Dear Pat, I'm grateful that you took the time and made the effort to try to help with my query. I had done an internet search and come up with the same three entries. I've already checked most of the census reports for both MS and LA, but can't seem to find the slave "John" bought by John B. Scudder. I haven't found William in the 1870. It's a puzzlement. Social Security records indicate William's parents to be John and Rebecca Carb, but I have yet to locate them in the census. I felt that at least there was some genealogical "coincidence" in the slave's name, the ss records, and the plantation owner's name. I wondered how to check slave schedules long distance. Is there a way to get more information from the court records that what is online? Something that might indicate the origins of the slave "John"? Again, thank you so much. I am always amazed and grateful for the interest and extreme efforts made by folks to help one another. I hope one day I can return the favor(s). Georgia Whitson Philadelphia, PA

Dear Georgia Whitson, When I am stumped on a surname or a place, I dip into the internet by using the search engine www.google.com Since Scudder is not such a common name (despite Laura Scudder), I typed in quotation marks "scudder family" and came up with lots of links. I suggest you try some of those links and see if anyone knows about the Scudders in Mississippi. (My lineage is cursed with common surnames, and so google.com doesn't help me a lot.) Even though that surname Scudder seems to be known in New England, don't rule out that some of them may have come to Mississippi. II was surprised to read in the 1850 census of Warren Co., MS (Jackson area) that several of the large plantation owners (and consequently slaveowners) were born in such places as Pennsylvania. The Mississippi River was the superhighway of the US [after the Louisiana Purchase] prior to the establishment of a good railway network. And, of course, I am old enough to know when there were hardly any superhighways in the US--mostly attributed to the activities of General Eisenhower when he became president. E.W.Wallace
Hello... Does anyone on the list have any information regarding a William Scudder s/o John and Rebecca Carp b. ca 1867 in Woodville? I've managed to find Elizabeth Scudder, widow of Thomas and her family in the 1860 census. It appears from the census that Elizabeth might have been a plantation owner. I am interested in ascertaining whether or not William might be connected to her. William is black. Elizabeth and her family are white. There are two black children in the census with the surname Scudder in the 1870 census. They are Ella and Ann. I can find no mention of John Scudder in Woodville. I suspect a connection but cannot determine what it is. Thanks for any help anyone can offer. Regards, Georgia Whitson
In re: Brick Walls. My 2X great grandfather was WILLIAM LAWSON who married MARY JONES, Wilk. Co., 1806. (Mary's father was David Jones.) Other than census records ending in 1830, have been able to find no other documentation about William, i.e. where he was before coming to the Natchez District, his parents, or anything else having to do with his background. Apparently, he owned no property, which seems strange for the time, but Mary did inherit from her father, a part of which, possibly all, was sold to a son-in-law, Letson Purdy who married their daughter, Mary, 1827 Wilkinson Co., Ms. Tx property records suggest couple moved there (have not explored their leaving Wilkinson Co. i.e. disposition of property mentioned.) Only two other children of William and Mary, have been identified, one being my great grandfather, David Jones Lawson, and Mathilda, assumed to be a sister by exclusion, who married Delzel Eby, Wilk., 1837. Have researched, to lesser and greater extent, all Lawsons found in the contiguous Counties and Parishes. The 1830 census for William suggested a larger family than has been identified. William is believed to have lived all of his years in Ft. Adams. In Military records of the War of 1812, a William McF. Lawson is listed serving in a Louisiana unit. No records could be been found in the Federal Archives, although other records show "box" and "roll" numbers. Considering the geographical location of Ft. Adams, serving in La doesn't seem questionable. Additionally, there were others of the same surname living in the Felicianas around this time, but no connection to William has been made. Any suggestions, other than Wilkinson property records which I have yet to try and trace back, would be appreciated. Letson Purdy's property record suggested location in present day Harris Co. Texas.
