I have noted several public libraries in Southern California have subscriptions to the online census images. Heritage Quest is one such subscription service, and Ancestry.com is another. A few LDS centers have the Ancestry.com subscription. Genealogy.com also has some wonderful images of censuses, but I don't know whether libraries subscribe. Get on as many online public library websites in your area as possible and see what may be available in your area. With the drastic budgetary cutbacks many cities and counties in California are going to have to undergo in the next few years (the Terminator is going to terminate a lot of jobs, funds to counties, cities, etc, he says) we may not long have access to some of the amenities of our public libraries. I hope your States fare better, although all are undergoing some tough times!!! E.W.Wallace
Hey Stan, I don't know awhole lot about the Shropshires (probably just enough to give me a headache) but I would really like to trade info with you, if you would like. I'm searching alot on the Robert Shropshire line. Let me know and I'll give you dates, etc. I just went to Woodville, Wilkinson Co. today and spent about 5 hours writing down everything I could on the Shropshires but ran out of time. (they just about kicked me out) Sincerley, Brenda McCurley White
I've wondered that myself. I went to this cemetery a while back and took some photos http://www.baggettowens.com/cemeteries/shropshire/ I have a "hunch" this W Owens is connected to James Jackson Owens somehow but like I said . Its just a hunch. I think I've seen a census some where that had two brothers named James and Washington. It suprised me too when i saw the Owens there. My ties to the Shropshires go back to Lorenzo Dow White marrying Amanda Caroline Shropshire which is at least one generation BEFORE my white and owens hooked up. I wish I had more time tonight to look more up but have been in Jackson all week for training and have to go back in the morning. Maybe I can do some more research this weekend on this subject. Mike, I HONESTLY don't know. But are you talking about the Shropshire Cemetery that is off of Buffalo Road, on Ell Leake Road, Wilkinson Co.? IF IT'S THAT CEMETERY, I can't remember seeing that name. And, IF IT'S THAT CEMETERY-- there is a website you can go to that will tell you everyone in the cemetery. I'll be more than glad to give you the address!!! Brenda McCurley White
You asked: Can any one tell me why Washington Owens is buriednin the Shropshire Cem. Mike Owens Conjecture: He was a son-in-law or possibly a nephew. E.W.Wallace

