In case researchers are near an LDS family history center, there are 29 reels of film held by the Family History Library of marriages in Wilkinson Co., MS--including some black marriages--quite a few films of those. The FHL catalog is online at www.familysearch.org The link to the catalog is on the lower right. Type in locality search - Wilkinson and then Mississippi (lower case OK) Then go all the way to the bottom of the topics to Vital Records. Click on that. You cannot borrow the books, unless they have been filmed. Look for a tab at the top right which says View Film Notes (or some such wording). You may borrow, for a small fee for a short time, most of the films held by the Family History Library. In case there is no LDS center near you, ask your public library whether they have an agreement with FHL in Salt Lake City. Some e-mail correspondents tell me that their local libraries have such an agreement. I have not confirmed that statement. But, if you don't ask, you will never know! E.W.Wallace While you are on the website, try the 1880 census which is online. The search engine doesn't always work well--the census-taker misspelled names, surname and given name, and then the transcribers also made some bad boo-boos! Try to outsmart it by misspelling names or giving an unusual first name and the county! EWW
It's been a while since I posted this request: Does anyone have any information on a John Robert Holliday who married a widow "Mrs. Davis" Thanks Linda [email protected]
No it does not. Thank you for sharing.
Does anyone have any information on the Turberville family in Wilkinson Co. Mississippi? I'm looking for information on Elizabeth Turberville that married Hartwell Stafford and any information on Hartwell Stafford. thank you all, Stacy McSwain
"Are any of your Bonds African Americans. I have been searching the Bonds/Barnes family in Wilkinson and Amite County. I have a lot of family information for both counties. I am will to share. Who were the parents of Amanda Bonds married to William Cobb." As far as I know, none of my BONDS were African American. I don't know the names of Arminda's parents - the 1850 US census, Amite Co, shows her birthplace as Amite Co, MS and her son John's death certificate shows his mother's birthplace as Gloster. She would have been born 1829-1830. Does this match anything in your BONDS files? Thanks, Kay
"It's so great to finally see some familiar names on the Wilkinson website. Your Minerva COBB is the younger sister of my great grandmother Amanda Tennessee COBB. Have you been able to research this branch of COBBS? I have some info on them, such as the father, Joshua COBB is buried at Mt. Carmel cemetery in Wilkinson County, but have been unable to find parents of Joshua. We believe that the mother of Minerva and Amanda was Louisa McFATE. Pat Verner" Pat, I don't have much information about this COBB line, but we've always believed that Minerva and Amanda's parents were named Joseph and Mary - this is based on family lore and the 1860 US census listing for Amite Co for: Cobb, Joseph age 35 " , Mary age 35 " , Thomas age 19 " , Louisa age 15 " , Margaret age 13 " , Amanda age 11 " , Minerva age 9 Do you know who Joseph and Mary are, if they're not the parents of this family? Also, another individual emailed me off list asking for any info about Amanda and Minerva's sister Louisa. I don't have any info, do you? (Sorry for the delay in this reply but I was ill for a couple days.) Thanks, Kay in PA
1st. I would liket to go on record --again--his list is for WILKINSON COUNTY MISSISSIPPI. It it does not concern this county, or at least the state, don't send it to this list. If you have something you think might be of interest to the list, send it to me. [email protected] If I think it is suitable, I will forward it to the list. 2nd. I would like to think Judy for the explaination of this bill. I don't know how many people on the list live in Texas but Judy and I do. I have known her for years and you can rely on anything she tells you.. Virginia
> Subject: Fwd: Legislation to close records This was sent to me by a > > fellow genealogist....doesn't sound like a good idea for us that are > > researching....thought you may be interested....Geraldine > The reason for wanting to make this DD form- discharge record- off limits is because they contain the servicemembers Social Security number. Many of these military vets are still living. At the time my husband registered his at the courthouse, nothing was said about them being made available to the general public-or we wouldn't have done it! The Department of Defense [DOD] didn't come into being until 1948...in 1970 the military switched from their Serial # to the SS#. Personally I think what needs to be changed, is to stop the use of SS# by everyone and their puppy! My original card states in capital letters "not for identification". For SS use only. Things that can be done - NEVER carry your SS in purse or wallet-refuse to write your SS# on checks-If people complain enough, if can have an effect ...Contact your credit card companies or businesses that use the mother's maiden name for identification, and have it changed to something else..We had no problem doing this.. ID theft is a booming business, and really putting a serious dent in our genealogy research! But to the best of my knowledge this closure will not affect the obtaining of the earlier military records-Just the DD form. Since this is the Wilkinson Co MS mail list: I am researching the DOANE, DUNBAR, DUNLOP, SHELBYs, that were in this county back in the late 1790s, early 1800s. Most of these bills would close or reduce access to records we use. Mic is the owner of Barnett Books and is a regular vendor at our Seminar. Last year his large area was in the middle of the vendor