You might try starting here, a good web site - http://www.spanamwar.com/1stmississippiroster.htm Also: http://www.rootsweb.com/~msfrankl/spamwar.htm OR do a google.com search, but doesn't look like there is a lot on line for MS yet... Someone is asking about records of veterans of Spanish American war. I suggest a couple of resources, which may not give any genealogical info, but.... to know what you are looking for, you have to know whether it will be useful to you. 1. Ask your librarian to help you find some information on the Spanish American War. I understand that it, the War, was incited by the publications of William Randolph Hearst, but what do I know? A children's encyclopedia may help you understand. Theodore Roosevelt was instrumental in creating *the Rough Riders*. Many men died of disease in Cuba, I understand, including one of my great-uncles. At least, he never came home from that War. (So look up Theodore Roosevelt and Rough Riders also. I suspect the Rough Riders because one of the places where he recruited was San Antonio, Texas, and my great-uncle and other family members lived not too far distant. He was young, and no doubt daring, as was his older brother. ) 2. The Family History Library in Salt Lake City has a very useful Research Outline [may have changed its name] It is called something like *U.S. Military Records." It breaks down each war in which Americans fought (I cannot remember whether this includes colonial wars such as the French & Indian War ca 1755-?) Then there are some guidelines as to what records would be most useful to one. For any researcher who had ancestors [or relatives] fighting in one of these wars, this outline would be very helpful. I found the following information by going to _www.familysearch.org_ (http://www.familysearch.org) I looked for the word Guide. Since I know the research outline I am looking for is called something like United States Military Records, I search by Title (see left side of screen when you get to the appropriate screen) I then click on U on the alphabet which is presented. Under United States, I found the info regarding the U.S. Military records. The screen presents a number of wars. Finding the Spanish American War, I find this catalog entry (I have deleted MUCH as sometimes cutting and pasting messes up the formatting). If you decide to print out the WHOLE thing, be sure you have PLENTY of paper in your printer, as it is thick. U.S. Military Records Research Outline SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR, 1898 ____________________________________ The war between the United States and Spain was largely fought in Cuba and the Philippines. The conflict lasted from April to August 1898. As a result, the United States acquired Puerto Rico and Guam and bought the Philippines. Cuba became independent. The war was fought by U.S. regular forces and state volunteers. About 250,000 enlisted men and 11,000 officers served in this conflict. Most volunteers came from the states of New York, Pennsylvania, Illinois, and Ohio. Records for this war are listed in the Locality search of the Family History Library Catalog under: UNITED STATES - MILITARY RECORDS - WAR OF 1898 Service Records Below is an index to service records: _General Index to Compiled Service Records of Volunteer Soldiers Who Served during the War with Spain_ (http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/Rg/catalog/specific.asp?Locality=undefined&Id=&Event=&Date=undefined&DateId=&ActiveTab=&F irstEntry=&StrategyId=&GuidedPathId=&ArchiveId=&CombinedSubject=undefined&Work ingId=&FocusId=&FocusLocality=undefined&WorkingTab=&FocusTab=&SubjectBar=&MaxT abs=&AlphaCode=&Subject=undefined&BlueBar=&Guide=undefined&GuideTab=&GuideId=& Section=&TitleSql=%20WHERE%20(((t.titleno%20=%20343036))) . National Archives Microfilm Publication M871. (FHL films 1002433–558; computer number 288680.) Also, I just now did a google.com search for spanish american war. Amazingly, there is quite a bit of material. For Wilkinson Co., MS, is there an issue or two of the Woodville Republican which mentions persons involved in this war. I have interest in only those issues prior to 1850, so have done no research in later issues? E.W.Wallace

Thanks Dave. I'm going to borrow a buddies Super Cub next week and take flight over the property. I found another new map source here on the computer. It too confirms I was heading in the right direction, I just wish I could remember how I found this in the first place 15 years ago, Not sure if it was from an overflight or what. Here's another map source you might like: http://terraserver-usa.com/image.aspx?T=2&S=11&Z=15&X=1662&Y=8673&W=2 not sure why it shows distance from Houston Tx. I'm just across the River in Concordia Parish. Hi Dave Yes Geter Cemetery has to be the one I am speaking of. Do you know it? I pulled it up on the map from the Lat/Long you gave me and it went right to the spot I tried to get to, but since it was hunting season, and I was sure that was someone's hunting lease, plus the mud I didn't venture much pass the little black church an it's cemetery down Oaklane. those Enlow Headstones would have had to be just outside the broken down fence on the west side. Can you tell me anything else about the cemetery? Who I might have to talk to to get permission to view it? I don't know how I found it the first time I visited the location. My Great Grand Father,(Benjamin Franklin Enlow) and Great Grand Mother died from yellow fever back in 1876, leaving a 5 year old son. I'm sure the only markers they must have had were wooden. Their home should have been somewhere near that area. I would assume Jessie Enlow Jr br. 1807(Great Great Grandfather) would have had a headstone though since he had 9 kids. Hi Dave. I ordered the map from the Wilkinson County Courthouse back 15 years or so ago when I wanted to start looking for the Enlow's/Dawson's My Grandfather lost his parents at age 5 (1876 yellow fever)and was raised by the Dawsons, so he knew little Enlow history. I'll check the Miss Dept of Transportation site out see what their map has to offer. My map doesn't show but the one cemetery on Possum Corner Road, and that