1. [MSWILKIN] Re: MSWILKIN-D Digest V03 #38
2. In case researchers are near an LDS family history center, there are 29 reels of film held by the Family History Library of marriages in Wilkinson Co., MS--including some black marriages--quite a few films of those. The FHL catalog is online at www.familysearch.org The link to the catalog is on the lower right. Type in locality search - Wilkinson and then Mississippi (lower case OK) Then go all the way to the bottom of the topics to Vital Records. Click on that. You cannot borrow the books, unless they have been filmed. Look for a tab at the top right which says View Film Notes (or some such wording). You may borrow, for a small fee for a short time, most of the films held by the Family History Library. In case there is no LDS center near you, ask your public library whether they have an agreement with FHL in Salt Lake City. Some e-mail correspondents tell me that their local libraries have such an agreement. I have not confirmed that statement. But, if you don't ask, you will never know! E.W.Wallace While you are on the website, try the 1880 census which is online. The search engine doesn't always work well--the census-taker misspelled names, surname and given name, and then the transcribers also made some bad boo-boos! Try to outsmart it by misspelling names or giving an unusual first name and the county! EWW