room. He also writes a Saturday column for the Houston Chronicle. Please read the message and get on the mail list and write letters to let your representatives know how you feel. Otherwise, we may lose even more access to the records. Thanks, James Hollas AGS President ---------------------------------------------------- Hi Everyone: As the Texas Liaison for the Joint (National Genealogical Society/Federation of Genealogical Societies) NGS-FGS Records Preservation and Access Committee I have set up both a website and email mailing list to aid us in lobbying the Texas Legislature. The Legislature currently has several bills pending which seek to close records to the public. Information about these bills is on the website. This website is a place where we can post information about particular bills and how to locate legislators to contact. The mailing list is designed as a forum for us genealogists to communicate quickly and be able to coordinate activities in quick mode should we have to do so. And we already have to do so. There is a hearing at 1:30 or whenever the committee earlier in the day adjourns- for the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee discussing SB81 and SB 85 which both want to close DD214-Military Discharge records in the county clerk's offices. The hearing will be held in the Betty King Committee Room in Austin. Anyone who attend is asked to do so I have included others from states outside the Republic of Texas in this email so they can see what we are doing here. They might wish to monitor what we do or just follow our lead and do something similar in their own state. The website is located at http://micbarnette.bravepages.com There is a page on the website where one may go to subscribe to the mailing list, however you may do so by following the attached directions The mailing list may be subscribed to by sending an email to [email protected] in the message area of the email type subscribe. There is a digest mode at [email protected] but it may be held up 12 hours before being sent. For speedier mail, at least during the legislative season when it might count, I would recommend subscribing to the L mode rather than the D mode. After the legislative season there may not be anything to say on this list. It will already have been said and voted upon. The basic things to be concerned with at his point is about 8 bills pending in the House and the Senate which aim to close DD214/Military Discharges in Texas. Plus two new bills, one in the House and one in the Senate wanting to extend the time birth records are closed in Texas from 50 years to 75 years. Plus a bill wanting to close marriage applications to the public. Plus TEXSHARE/TIFF funding for schools and libraries and electronic database access. Plus HIPPA which I don't know much about but which is expected to go into effect April 14 and will probably close records which have medical records or information in them. This bill effects insurance and medical companies and offices. I remember hearing some people talking about this last week they were not into genealogy. Now I have had someone in a county clerk's office ask me about the same thing and said it may affect their records. So, we may have to address this problem, too. The whole crux of closing public records is all about Identity Theft and the fear of it. People feel that if a record is available for use someone must be stealing their identity. So, Identity theft and how to protect public records from thieves and convince public officials not to pass laws closing them is going to be our goal at least as I envision it. Please pass this email to everyone in every society. We will need some some numbers to show the legislature we care. We are starting late in the legislative season and are therefore already behind. Hi Virginia, Do you have information: John Hampden Randolph born in Lunenburg Co., Virginia to Peter Randolph and Sallye Cooke. Married Emily Jane Liddell 1837 in Woodville Seeking information regarding his life in VA and Woodville (1819) before moving to Iberville Parish, LA 1841, and building Nottoway Plantation 1855. Virginia, Have you seen the will of John or Hugh Connell? John Connell died around 1842. I have recently found out that my African ancestors were on the Connell plantation. The same plantation was part of the Charles Percy estate. Some of my ancestors names are included in the Charles Percy will, and also were part of the Connell plantation when it was inherited by Dr. J C Patrick. Does anyone have information on the Tilsey/Edgefield plantation that was part of the Charles Percy land, later owned by John Connell and passed on to Dr. J C Patrick? Regards, Alvin Blakes

Hello to all. I am posting this message to two Mississippi county lists and to several surname lists so I apologize in advance if you receive this more than once. My mother and I are planning to travel to southwestern Mississippi in the summer or early fall of 2003 to explore family history resources and sites in Wilkinson and Amite counties. My primary request is: does anyone know of any family reunions planned for the McCURLEY/McCEARLEY, COBB, PERRY, or BONDS families? The census-taker as well as the transcribers of the index were careless in their spelling, not only of forenames but also of surnames. Do not give the search engine too much information, or it will get thoroughly confused. You can do this: use the first three letters of the surname and then add an asterisk (a wild card) And misspell the first three letters. Change the vowel if necessary, and sometimes P and B are mixed up. If you give the search engine too much information, it gets stubborn. Also, check out the neighbors. Some people tell me they search the community itself rather than a particular family. I must try that.