Wall and Lovelace Barbara Haigh Kathy Casagranda I have found previous emails that I am not certain I answered. They pertain to WALL-LOVELACE and WALL in Wilkinson County, Mississippi. With regard to the 1813 tax records and 1825 census you mentioned, I compared your notes to my genealogy information and found either corroborating or irrelevant similarities. I hope this helps. My WALL line is: James Wall 1668-1729, Derbyshire, England to Barbados; his son John Wall (1704-?) Barbados; his son John Wall (1752-1813) Barbados to Wilkinson County, MS. During the early 1800s John Wall was mentioned frequently in land, will executions, etc. in Wilkinson County along with his brothers and Fielding Davis (no relation, who seemed to be into everything). John Wall had at least nine children with Sarah Lovelace (1776-1833). Her father was John Lovelace (1740-1816) and she had a brother, John Lovelace (1774-1825). She had eleven brothers and sisters. John Wall and Sarah Lovelace’s children were: Alexander Edward Wall 1806-1866 Francis Pousset Wall ?-? Mary Eleanor Wall ?-? Jane Catherine Wall ?-? Eliza Ann Wall ?-? (May have married Mr. Ginn) Henry Hughson Wall ?-? William Wilkins Wall ?-? John Lovelace Wall ?-? Margaret Lovelace Wall ?-? Thomas P. Wall ?-? After the WALL-LOVELACE marriage in 1795, all of the next six generations of WALL had the given name of Lovelace. Alexander Edward Wall married Charlotte Jane Davis (1823-1845) in 1837 in Wilkinson County. The children of this marriage were: A. Edward Wall, Md. (1839-1912) Francis Lovelace Wall (1842-1908) William Davis Wall, Md. (1843-1929) Samuel Davis Wall (1845-?) After Charlotte Jane Davis Wall died in 1845, Alexander Edward married again to Geraldine Black, about 1845, and they had at least four children. I have not found a Christopher Wall. There are at least three Wall Cemeteries in the county, but they were not cared for through the years and now are in somewhat remote and difficult to access locations. I went there but did not get to the headstones. The historical society was helpful with the location information. I hope all of this helps. Frank Wall 38 Calm Sea Drive Salem, SC 29676

One of my brick walls is my great-grandmother, Cathering "Kate" Vining (Rev. Uriah Vining line) who married a William J. Hawkins in Wilkinson County on December 4, 1865. She later married James McCaa (of East Baton Rouge Parish) in Wilkinson County on April 29, 1871. I have not been able to find any records for W. J. Hawkins, birth, death, etc. James McCaa left Kate after they lived in East Baton Rouge Parish and family lore mentions that he went back to Mississippi and was never heard from again. My grandfather McCaa was born in Fort Adams so I assumed that they lived in that area. I have not been able to find any information, census, death, etc., about James either. Any help would be appreciated. Ladye McCaa Harveston
Merry, as you know, I have researched the Perry line back into SC where I found George mentioned in a gift of deed from his father, Job Perry, and selling property with wife Nancy. I have read George Perry's will and studied the census and land records. I have checked the IGI for their son George Perry, Jrs, records. George joined the LDS church just a few years before his death. He gave the name of his parents as George Perry and Nancy Rogers. George also witnessed the permission for his sister Sarah to md. William Sturdivant. Never have I seen any document pertaining to him or Nancy in any name other than just plain George and Nancy. I have seen these other names but only on webpages put up by people who do not give a source or explanation of where they got the names. On one of these webpages they had the wrong parents for George Perry, Sr. Can't remember who now, but not Job. It is certain that the George Perry who came to Wilkinson co. was the son of Job Perry as he witnessed the permission slip for the marriage of sister Sarah Perry to William Sturdivant. I can't find the parents