I'm leaning against 'any' SAUNDERS as my >ancestors. well don't lean too hard, I often find my Anders ancestors listed as Andrews. Sanders and Saunders may be interchangeable. Also, sometimes one branch of a family will spell their name one way and another branch of the same family chooses a different spelling, one example would be McCurley and McCearley. Also, answering you other e-mail: Do you know for a fact that POKE was your ancestors official name, or was it the name he was known by. There is a difference. Many people gave their children nicknames that had nothing to do with their real name. Makes research very hard until you know the real given name. I did not find a Poke as a Sanders or Saunders in the marriage records or the cemetery record book. There are no birth records for the mid 1850s. Births were not required to be recorded in MS until 1912. Some records of the Woodville Republican where copied by Mrs. Weise and I sent you what I found there. There may be more as those I copied years ago when trying to find the Saunders who are descended from Agnes Ashley. I have the first 5 volumes of Mrs. Weise's book on CD but it is indexed by surname only and it takes hours to go though and check each mention of a name I bought my copy from www.heritagebooks.com. It was $27.50 plus $5.00 shipping. A real bargain. The early editions of the paper are on microfilm but the print is small, smeared and difficult to read. I read one film and gave up. DO NOT contact the newspaper with request for look ups. Mr. Lewis, the editor, told me they got many request but they do not have the time or man power to do look ups. From the way he talked, I don't think they have back issues on hand. He referred me to the ones on microfilm and to Mrs. Weise's books. FHC is short for Family History Center. They are run by the Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and are branches of the main Family History Library in Salt Lake City. There are millions of microfilm and most can be rented through FHCs. Just about everything in the Wilkinson Co. Chancery Clerks office has been microfilmed down to 1920. All the marriage records are on microfilm and some of the early civil court records. All the census records are on CD's and can be purchased through www.heritagequest.com They are much easier to read than microfilm as the CD image can be enlarged as big as you like. The 1850 and 1860 census have been copied and can be found at http://www.us-census.org/states/mississippi/w-ms.htm#Wilkinson or http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~thall/censuses.html Do you know the names of Poke's children, or even one child, and about when he/she was born? That would be a big help. It is much easier to start with what you know and work up. Virginia

    1. 11/25/03 Re: [MSWILKIN] SANDERS FAMILY FROM WOODSVILLE, MS.
    2. Ms. Ewing, Thank you. I checked the SAUNDERS line and found no POKE. I went to a family gathering last night and POKE SANDERS (from Woodville, MS) was listed on the death certificate for his (POKE) son HORACE SR. (I'll have to get the date on the death certificate when my father finds it). Therefore, in answer to your question, yes POKE SANDERS is the real name not a nickname. The following is what I know for sure; POKE had a son Horace Sr. (born unknown date in middle 1800's, I would assume) who later migrated to Baton Rouge, LA.. Horace Sr. married a Lurtie (last name unknown in San Francisville, LA some time in the late or middle 1800's) Horace Sr. was also worked a plantation overseer at sometime (probably before marrying Lurtie) at a unknown plantation in San Fancisville, LA. Horace Sr. later worked for Esso Standard Oil Co. (later Standard Oil) in Baton Rouge, LA. HORACE SR. died while working for Esso Standard Oil Co. (unknown date) and his obituary was in the Esso Oil Co. plant paper (had cousin to check Standard Oil archives for plant paper and HORACE SR. but no archives, all records destroyed when became Standard Oil Co.). Also, in the records you sent me Sunday, I saw a JOSEPH SANDERS, who owed land with a WILLIAM SWAYZE on March 21,1835 in WILKERSON COUNTY (from the Republican paper). There was also, a THOMAS Y. SANDERS on June 18, 1842 who had an administrator of his (THOMAS Y. SANDERS) estate sell land to the heir (NATHAN SWAYZE) of WILLIAM SWAYZE (mentioned in above sentence). Also, from the Republican newspaper. Is it possible for you to find out if either JOSEPH SANDERS & THOMAS Y. SANDERS has a son POKE? I've checked the SAUNDERS and JESSIE SANDERS line (Also, mentioned in the Republican records) and there was 'no' POKE found. Ms. Ewing, I feel confident we will resolve this inquiry! THANKS, AGAIN!
