    1. [MSWILKIN] Cory, Corey, Young, Davis-African Americans
    2. I am researching the above African American names. -----Original Message----- From: Virgina Ewing <vewing65@ctesc.net> To: MSWILKIN-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Mon, 16 Jul 2007 9:05 am Subject: [MSWILKIN] Note from list administrator It has been awhile since we had a posting from list members letting us know their names of interest. It is as important to let people know the names you have researched, and are willing to share, as it is to ask for help with brick walls. When you do this please put those names in the subject line. A lot of messages with the same subject line is annoying and most of them probably will be deleted without opening. These are the names I have personally researched: Ashley, Day, Cavin, Perry and many names that are connected to these families. I also have a bit on many other names including names that appear in Will Book One and part of Will book two. Do tell us your brick walls. Some one on the list might have the key to break it down. 1. [MSWILKIN] HEW DAVIS PLANTATION
    2. martybilld
    3. A recent query mentioned the Hew Davis Plantation in Wilkinson Co., MS. Can anyone tell me more about this plantation? I have been trying to make a connection with my Davis family and have been told that there is a possibility that this family was in Wilkinson Co. at one time. The date would have been around 1817 to 1830 but since I am not sure they were in Wilkinson Co. the dates are not sure either. The head of household would have been John Davis. Any help will be appreciated. Bill Davis

    3. Virginia, in response, I am working primarily on Foster/ Bain(e)/ Addkison/Draper/Zachariah Smith and wife Frances Prestwood/ Grisamore(Greisermer)Sloan, Wilkins. In Wilkinson Co. the main objective is to find where John Foster and wife Mary Smith Foster) were buried, as well as Zachariah and Frances Smith above. All the others were in MS or other states. I do have a good bit of information I will share on any of the above lines including Cory. Our brick wall is Mary (Hill?) Foster and unknown husband, parents of James, John, Thomas, William, Nancy and at least one unknown brother, mostly in Adams Co, but John in Wilkinson Co. then Texas, well documented. Mary et al came to Natchez District in 1782-3, settled on St. Catherine Creek. Mary died 1819 at the age of 92, buried at Foster Mound, Adams Co. A Mayes family bible lists Mary as being a Hill from Salem N.J. John Foster died at age 80 in the home of his son in law Major Francis S. Mayes, where he had spent his last years. Any additional information on Mary (Hill) Foster and her elusive spouse, parents of John Foster, will bring great elation to some frustrated researchers. 3. Hi Virginia - I have been researching the Leake, Flowers, Rabb, Shropshire, Cavin, Carter, Felter, Beattie (Beaty, Beatty), Ashley, Day and other families that are connected. My brick wall however, seems to be my great great grandfather Dave R. Beaty (as it is spelled on his Confederate headstone in the Beattie Family Cemetery off of Carter Loop Road). We are unable to find out who his parents were. Also a puzzlement seems to be that he doesn't show up in any census until 1880. He was married to Mary Liza Felter and she seems to show up. He should have shown up in at least the 1850 (being born in 1847/1848), 1860, and 1870. I understand that the 1890 census is not available as it was destroyed by fire in Washington. That would have been the last one he would have been in. His wife however, showed up until the 1930 as she died in 1936. My great grandfather, Benjamin Walter Beattie, should have shown up in the 1930 but doesn't in any Miss census for that year. He and his family do for 1920 though. Thanks for all of the good work that you do to keep this mailing going. I for one enjoy it! 3. For any of you how have Dish or Direct TV, or any other service that gets you the BYU channel out of Provo, Utah, there is a really good program on genealogy research called 'Questions and Ancestors'. They have one subject a week and the program is repeated several times a week. Their web site, www.ancestors.com or http://www.byub.org/ancestors/. has instructions for the beginner as well as tips to help for the experienced researcher. You can also e-mail them with questions on your personal research. Virginia

    3. There is a book of Original Signers which list the name of first property owners, the location of the property, the acreage, price, and if it was a Spanish grant, English grant, or purchased. This book has been put on microfilm and is available for rent through your nearest Family History Center. If you are not sure of the nearest FHC check www.familysearch.org for locations and the call number of the film. Almost all the records in the Chancery Clerks office before 1920, and marriage records before 1920, have been filmed by the LDS church and are available to anyone, anywhere. The original microfilm are stored in the Granite Mountain in Salt Lake and are now in the process of being digitalized. It will be a few years before they are available but some day all the records stored in the mountain will be available to anyone on the internet. Nan, You know the Richard Swayze family descends as follow.... Richard Sr./Sarah Horton Richard Jr./Hanna Budd Solomon/Mary "Polly" Boyd (2nd wife) Benjamin Franklin/Sarah Sophronia Farrar... In the Decendants of the Jersey Settlers book (Volume I, pg. 598) I found the following... "Sarah Sophronia Farrar, daughter of Daniel Farrar and Eliza King, b. Feb. 19, 1830 m. 1847, Benjamin Franklin Swayze of Wash-a-way plantation. They were children of first cousins, Solomon Swayze being Benjamin's father. By purchase they came into possession of some of the old Nathan Swayze property east of Martin's creek, therefore east of Kingston and Commencement plantations. They called their home "Frogmore." They had five children. Their death dates are not recorded. Because it is known that Sophronia and Benjamin Franklin are buried in the King family cemetery without markers it is presumed they died during the Civil War." Apparently Benjamin Franklin Swayze and Sarah Sophronia Farrar lived on Frogmore Plantation for quiet sometime because one of their sons (William Holliday Swayze) married Belle Sharpe. And again in The Decendants of the Jersey Settlers book (Volume I, pg. 309) there is a picture of Belle Sharpe Swayze with the caption of "Wife of William Holliday Swayze, Frogmore Plantation, Kingston, Mississippi" Photo courtesy of Daniel William Huff, Baton Rouge, LA Hope this helps Brenda McCurley White

    3. I remember SEVERAL MONTHS ago a question on the List concerning Frogmore Plantation in Adams County. It was supposed to be located in the Kingston, Adams County vicinity. Never heard of it, even though I live in the Kingston community. BUT, Saturday evening on one of my..."got to get out of the house, tired of working and ride" moods..... ...about 10.5 miles down Kingston Road, on the left hand side, I saw a road sign with Frogmore Plantation Lane. Bet this is the original plantation site!!! For people that know the Kingston Road (going south), the road makes a V-- go to the left you are going toward the Homochitto Forrest....go to the right you are going toward Hutchins Landing Road which will eventually come out on Hwy. 61 South. Frogmore Plantation Lane is located about 2 miles from the above V on the left. and...about 1 mile AFTER Commencement Plantation that was/is owned by Webb Carter and...about 1.5 miles BEFORE Courtland Plantation. and...about 3 or 4 miles from the Homochitto Forrest. Now, if I have not totally confused you...it's worth pursuing if you are looking for the original Frogmore Plantation in Natchez. Brenda McCurley White

I would like to know where he came from. He is later than our John Thompson (1763-1846), who came from Barnwell District to Amite Co. in 1810. That Thompson family had gone to Barnwell District in the mid-1790's from Halifax Co., NC. I have been to the old John Thompson family cemetery out in the woods west of Liberty, MS, and his tombstone is still there.