Look at the website www.familysearch.org Look down the right hand side to find a link to a long list of LDS family history centers. Try to find one in your county or an adjoining county. These FHCs are dedicated to genealogy. Then call them up the FHC and ask when it is open, and what holidays is it observing (like Thanksgiving, etc.) Is it open on Saturday? If so, what are the hours? Then, when you have time, go in to the FHC and get acquainted with their holdings. Many LDS centers have microfiche which may be of interest to you. Some also have computers, and some have access to Ancestry.com, including the 1930 census and so on. Each FHC is different as the members of the LDS church support it and let us non-members use their facilities. Anyway, most of the time you can borrow films from the Family History Library at Salt Lake City for a limited time for a small fee, but you have to have time to read the films. Then, you want to go back to that same website and study the Family History Library Catalog (FHLC), particularly the holdings for Wilkinson Co., MS. Filmed records of Wilkinson Co. is where I have found most of the material for my families who were in Wilkinson Co. ca 1815 or so. The films for the later years probably are better indexed also. Also, with your public librarian, you want to ask about the possibility of interlibrary loan. Not all genealogical libraries lend their books, but you want to surf the net for the holding of the St. Louis County [not City] Missouri library which currently has the books of the National Genealogical Society. One does not need to be a member of NGS to borrow these books. You may find some books in Missouri (St. Louis Co.) that pertain to Wilkinson Co., such as those by O. Weise [I may have misspelled this] of theWoodville newspapers. Although the newspapers may not have been abstracted for the late dates in which you are interested. Get well acquainted with the LDS website. There are lessons, a research outline for Mississippi (and all the other US states plus for many European countries as well as some Latin American and Asian countries). Click on every link on that LDS website. You will be amazed. And, hopefully, someday after you have gotten acquainted with all the internet holds (some badly mistaken), you will be able to travel to a good genealogical library. Your State Library may even hold some genealogical books. ASK lots of questions of every librarian. Good luck in your searches. When you post a query, besides including the name, also include a date (even if it is a guess) and a PLACE. So many people neglect to do that. E.W.Wallace
Mr. Wallace, Thank you so very much for your reply. But unfortunately I do not have access to everything you listed. My word, I wished I did though!!!! Would love every minute of it. But for now, am only trying to find local people (hopefully) that can fill in some gaps with what limited research material I have. I'm just starting out but hopefully will get better. But again, thank you very, very much!!!! Sincerely, Brenda McCurley White
For a likely candidate to be the father of your Shropshire bride, try this census page--1870 census. Shropshire, Thomas Age: 52 Gender: M Race: W Birthplace: MS State: Mississippi County: WILKINSON Locale: WOODVILLE P O Series: M593 Roll: 753 Part: 1 Page: 394A Besides censuses, I find these records are quite useful for Wilkinson Co., MS research: deeds, land grants (BLM records), court records, other marriage records for siblings, in-laws. Also, if you are fortunate enough to be near a large genealogical library, try to find their online catalog and see what journals (quarterlies) there are from the Mississippi Genealogical Society and like-named societies. The Mississippi Genealogical Exchange for a time had some great articles--I found an ancestor's Bible record, with a few errors, but some great info--concerning birth dates and marriages -- and sometimes a remarriage. I found some wonderful clues in newspaper abstracts, and Wiese [check out that name on the family history library catalog] has abstracted some newspapers for Woodville, in which I found other clues. Probates are also great!!! In fact, again, check out the long list of topics for Wilkinson co., MS which on online for the Family History Library Catalog. And don't forget to look across the state line--in both the Feliciana Parishes and perhaps the adjoining MS counties. My folks didn't pay attention to the state lines, except when recording their deeds and probates. Some notarial records of both the Feliciana Parishes may have some info pertaining to your ancestors. Genealogy is where you find it--not in the obvious places, like births, marriages, and deaths. E.W.Wallace
Seeking info on Murdock T. Perry b. abt. 1847 married to MARTHA ANN Shropshire. Who are the parents of Martha Ann Shropshire?? Wilkinson County Marriage Records show Murdock T. Perry married MARTHA ANN Shropshire Dec. 10, 1872. They supposingly had a son George Wyley born Dec. 8, 1873. But I also have Murdock Perry married bef. 1873 to Mary Tabitha Shropshire (dau. of Wiley Shropshire b. 1830 and Mary McCurley b.1834) Wilkinson Co. Marriage Records show Tabitha Shropshire Perry married John S. Cobb on Jan. 15, 1878. Tabitha and John Cobb had 7 kids but the one that throws up a red flag to me is Amanda Cobb born Mar. 12, 1874. I doubled checked her birthdate. In the 1930 Census she was age 56 (which would verify 1874 again) living with John S. Cobb, age 79 in Gloster, MS If Tabitha had been married to Murdock that would mean she had a son George Wyley with Murdock in Dec., 1873 and then just 3 months later had daughter Amanda with John Cobb But, on the 1880 Census it shows George Wyley living with John Cobb and Tabitha and lists George as a stepson. George could very well be his stepson. But what Perry was Tabitha really married to????? On Tabitha's tombstone in lists her name as Tabitha A., (not Mary Tabitha) wife of J.S. Cobb born Aug. 30, 1855 and died Jan. 21, 1891. She is buried in Old Perrytown Cemetery, Turkey Creek Road, Wilkinson Co. ANY HELP on the above would be VERY APPRECIATED!!!!!! Brenda McCurley White

For all those I sent a copy of my Shropshire file, and all those who bought copies of my Jonathan Day Descendants book, I have a mistake on page 113 of the book. Not sure of the page of the file. I have Margaret Ellen McCurley as the daughter of Leroy McCurley. This is incorrect. Margaret Ellen McCurley was the sister of Leroy and they where the children of Joseph McCurley and Jane [surname unknown]. Thanks to Brenda McCurley White for pointing out this mistake. I do appreciate folks who take the time to tell me I made a mistake. Getting it right is my top priority. Virginia

I am sending, in a different message, the first 25 pages of the 1836 Wilkinson county probate records. I have tried my best but can not guarantee there are not a few mistakes. This book is going to be slow going as the print is blurred and bleeding through. For that reason, I have decided to send the pages as I finish them.
