Pike County Mississippi had one of the largest logging railroads built by John James [J J] White, the Liberty-White Railroad. Captain White was the first man to build a tram railroad in the state of Mississippi for hauling logs. The Liberty White, which began running in 1904, also carried cotton, supplies, cattle and mail. The passenger cars gave residents in rural Amite County convenient, daily transportation to major towns. Stops between McComb and Liberty in Amite County were Irene, Glading, Peoria and Marshalltown. In 1912 the J J White Lumber Company moved to Columbia. The Liberty White continued operating until 1921 or 1922 when it was dissolved. This information is from the March 31, 1972 Centennial Edition of the McComb Enterprise-Journal and an article written by Glenda Sloan for the REA Paper Today/April 2001, "The Silent Whistle of the Liberty White". -----Original Message----- From: mswilkin-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:mswilkin-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, July 23, 2007 10:48 PM To: MSWILKIN-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [MSWILKIN] Logging Railroads This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. this has been a very tough line for me. I have nothing but the marriage of Hartwell Stafford to Elizabeth Turberville. I know nothing else. When I have looked, I can't find anything in the LDS library or on Ancestry.com, but I admit, I have not focused on this family. I am also trying to find the connection between the Stafford and Iler family. I have a document that has an Iler living with them. I am trying to find out any information on the Stafford, Turberville and Hutcheson families. I know that Hartwell Stafford owned a great deal of property according to the census, and some time ago on this list there was mention of a Stafford family plantation or cemetery, but that is all I have. I would think that owning that much property there would be more information on him and his family. I also know that John Williams Hutcheson married twice, second time to Charlotte Virginia Scudder and he is buried in the Scudder family cemetery outside of Woodville. I've copied my file on what I have on these families but would sure like to know more about them. Thank you, Stacy McSwain Generation No. 1 1. Researching the location of land on the Homochitto River owned by William Scott. In 1787, William Scott petitioned the Gov of Louisiana for the grant of a 200 acre tract of land "on the east side of the south fork, and about 17 miles from the Fort on the Homochitto River." How long did William and wife Clara and their four children, Thomas, William, Gabriel and Mary Elizabeth, live in this area of the Mississippi Territory? Gabriel and Mary Eliz moved on to Jefferson Co., MS. Where are Thomas & William? Headed to my local LDS library tomorrow. HI: I'm researching my great-great grandfather CHARLES BROWN. He was?found hanged in the Mount Pleasant section of?Wilkinson Co. in September, 1879 after being taken from the home of WILBERT PHARES. He was a carpenter and was building a house for Phares when he was killed. The U.S. Mortality Census says Brown was from MS and had lived in East Feliciana Parish, LA for 14 years. ? I'd like to find out whether Charles was from Wilkinson County.?I'm assuming he?was very likely a slave, although my grandfather told me that the Browns were from VA and were never slaves. I have found a Charles and his son enslaved on the McGhee plantation in Wilkinson in the 1860s but have no evidence that this was Charles and his father. Any tips as to how to research whether Charles was from Wilkinson Co. are appreciated. I'd also like to find out how long Charles worked for Wilbert Phares and whether he worked for other residents. Thanks, Kberry ________________________________________________________________________ AOL now offers free email to everyone. Find out more about what's free from AOL at AOL.com.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I thought the footnotes would be carried through to the digest but I was wrong. The Administer pages have changed a lot from the one I was accustom to using but I think I have the footnotes included in the Digest now. The footnotes will appear at the bottom of each message on the regular list. I don't know how they will appear on the digest, maybe just once, at the end. The footnotes should be at the end of the digest that includes this message. Virginia ----- Since I receive this list in digest...and found the footnotes are not included... I thought that I would take a moment to ask what what those URL's are. I'm sure that there are other list members who also receive in digest format. Thank you VERY much, Lisa
