Thanks for all the hard work. It is greatly appreciated. Mary in Tx.
The wills that I am coping were written in the early 1830's but where not copied into this book until after 1880, when there was a ruling to have the originals copied into a book. The originals where destroyed. What you are reading is my interterpertion of the 1880's clerk's interpretation of the originals. I know he copied at least one name wrong, Naami when it should be Naomi, but I am extracting, to the best of my ability, what is contained in Will book 1. If the names in this book different slightly form what you know to be the correct name, realize that it has passed through at least two interpretations before it reached you. The Book is on Microfilm and can be rented through an FHC. Personally, when I find a record that has been extracted on my lines, I want to check it myself, rather than take someone else's interpretation. I am not copying these word for word. I am trying to include everything I think would be important. The names and relationships mentioned. Descriptions of property, witnesses and dates. They are very wordy and I have chosen to leave out the legal phrases. They all ask their debts be paid and their bodies buried. I didn't think it necessary to include that. If you want copies of these wills, check with your FHC to see if they have a film copier, rent the film and copy it yourself. The film cost 3.25 plus small fee to cover stamp or phone call to notify you it is in. You can also write or call the court house but I don't know if they look up the data and make copies. I know at one time they where not. To find what documents, if any, are available for your surnames, order the indexes which are also on microfilm. If you are not sure of the time period, ordering the index is always a wise first step. Also be aware, when checking deeds, that some of the earlier grants given back in the 1820 and 1830 as 'land west of Pearl River' was not copied into the Wilkinson county deed books until many years later. I found a Thomas Ashley deed in the 1860 which I thought was for my ancestors son or grandson. Only by checking the original did I find the deed was granted in the 1830 to my 4rd great grandfather. When you are researching these records you have to read EVERYTHING to know what you are getting, especially if you family, like mine, used the same names over and over. Virginia
Do you have any CHAMBERS or MCNAMARS? Thanks so much. Mary
not yet anyway, I am still copying. I have only got about 50 pages copied and there are hundreds. Virginia, I am interested in any Kaigler, Ferguson, Glass, Ogden information you might come across. Thank you for all the work you do for us....someday I hope to find my elussive link. Anneliese Ogden Kruger [email protected]
I see you have Daniel or David? Could his name have been David and I misread? This old handwriting does leave much to be desired. Will check it when I get back to the FHC and let you know if it needs to be changed. My Negor girl Catherine and her child Dulcina, I wish to remain hired to James Higgins or someother good man for two years longer. If I should not return by that time, I wish them both to be set free for life and all the money that would be coming to me for their hire, given to Catharine and all the maney I leave in thehands of John I. Collins, which he does not use in paying my debts, I wish to be paid over to Catherine. witnesses: D. STEWART, I. HIGGINS file 29 Nov 1831
