Spann as Zachariah's parents, and Christopher Smith III and Catherine Snelson as gr. parents. Jackie is sporadically looking for proofs of these statements, though they do seem feasible. Also, one published record: Ancestors and Descendants of Smiths" compiled and indexed by Linda G. Cheek, Easley S.C., cites the Zachariah Smith Bible, in Louisiana, as a source. Hi Barbara Please never hesitate to question anything I do. That is the only way I can get fresh perspective to find the right answers to our puzzles. This Smith family has had much work done on it but there remain many puzzles. Oh how I wish some of the direct male descendants of Zachariah and your William M. (Did John Lovelace Smith have any sons?) would do a cheek rubbing and give us a DNA Sample. We could then have a basis for further research. I keep close tabs on the Smith project waiting for these smiths to show up on the list but to no avail as yet. I have gotten a Smith cousin to provide a sample for Peter Smith. I just need some Zacahriah and Christopher Kit Smith samples to compare it with. Your William M's close association with the Lovelace, Wall and Lightner families was my first clue he might be a part of Zachariah's family. The family Tree that Nan has is probably the source of all the old lists that show William M. (Son of Zachariah and Francis) children as Zachariah, Frances Augusta, William, Betty, Barbara, Elizabeth, Augusta Matilda, William Henry and Adolphus Frederick. I have been able to find no records of the first five in any of the records I have abstracted until I ran into the possibility that your William M. of Sicily Island might be his son William. I do not believe that William and Prudence came to Natches district with their families. I know he was in the Bahamas in1791 from his daughter Elizabeth's birth record recorded in the St. Martville Catholic Church records at the time of her marriage to Robert Armstrong.(he may be a Natches native also) My William M does not show up in Wilkinson records until 1794 when James' two oldest sons are apprenticed to him. He is granted land in the Feliciannas in 1797 and buys the property in New Iberia from Nicholas Hebert in 1798. From there is trail is clearer until his death in 1811 in what was then St. Martin Parish, Louisiana. (The family owned the property where Shadows on the Tech now sits in New Iberia.) William M son of Zachariah was born 16 September 1757 according to the dates from the Zachariah Smith bible record. So he would have been married and having children when your William M. was born. Other than that until I find more records it is just my theory. There are too many William Smiths in Natches district. Will be glad to help any way I can to sort the puzzle out. Thanks! WMS was very wealthy over in Catahoula Parish before his death in 1821. Both he and Patience died young, leaving 5 daughters. Patience was a double-first cousin of Martha Kirkland, wife of Thomas Marsden Green of Springfield Pltn. in Jefferson Co. Patience and Martha each named a daughter Laminda. Laminda Green became wife of Thomas Hinds. Laminda Smith became my gt-gt-grandmother. Thanks for any info you can give me. Barbara "Sherry W. Thanks for the death dates of Zachariah and Frances. I expect they were in the Lovelace records. Thanks! Sherry -----Original Message----- From: mswilkin-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mswilkin-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Barbara Haigh Sent: Sunday, April 01, 2007 2:34 PM To: MSWILKIN@rootsweb.com Subject: [MSWILKIN] Zachariah Smith's death date, John Wall, Lovelaces,more... Hello, friends. I have Zachariah's death date as 28 Nov 1812 and Frances Prestwood Smith's death date as 3 July 1812. Unfortunately, I do not have the source of this info, but it may have come from the Thomas Lovelace Family records; I will check to see. John L.Wall, named as guardian of some of the Smith children, married Sarah, the sister of Thomas Lovelace. They built the Wall house, still standing, in Wilkinson Co. He was baptized 12 Mar 1752, Parish of St.James, Barbados, British West Indies. He married Sarah Lovelace (b.27 April 1776) in Natchez District, Spanish Territory, on 29 Jan 1795. They had 10 children. Thomas Lovelace and Barbara Smith also had 10 children. I have much info on the Lovelaces and Walls, if anyone is interested. Would love to share. I am interested in locating more information or anyone related to Mary E. Foster and the following descendents. Mary E Foster first married David McElwee in 1823 then Elijah Slocumb in 1842. Mary and Elijah had Mary A Slocum in 1843. Mary Slocum married Andrew Laird and they had Helen Laird in 1866. Helen is my ggrandmother. Barbara Silva
