1. [MSWILKIN] Mr. Thos. White---Wilkinson Co.
2. Ray Bartlett
3. In doing research for ancestors, I found that one of Ms. Wiese's books of "The Woodville Republican" contained an interesting article concerning a Daniel Bartlet who was found dead on 8 March 1838 near the residence of a Mr. Thos. White on Buffaloe. My surname is BARTLETT and I am trying to locate my ancestors. My ggrandfather, William W. Bartlett was born near Woodville, MS in 1823. Is there anyone in genealogyland who might be descended from this Thos. White, know anything about him, or this Daniel Bartlet(t) mentioned, or his heirs, if any. I checked the probate files in Woodville, but could not find anything on any Bartletts from 1838-1844. There is a Daniel Bartlett mentioned in the 1830 census in Wilkinson Co. and Virginia has a Daniel Bartlett serving on a jury in 1822. Thank you Virginia for your transcriptions. In addition, I checked the cemetery listings for the county and could find no burial site for the aforementioned Daniel Bartlet. I realize that I am providing more information than may be necessary, but only local people might be able to assist me since I live in LA. Thank you in advance for your help. Ray Bartlett

1. [MSWILKIN] about the IGI, Ancestral File and more
2. Virginia Ewing
3. For those who do not know, I am a Mormon and was the director of the FHC for many years. If you are looking for marriage records on the IGI and there is an M before the source number [example M59043] it was a marriage extraction. Extractions are done from microfilmed or Photocopies of the original records. The data cards will be filled out by two people, and then proofed by a third. Then the data is typed into a special computer file, using the data cards. The computer disk is then passed to yet another person who retyped all of the data, using the original records. That person could not see what had been typed into the program previously but if there was a difference, the computer noted it. If there where 3 mistakes in the entire program, it all had to be done over. All of this by voluteers. When the program was aceptable here it was returned to San Antonio where it was checked again before being sent to Salt Lake where it was checked yet again. I headed the extraction program for a short time and I can assure you, we do try to get it right. Marriages submitted by a family member does not have a letter before the source number. Sometimes, when there is no birth record we have to go with 'best guess'. When a member of the LDS church dies, their name, birth date and parents are added to the IGI at the next update. This information is from records the member filled out when joining the church. It includes birth date and place, and the name of both parents. My George Perry, Jr, joined the LDS church shortly before he died. On the IGI his mother's name is Nancy Rogers. That was a great help as early researchers had her as Nancy Roddy. The IGI is used in research to help you locate the place of birth or if the record says [of] it means they where known to reside in that state, county or country. Check census, marriages, deeds, wills, etc, of that area to find more on the family. The Ancestral File and the on-line Pedigree file are summited by members and non members, for the purpose of contacting other researchers and shareing their family research. Sometimes they are a great source of imformation, other times they are totally incorrect. If you are a Day researcher, either Amite or Wilkinson, be aware that both the IGI and Ancestral File have confused the two families. If you are a Wilkinson county Day descendant,or Ashley, Cavin or Perry, contact me and I will send what I have on your direct line and I am always open to corrections and additions. I live in Texas. I do most of my research from microfilm. Wilkinson county marriage, black and white; deeds; wills; inventory and appraisials; probates and many other records are on microfilm and cost $3.25 to rent for oen month, another $3.25 to renew for another two months and another $3.25 will put it on indenifite loan. A total of $9.75 will keep the film there as long as you have need of it. These are the original record books, just as you would find them in the Woodville courthouse, except not as heavy or as dusty. . Virginia

1. [MSWILKIN] Re: MSWILKIN-D Digest V03 #14
2. For a small fee, I anticipate you could get a copy of the original marriage bond or license from Wilkinson Co. I was successful in doing so for my ancestors, and the bond or license (I forget which it was) provided me a good deal of information about bondsmen, etc. Or, if you are near an LDS center, you MAY (no guarantees) find the information on film(s) which you can order from Salt Lake City--for a small fee. (In fact, now that I think about it, I believe I got the information from a film rather than from the county clerk.) Take a look at the LDS catalog: www.familysearch.org The link is on the lower right of the screen. Type in Wilkinson and then the state, and then look for vital records to learn whether the marriage record has been filmed for the time you desire. Also, you might try typing in your surname(s) in the catalog and see whether there are any family histories which pertain to that surname. Much of the IGI (International Genealogical Index) and particularly the Ancestral File has flawed information, so don't count on that source too heavily. E.W.Wallace E.W.Wallace