of the following Wilkinson Co., MS families. Bell John Bell, b. Abt. 1775 in VA(?), d. abt. 1824 Wilkinson Co., MS. John married Elizabeth Hunter (dau. of Henry Hunter) in VA(?) abt. 1791. It is believed they moved from Virginia to South Carolina between 1794-1799. According to children's birth places and dates, John and Elizabeth must have been married in Virginia. Their son William Henry was born 7/15/1794 in Virgnia. Their son John was born abt. 1799 in South Carolina. John Bell, Sr. first shows up in the 1805 Wilkinson Co., MS Census -- John Bell 2-3-5-0-0-11-21, Wilkinson Co., MS Census. The 1824 Probate Court Book 3, p. 39 shows "Elizabeth Bell widow of John Bell relinquished her right of Administer estate. William H. Bell and Gerard Brandon granted Administrators." Later records show Elizabeth Bell widow of John Bell resided in Pinckneyville, MS. Division of property of John Bell was made to: Henry H. Bell, Margaret Bell, Mary Bell, Thomas Bell & wife, James Bell, Elisha Bell, John Bell, Nasworthy Bell. Other children were Lucy Hart Bell Davis, William H. Bell, Sarah Ann Bell Ginn, James Craig Bell and Martha "Patsy" Bell Davis. Burke Jonathan Burke b. Abt. 1768 in Ireland and married Hannah William about 1790 in either SC or NC. I do not know if Jonathan or Hannah Burke ever lived in Wilkinson Co., but their daughter Rebecca Burke, b. abt. 1790 in VA (according to 1850 Wilkinson Co., MS Census Records)married Joshua Presler in Wilkinson Co., MS 11/25/1810. Jonathan and Hannah's children were: Cynthia Burke Morrison, Rebecca Burke Presler, Benjamin Franklin Burke, Amelia "Milly" Burke Presler, Samuel Burke, William Burke, James Burke, Levinia Burke Chick, and Mahala Burke. Hunter Henry Hunter, b. Abt. 1740 in VA married Lucy Hart or Ruffin (still searching for verification). He died on his plantation Hunters Hall in Pinckneyville, MS 10/2/1822. We know Henry had a brother William Hunter who married Anne Norsworthy in Nansemond Co., VA by the following exerpt: 1793 -- Wilkinson Co., MS Book F, pg. 302. Before me, Manuel Gayoso de Lemos, appeared at the instance of Norsworthy Hunter, Capt. of the Militia in this Gov. Col. Henry Hunter, a gentleman of good repute, who being duly sworn, deposes that about the year 1753-54, his elder brother, William Hunter, of Nansemond Co. Vir. was married to a certain Ann Norsworthy by an orthodox minister named Webb, and remarkable for being nearsighted, and the marriage was celebrated in the house of a certain widow Norfleet, in the vicinity of the town of Suffolk. The said Norsworthy Hunter is the only issue of this union and was always held as the lawful heir of Thomas Norsworthy, dec. said to be an only surviving brother of the said Ann Norsworthy. That the said Norsworthy Hunter, at a court held for the Isle of Wight Co., Vir. 6 July 1786 upon his motion, together with William Whitfield, James Young, Francis Young, his security, received a certificate for letters of administration of the estate of Thomas Norsworthy dec. in due form of law. Signed by Francis Young, deputy clerk of court. Natchez, 22 Oct. 1794. sig. Henry Hunter before Manuel Gayoso, Stephen Minor and Joseph Vidal. Also by the following passport we know they came to Wilkinson Co., MS in 1792 "Report of Americans Arriving at Natchez. April 17, 1792. I send you the enclosed Account of two Flatboats which arrived at this Post from Holston listing the Individuals and the Cargo which they brought. Mr. Henry Hunter, a native of the United States, the Proprietor of one of them, a person of worth and special talent in all mechanical work, was Colonel in the American Service in the last War, and of whom I had previous favorable information concerning his conduct, which my dealings with him have confirmed, has taken the oath of fidelity with the intention of settling in this district with his family, which is mentioned in the enclosed account. The other Individuals who come in the other Boat are also settling in this District. According