It answers many of my questions and I am grateful. I am a little confused, however, about where exactly William fits in. I have William's mother as being named Thelma. Perhaps I have something mixed up, and would be really interested in any insight you might have on this one. According to the information I have, the family goes as follows: Francis Bettis Griffin ( b 1790 and the one who must have established The Refuge Plantation 1831) married Leonora Scarlett and had 4 children -- Thomas, Isabella, Laura & John Bettis Griffin. their youngest son, "Judge" John Bettis Griffin ( b 15-Sep-1826, the Inventor & Cotton breeder who died in Miss Carrie Stern's house) married Sarah Lane Marshall and had 9 children: Francis Bettis, John Lane, Leonora Scarlett, Mary lane, Laura, Janet, Helen Knight, Donald Carr, & Gerald Gordon (b 27 Dec 1870 and is my great grandfather). Their eldest son, Francis Bettis Griffin (b 7 Feb 1853) married unknown Champion and had 3 children: Mary Lane, Catherine & John Bettis Griffin. Their youngest son, John Bettis Griffin married Thelma(?) and had 4 children: John Lane, Francis, Carr Lane & William. Their youngest son, William married Elenora Corrina Urquhart and had William N, George U, John Scarlett & Sarah Lane. The family still attends the Episcopal Church.
