery at all. It is the cemetery of the Johnson Family. This cemetery is right across the fence from John Perry's grave but it is not part of that cemetery. This is C. L. Johnson's parents, his sister and brother in law. I know it says Perry 3 in the cemetery book but it is separate from the Perry cemetery. However, C. L.'s mother, buried here, was the great grand daughter of George Perry Jr. Perry 1, is probably the last cemetery started for a Perry family. This was the Shad Perry cemetery. Shad was the great grandson of John Perry. Even though the John Perry cemetery was just down the road Shad did not want to be buried there. He wanted to be buried on his own property. When he died his wife [my great aunt Mary Emma Ashley Perry] had him buried between their home and the home of their daughter and son in law, Jeanette and John Robert Murray. While Jeanette and John Robert both talked about the location [they weren't thrilled] I don't think either ever mentioned a name for it. I am not sure what they called Perry 2 [from the cemetery book] That would be the cemetery where Caleb Perry and his family was buried. I have not been to that cemetery. I did meet some of the family members but don't remember them mentioning a name other than Perry cemetery. What the cemetery book calls Perrytown Cemetery and Perry 3 is what John Robert Murray , called the old Perry cemetery. I called it the John Perry cemetery as he was the first person, with a headstone, buried here. Most of the people in the cemetery are his descendants, or connected to his descendants. You do not have this cemetery on your webpage. I am including the list of names I copied from this cemetery some years back, along with notes I made at the time. I call this the John Perry cemetery, because he was the original owner, and the first person, with a headstone, buried there. The cemetery is called Perrytown and old Perry town in the Wilkinson co. Cemetery book. Sec 17, T4N R1W I first copied this cemetery in 1986 and returned several times to recheck my notes and check for recent burials. The last time I visited was the fall of 1997. This graveyard is surrounded by trees and very pleasant to walk through. It is now posted so you'll need permission to enter. John A.