3. As far as the IGI goes, you have to look at the source. If it was submitted by a patron, then take it with a grain of salt and prove the data from original sources. Otherwise, it may have come from an original document from a clerk's office. Not all of the IGI is faulty. You also have to remember that a clerk can sometimes make a mistake as well. I really enjoy using the microfilms which show you an original. These are fabulous and the staff at any FHC are quite friendly and helpful. 1. [MSWILKIN] Kossuth Johnson and his 2 wives
2. Tina Hall
3. Hi all! I was looking for Kossuth Johnson in the 1900 and 1910 censuses. I just located him in 1900. There was mention that he had first married at age 28 and that was in 1892. This didn't match with the wife I had him with in 1920, so I had to go looking for him. 1900 Federal Census Wilkinson co., MS, Woodville h/h #11/12 JOHNSON, Kossuth F. head WM Aug 1864 35 md. 8 yrs MS MS MS merchant - , Annie wife WF April 1868 32 md. 8 yrs 4 children/3 living LA SC SC - , Eurena dau WF May 1894 6 LA MS LA at school - , Albert S. son WM Feb 1896 4 LA MS LA - , William T. son WM Jan 1900 4/12 MS MS LA ADAMS, Sallie W. MIL WF Jan 1839 61 Wd. 8 children/5 living SC SC SC This gives me that he married in 1892 Annie (possibly Adams). Her mother could have remarried. I am curious about this Albert S. 3. Tina, I'm glad we've finallly got a connection! I believe we have tried to "claim kin" in the past through your Wilkinson County Ashleys. Even tho my recent ancestors came from Wilkinson County, they originated in Franklin County. Joseph' s father was James Ashley b1792 and this is my "road block" his mother was Mary "Polly" Nevill (I believe) b 1791. There is some mention of her being from Maryland and him from Louisiana. Joseph's only sib(to my knowledge) was George b1827 and he married a sister to Sarah Bowlin--Elizabeth b 1823. Joseph and Sarah's children were Seymore, Cicero, George B( my gggrandfather) , and Steven Van. I think that a lot of Franklin County residents went to Amite County to get married. Good to hear from you. Tim

1. [MSWILKIN] Re: MSWILKIN-D Digest V03 #9
2. Searching for Austin JOnes - or any other early Mississippi resident Well, if you have more time than money, you may want to look at the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) website at the following URL and try to track down all the Joneses who may have put in a claim for land in Mississippi, particulary in the early days. http://www.glorecords.blm.gov Of course, this could be an overwhelming task with a name like Jones. The search link is in the green stripe at the top. To search, I inserted the name jones, and then I started out with a (first letter of alphabet). Try it for b and so on--26 letters in all. That may speed your search somewhat. A person's name (A. Jones) came up, but he put in his patent claim in 1850, which would have been too late for a man whom you think MAY have been the father of your Austin Jones born in the 1820s, you say, in Mississippi. This early date implies that his father got to Mississippi soon after the Louisiana Purchase. (Do some research on the Louisiana Purchase and then some research on the formation of Mississippi, which at first was a territory. An encyclopedia--American, not British--probably can help out here.) You want to find a candidate Jones who probably filed for a patent in the 1820s or 1830s. I understand people who grew cotton for a living piled into Mississippi (from all over, not just the South) after the invention of the cotton gin, because they now could grow more cotton and process it easier than in the past. They needed more land than the puny tracts which they owned in their previous residence. (Look up either cotton gin or Eli Whitney, while you are at it.) One would think that only Southerners came to Mississippi, but a reading of the 1850 census--birthplaces alone--is quite revealing. Lots of Pennsylvanians, and some of them big slave-owners. There is a fairly good book called Tracing Your Mississippi Ancestors by Anne S. Lipscomb & Kathleen S. Hutchison, published by University Press of Mississippi in 1994. I imagine it is still in print. Incidentally, the Fam Hist Library in Salt Lake City has a good many films for Wilkinson Co. and Copiah Co., MS. I know, because I have used them. Look at the catalog on www.familysearch.org The link is on the lower right. Also near there is a link to a list of over 3,500 fam hist centers around the world. You can borrow film for a short time for a limited amount of money through a nearby LDS center--and some people tell me some public libraries have agreements with FHL. Ask--genealogists need to ask LOTS of questions. There is so much to know. E.W.Wallace Happy hunting!
