She and her sister, Sadie U. Ferguson, were reared at Eleana Plantation near Wilczinski [Metcalfe],Mississippi. William Griffin's grandfather, Francis, came to the Vicksburg area from South Carolina. He established Refuge Plantation on the Mississippi River several miles south of Greenville in 1831. His son, John, the father of William, was born on Refuge. "Judge" John Griffin was an inventor and cotton breeder. He died at the home of Miss Carrie Stern. William's mother, Sarah Lane, was a native of Kentucky. William, born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1856, spent his boyhood at Refuge. He studied law and served as Greenville's city attorney beginning in 1895. The children of E. C and William Griffen were William N. Griffin, George Urquhart Griffin [1898 - 19--], John Scarlett Griffin [1896 - 1896], and Sarah Lane Griff! in. Julia Sheldon Griffin [1903-1953] was the daughter of George U. Griffin and Rose Sheldon. The family attended the Episcopal Church