to the information which I have, they are persons of honorable conduct and masters of useful trades. All of this I repeat for your information. May the Lord keep your Lordship many years, Natchez, April 17, 1792. Manuel Gayoso de Lemos [To] Senor Baron de Carondelet." [I think Carondelet resided in New Orleans.] The following accompanied the letter: "Account of two Flatboats which arrived from Holston to this Post with Passengers and Cargo. First boat. Settlers. Proprietor - Mr. Henry Hunter, His Wife and Seven children, And fifteen Negroes which belong to him. Cargo: Farm Tools and Household Furniture for his use. Second boat. Settlers Proprietor - Robert Munson, His Wife and Four children Jesse Munson, His Wife and one son and a Slave. John Grady His wife and two children and two Negroes. Cargo: Farm Tools and a few pieces of Household furniture for thier use. Natchez, April 17, 1792." Children of Henry Hunter were: Norsworthy Hunter, William H. Hunter, Field Pulaski Hunter, Joseph Hunter, Henry Hunter, Jr., Thomas E. Hunter, Elizabeth Hunter Bell, and Mary Hunter Andrews. Presler Peter Presler, b. Abt. 1730; d. bef. 3/15/1825 in Wilkinson Co., MS. He married Jael (maiden name unknown) b. Abt. 1733; died 7/9/1839 in Wilkinson Co., MS. We know Peter and Jael came to Wilkinson Co. about 1789 by her obituary which appeared in the Woodville Republican: 7/6/1839 -- "Died at the residence of her son, Mr. Joshua Presler of this county, on the 9th, Mrs. Jael Presler, relict of Mr. Peter Presler, dec'd in the 106th year of her age. She emigrated to this country with her husband in the year 1789." Before coming to Wilkinson Co., MS we know Peter and Jael were in Missouri in 1780. Their second son Joshua was born in MO according to the 1850 Wilkinson Co., MS Census. Children of Peter and Jael Presler were: Simon Presler, Joshua Presler, Peter Presler, Jr., Lovicia Presler Coleman, Catherine Presler Marcellus, and Ann Presler O'Connor. Any information as to the parents of these emigrants to Wilkinson Co, MS would be greatly appreciated. I would love to share information with any descendants. Shawn Martin [email protected]

Nancy m William Alexander Dawson, Cornelia m Dawson and then George Washington Martin, Flora A. m J. E. Page, Thirza M. (I have been unable to locate any information about), Lucinda m Joseph P. Robertson and grandfather, Angus McDonald McGraw m Nancy Elizabeth "Betsie" Dawson and this 2nd wife was Sarah Jeffie Bowering. When granddaddy died, Sarah m Sammie Cook and when Cook died she married Dempsey Isaac Hardy. Henry also signed marriage bonds with Hiram McGraw when Hiram married Polly White September 18, 1836 in Wilkinson County, MS and then he signed a marriage bond with P. A. Dollar when P. The Ebby family moved to Wilkinson County in 1803, his offspring married Southerland, James, Callendar, Marler, Hawkins, Donald, Nelson, Phipps, Roberts, Price, Lawson, & Fisher. My GGG Grandfather, Delzel Eby, fathered many children in Wilkinson County that married into the following families: Pierce, Fisher, Price, James, Partin, & others from elsewhere. Our families' brick wall is trying to determine where John & Nancy Ebby came from before 1803, there are some possibilities, but none provable at this time. Good Luck to all of my Wilkinson County "cousins"!!! Marlon Ebey
I am searching for information on George Brown of SC in Wilkinson County from 1820 until about 1850. He married Rachel Harris March 15, 1816 in Wilkinson Co. Family records indicate they had two sons and three daughters. James F m. Susanna Netterville (two daughters married Walkers) Nathan William Wiley m. Elizabeth Shropshire-my line The names of the daughters are not listed only who they married. Using the listings of the Wilkinson County marriages we have put these possibilities together: Jamina Jane Elvira m. Jeremiah Netterville,1841; Rebecca E m. Thomas Smith 1851 Emiline m. Richard Clampett. Any help will be appreciated. Barbara [email protected]
