    1. [MSWILKIN] Lilly Gertrude Garrotte/ Annice Luvilla Bennett
    2. Virginia Ewing
    3. I am currently going through notes I have taken over the years, and find I had several bits of information I did not know I had. I am currently updating my "Ashleys of Wilkinson county, Mississippi and related families" I am adding everything I can find, including census, deeds, notes for interviews, etc. I hope to have it completed this year. I have been working on it for over 20 years and I will be glad to get it finally to a point where I feel it is as complete as I can make it. The information below is copy/pasted from the book. This is the Thomas Napoleon Ashley family. There has been a question as the surnames of the two sisters below. The added information was given me by Sidney Johnson, and I can not swear it is correct, but I did check the marriage records in Wilkinson county and find the marriages listed there. A7B-1c HIRAM CHESTERFIELD ASHLEY Born: 30 Aug. 1883 Wilkinson co., MS Died: 2 June 1954 in Wilkinson county, MS Buried: Hopewell, Wilkinson, MS Married: 2 Aug. 1903 Wilkinson co., MS ANNICE LUVILLA BENNETT She is listed as ANNIE JARROTTE, from LA, in records I received from Ada Ashley Smith. From Shirley Clark Ashley of Raymondville,Texas: Note: Mississippi State Board of health-Division of Vital Statistics, issued on the 12 day of July, 1943, shows the mother of Casey Clarence Ashley was Annice Bennett, not Jarrett. [It seems Jarrett was her stepfather.] She is the sister of Lilly Gertrude below and would be the d/o Sophrona J. Bennet. Sophrona J. Bennet was the sister of James Hilton Bennett who md. Mary Mae Ashley, sister of Hiram and William Ashley. A7B-1d WILLIAM ASHLEY Born: 17 Mar 1885 Wilkinson co., MS Died: 24 June 1956 Buried: Hopewell, Wilkinson, MS Married: 16 Feb. 1905 Wilkinson co., MS Wife: LILLY GERTRUDE JARROTTE Born: 5 Feb. 1889 LA Died: 30 July 1962 Buried: Hopewell, Wilkinson, MS I was told this lady was the sister of Annice Luvilla Bennet above. Sidney Johnson, life long resident of Wilkinson county, said Lilly Gertrude Jarrotte was the daughter of James M. Jarrotte & Sophrona J. Bennet. Sophrona J. Bennet md. James W. Jarrotte, 9 Sept 1884 Wilkinson county, MS. Sidney said Sophrona J. Bennet, d/o Letha Ann McCearley and James T. Bennet of TN. Letha Ann McCearly md. James T. Bennet Oct 1866, Wilkinson county, MS.

    1. [MSWILKIN] Wilkinson county records available through FHCs.
    2. Virginia Ewing
    3. I have been out of town for awhile and am just getting back to reading my e-mails. the first question I want to answer is: What is the FHC. That is the Family History Centers located in most parts of the World and part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints's Family History Library of Salt Lake Center. The catalog for the FHL is on line at www.familysearch.org. The catalog list everything available at the FHL in Salt Lake. Most of the microfilm and microfich are available to rent through your local FHC. You can find a listing of most FHC at www.familysearch.org. There is also a free genealogy progam, PAF, that can be downloaded. It is the one I use. Some people send a lot of money for other programs that suit them, but this is a good program and it's FREE. When you check the FHL catalog for Wilkinson county you will find all of the marriage records, black and white, are on microfilm. All of the early inventory, deed, probate and Will books are on microfilm. These run into the 1900s and they are the original documents. They cost about $3.25 to rent a microfilm for one month. For the same amount you can extent the loan for another 2 months. If your FHC director allows you to have indefinte loan film, depending on the space available in her file cabinet, you can pay another $3.25 and have the film kept at the FHC for as long as you need it. I have been the the Woodville court house many times, especially before we got a FHC in our town, and I perfer using the film. I find them much easier to read and it's much cheaper than making a trip to MS. I still go back for a few things that aren't on microfilm, as only a few of the crimial and civil court cases are on microfilm. As for the Woodville Republician, only a few of the issues are on microfilm, these are in the 1820s. The print on this is very small and I have dificulty reading them. Thank fully, I now have Judy and her eyes to help me out. Even if you are in Wyoming, you can still research the Wilkinson county records. I don't know where you live, I lived in Gillette. They have a FHC. Virginia

    2. I have been in Wilkinson Co. Court House many times and have seen copies of the Republican, but never thought to read them. Most of the copies in the Court House are aged and very fragile. I had no idea there was such a margin of difference. As helpful as the collection has been, I agree that a disclaimer would have been appropriate. Thanks for the bit about the copies available thru FHC.

    2. Judith A Trolinger
    3. Hello, The reason I'm responding to this, has to do with these books (I have them on CD-there is also a volume 6)..Don't stop here! I recently had a chance to go thru (on microfilm) the actual newspapers for just 1832-33. I was shocked at how much these volumes have left out!! The author should have given warning in the Intro, that the entries she was making were very random and by no means complete! On just one of the pages, I finally found mention of the SHELBY that I knew had to be in Wilkinson Co..They are not mentioned in any of these books..So then I began to compare what I was looking at on just this one page..The book lists only about 6 or 7 names-while the original page listed dozens of people! The newspapers are available thru the FHCs..I highly recommend their use..Then too, we are always being told to "Go to the original source" :-)) And they are fun reading Happy Holiday's!
