1. [MSWILKIN] Trying to Find Ancestors in Wilkinson Co., MS
    2. Dear James R. Hills, Jr. Since you live in Houston, it is more than likely you can get a library card from the Houston Public Library system I understand the Clayton Library on Caroline Street probably has online images of certain genealogical databases, such as HeritageQuest and perhaps Ancestry.com In some libraries, you cannot access Ancestry.com from a remote computer, but have to use it in the library. Your password for HeritageQuest is the number on your library card, which we hope is up-to-date. In most cases, you can access HeritageQuest on a remote computer. The main genealogical library in Houston is the Clayton Library. Here is the website which I accessed. _www.hpl.lib.tx.us/clayton_ (http://www.hpl.lib.tx.us/clayton) Find a search blank. I searched the term HeritageQuest. It was No. 23 on the list. I had overlooked the fact that HeritageQuest also published books and journals, and that is the reason the electronic database is No. 23 on the list. Suggestion: Get some dates for your relatives (somebody in the family must know some approximate dates) and do some census searches online--if that works for you. Your query omitted dates, which are most important, since Mississippi was part of the Louisiana Purchase taking place in the early 1800s. Also, since Mississippi fell under the Federal Land System, it is conceivable your relatives may have purchased land from the Federal government--or their ancestors did. I have a number of common named ancestors who lived in or around Wilkinson Co. (some just below--in what is now East Feliciana Parish), and from time to time I have found their names on this URL. But watch the dates--don't assume every Hills on the list may be your relatives--but the farther back in time you go, the more probable you have a good clue. This is the website for the General Land Office of the Bureau of Land Management. Look for the tab entitled Land Patents near the top of the opening screen. Then enter the surname and the word Mississippi--or maybe Louisiana. _http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/_ (http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/) I am fairly certain there are a good many books at Clayton Library about Wilkinson Co., including several which are newspaper excerpts from Woodville Republican. I found some good marriage and death dates in Volume 1 of that series. Also, if you have not seen this website, try it!!! _www.rootsweb.com/~mswilkin/_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~mswilkin/) Good luck!! Oh, yes, take a look at this website: _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) Look for the link to the catalog and do a PLACE search for Wilkinson Co. [do not type the word county, however] E.W.Wallace

**************************************
AOL now offers free email to everyone.
