I would appreciate help from anyone on the Washington County list on my 2ggf, Thomas F. Leggett. His Confederate Civil War service record indicates he was a private with the 37th Alabama Infantry Regiment and was captured at Holly Springs, Miss. He was sent to a prisoner of war camp in Cairo, Illinois. The next listing is that he "appears on a list of sick C.S.A. who were put off on the banks of the Miss. River, from the steamer Minnehaha, at Greenville, Miss. Dec. 31, 1862, entirely destitute of rations, bedding, etc." This information is on a printed card from the NARA. The notation on the card is that he died the next day, Jan 1st., from smallpox. My interpretation of this is that the sick CSA prisoners were put on the steamer, transported down the Mississippi River, and left on the banks of the river on the hope that they would be found and cared for by friendly Confederates. The fact that this information appears on a printed card from the National Archives suggests that the incident involving the steamer Minnehaha was well known, but I haven't been able to find any other information about this incident. Is anyone on the list familiar with this incident? Also, I'm sure it is a long shot, but is there any chance that there might be a Confederate grave in Greenville with this name on it? Thanks, Jeff Armstrong