Sherry, am very interested in the theory that Wm M.Smith is son of Wm.Smith and Prudence Bonner-or at least that my Wm.M.Smith was this son. If WMS isn't named in W.Smith's will, where is it stated that he was a son? Please don't misunderstand...I'm not questioning, just want to be sure. Manuel" <swman@centurytel.net> wrote: John Smith did not come with them. Or at least I have not been able to find any indication in the Natches or Wilkinson County Records that he did. Nor have I been able to find him in North or South Carolina where the family came from. I am not sure William came with the extended family to Natches. He may have arrived later. There are so many Williams in Natches records it is impossible to place many of them. He appears to have had a merchant ship and traveled extensively. He was in the Feliciana's but there are few records existing for him there. The only definite records I get are in St. Martin, Iberia, and St. Mary Parishes of Louisiana from about 1797 until his death in 1811. All of the rest of the family appear to have arrived with Zachariah or shortly thereafter. Most came with their in laws in tow. The only one of Zachariah's children who I have not been able to get a handle on their spouse's family is Peter. I know nothing about Joanna Goodby's parents or history though I would love to. Perhaps some were born and remained in Anson County or elsewere. Sherry, as to the first 5 children of William, have you checked Adams Co. records. Moses Bonner had a tract of land bordering our Widow Mary Foster here on St. Catherine Creek which was also very near the tract Zachariah purchased from Wm Penrice in 1783 and later sold to James Foster before removing to Wilkinson Co. You might also wonder, was there an epidemic in between the dates of birth of these children. So many children died in these epidemics. At least Barbara can account for Wm Martin Smith. I have a copy of some research done by Carolyn Brendt of Birmingham, AL She is a descendant of Capt Peter Smith through his daughter Frances Matilda. Are any of you familiar with this? Sherry, The published research on John Foster and son Randolph, done by Gordon Leigh Briscoe of Harlingen, TX for support of the Official Texas Historical Markers and the subsequent naming of the schools in Richmond is available from the Foster Family Association Jo Ann Stuart 8418 F. M. 359 Richmond, Texas 77469 (281)232-2122 or C. Truett Bell P. O. Box 9 Pattison, Texas 77466 (281) 375-5793 Gordon applied his skills as a trial lawyer to his research on this family, and cites all his sources. The same can be said for Terry Alford's data on Thomas and Sarah Smith Foster in his book, "Prince Among Slaves." Kberry, this may contain some useful information for you as well. We do have a list of William Foster's slaves as he granted them their freedom in his will if they would return to Africa, and their transportation was provided for. If there is anyone in particular you are looking for, you may want to contact David Dreyer here in Natchez. He is researching a number of the slaves of this area as well as LA, Ibrahima's children primarily but any others he comes across. Nan

I looked again at my membership list and it shows Doug as on James Foster. Of course with Bill deceased, I do not know about his line. I have most all the material Bill had as we worked together on the Foster genealogy and annual reunion. However, Jackie recently found a posting on the net for someone in LA who claimed to have the Bible. I will have to go back through her emails to see what she turned up when she randomly called the only person by the last name in that town. Barbara, John Wall was my ggggrandfather. After he married Sara (may be Sarah) Lovelace our family had five generations of men named Lovelace. Until recently we didn't know where the name came from. My father was Lovelace Chaffe Wall. My brother is Richard Lovelace Wall. I am really interested in your information. I didn't know John Wall had a middle initial. I can track my Wall line from John's grandfather James from Derbyshire England to my grandchildren but I have a lot of holes in between. How can we exchange information? John Smith did not come with them. I have always included the slave records because it is the passage of those slaves from generation to generation of the families involved that have allowed me to track the families. In some cases they are the only surviving link. That sounds very much like the tree I found at the Jackson Mississippi archives. Someone must have placed a copy there for posterity. The legend at the bottom states that it was made for Sinai Foster and Erastus Lum for a wedding present in 1820. the original belongs to the family of Wm (Bill) Lum in Port Gibson. William Duglas Lum and William Duglas Lum Jr are the members listed as descended from Zachariah with membership #'s 214 and #398. Have you ever seen the Zachariah Smith Bible? That is supposed to be where the dates on this family came from. It was supposed to have been submitted to First Families as proof of this line. William M. Smith (son of Zachariah) had a son John Moses Smith who married Nancy Ann Smith daughter of James Smith (Son of Zachariah) m1. Sarah Phipps. John and Nancy Ann had a daughter Roseanna Smith who m. a Peter Smith on the Louisiana Coast ca. 1845. So I got a double dose of Zachariah's sons and a possibility of a third. Thanks! It just occurred to me that I have gone on the premise that all of the 1st and 2nd generation offspring of Z & F traveled with them from N.C.- Adams Co.-Wilkinson Co. Nan
HI: Thanks and much praise to the poster who included the slaves listed in the Zachariah Smith will. I'd like to encourage others to get into the habit of posting slaves in wills and other documents. This will help those of us researching our slave ancestors. Kberry ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
