The census-taker as well as the transcribers of the index were careless in their spelling, not only of forenames but also of surnames. Do not give the search engine too much information, or it will get thoroughly confused. You can do this: use the first three letters of the surname and then add an asterisk (a wild card) And misspell the first three letters. Change the vowel if necessary, and sometimes P and B are mixed up. If you give the search engine too much information, it gets stubborn. Also, check out the neighbors. Some people tell me they search the community itself rather than a particular family. I must try that.