at the Black Church about 1/2 mile up the road. I have the Delorme USA Maps program it doesn't have the cemeteries, but works well when flying. I can get the Lat/Long for the area I am refering to if you would like that. Maybe I'll order the Delorme Street Atlas. Bet that's it. is it at the East end of Possum Corner Road? or pass the Black Church? Hopefully I'll beable to find that one. Somehow I drove right up to one on Possum Corner road years ago, but don't know how I found it since it wasn't on my Wilkinson County map like all the other cemeteries were. I hope you can give more directions, after hunting season, I'll venture back over and try to find it again. Hi Brenda You are right I am speaking for the Possum Corner road. The Black Church is only about 1/2 mile down the Possum Corner road. I am thinking since I have it drawn in on my Wilkinson County map the lane I was speaking about was about 1/4 mile or less down the Possum Corner road., right at a section line depicted on the map. I have this drawn in on my County Map, with the note "This is It" circled at the top of my map. With hunting season in full swing I didn't check the area any except from the Possum Corner Road. Also There is a small lane behind the black Church, on old maps it does show it coming back into the main road North of Ireland. It's been 15 years or more since I was there. What I do remember were the Enlow names on headstones outside the fence on the West side. I'm hoping I am not confused with the headstones in the Enlow/Tyler Cemetery on Wildwood Lane below the Mars Hill Church. Maybe those were outside the fence, but now someone has cleaned that section of the Enlow/Tyler Cemetery up as they did the back of the Mars Hill Cemetery. But I do remember all the vines, trees and brush I had to push my way through behind the fence to reach these graves. I would love checking the area I am discribing, but it is on private property. At the time 15 years ago I did exploer all the small cemeteries between Iereland, and Crosby on the roads you spoke of. I'm interested in finding Jessie Enlow Sr and Jr. and or Benjamin Franklin Enlow d.1876/wife Nancy Sarah Ann Enlow d. 1876, both from yellow fever. and also Stephen McCormick Dawson/Sarah Ann Enlow Dawson's graves. Thanks Dave I don't have my Wilkinson County map with me today. But tonight I will study that. the only other Enlow Cemetery I know about is where Hiram Enlow and his family are buried down at Wilkinson North of the Buffalo river. Going down Perrytown Road...heading from Crosby to Dolorosa....you will pass roads on the left like Crooked Creek Road, Turkey Creek Road and then a very small area called Ireland. A few miles past Ireland you will pass a road I have heard called Possum Corner Road--not Possum Point--that is located on the right hand side of the road. After Possum Corner/Point Road you will pass Mars Hill Cemetery on the right and about 300 ft. later you will pass Enlow/Tyler Cemetery (Wildwood Road) on the right. But you are saying there is a cemetery on Possum Point (Corner) Road...am I wrong??? I know there is a small black church about 2 miles--give or take-- down Possum Corner/Point Road on the right...with several unmarked graves that I am still trying to find out more about. ..but you are saying there is another cemetery on that road BEFORE you get to the church. It's been about 2 years since I was down the road, but you are right, just about everything down the road has become farming land or a cow pasture now. BUT WOULD ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO KNOW THE LOCATION OF THIS CEMETERY you are talking about!!! To your knowledge....can you recall any of the surnames you remember from this cemetery??? Promise you...if you/I can locate the cemetery...I will take pictures of the cemetery and will be more than happy to send them to you. Brenda McCurley White

Just North of Mars Hill Church, Years ago I turned on Possum Point road, about 100 yds down it I turned back North on a lane. There I found a small cemetery with more Enlows, Their headstones were outside the fence with large trees grown around them( I think the West side ). Last week I couldn't find the lane, and it appears the area is now a large cow pasture. This should be off Possum Point road before reaching the small Black church and cemetery. Not to confuse with Enlow/Tyler(WildWood Lane), and or the Mars Hill Cemetery. Has anyone else viewed this location? Or have I gotten marked my County map wrong? Don Enlow fly4cc@aol.com
My grandfather went somewhere to join (enlist?) the Spanish American War effort. He said the War ended before he actually was able to join. I don't know if he ever submitted registration papers. Does anyone know whether there would be records of would-be enlisted men? Was this during the time when all men of a certain age had to submit military registration information? If so, how could I locate these records? Thanks to anyone with information or advice. I am trying to gather any and all information about them, and anyone who is interested in helping please feel free to contact me at Johnnyreb6@aol.com. I am currently gathering the rosters of all the Southern Volunteers who served in the Spanish American War, and as you can imagine it's pretty difficult trying to locate all these men by ones self, so I'm looking for any help that I can get. I'm looking for any artifacts, grave locations, personal documents, etc... regarding the Veterans of 1898' to 1902' from Mississippi, or any other State for that matter. This is part of a larger effort by myself and the members of the Micah John Jenkins Camp No. 164, Sons of Spanish American War Veterans, to try and make sure that the Veterans of the Spanish American War, Philippine Insurrection, and China Relief Expedition, are remembered. If anyone is interested in more information about the S.S.A.W.V. please feel free to visit our website at: http://www.geocities.com/sonsofspanamwar/, for more information about the Colonel George M. Govan Outpost of the Camp which is in Mississippi. Thank you all for your time, and any help would be greatly appreciated. Kenneth H. Robison II, Camp President, Micah J.
