I have a picture if you would like me to send it. from Mississippi By Rowland page 288 --picture of william Griffin William Griffin, lawyer and planter of Greenville, is a descendant of one of the old fioner families of Mississippi. It answers many of my questions and I am grateful. I am a little confused, however, about where exactly William fits in. I have William's mother as being named Thelma. Perhaps I have something mixed up, and would be really interested in any insight you might have on this one. According to the information I have, the family goes as follows: Francis Bettis Griffin ( b 1790 and the one who must have established The Refuge Plantation 1831) married Leonora Scarlett and had 4 children -- Thomas, Isabella, Laura & John Bettis Griffin. their youngest son, "Judge" John Bettis Griffin ( b 15-Sep-1826, the Inventor & Cotton breeder who died in Miss Carrie Stern's house) married Sarah Lane Marshall and had 9 children: Francis Bettis, John Lane, Leonora Scarlett, Mary lane, Laura, Janet, Helen Knight, Donald Carr, & Gerald Gordon (b 27 Dec 1870 and is my great grandfather). Their eldest son, Francis Bettis Griffin (b 7 Feb 1853) married unknown Champion and had 3 children: Mary Lane, Catherine & John Bettis Griffin. Their youngest son, John Bettis Griffin married Thelma(?) and had 4 children: John Lane, Francis, Carr Lane & William. Their youngest son, William married Elenora Corrina Urquhart and had William N, George U, John Scarlett & Sarah Lane. The family still attends the Episcopal Church.

That particular stone was removed several years ago by someone who thought they were protecting it. when they realized that the cemetery will not be disturbed it was returned to the site. I don't know that it actually marks the grave site any longer.

    1. [MSWASHIN] Note about spam from List Admin
    2. To all list subscribers: I have reported the spam that hit this list to Rootsweb. I have unsubbed the addy that sent it and put it on the reject list. There is no need for everyone on the list to report this to Rootsweb, or to the list. Our list is not the only one that got hit with this bit of filth. The Listowners-L mailing list is buzzing. Several other lists have been hit by different addresses. Rest easy, cause I have set this list, along with the others that I take care of, to send all new subscribers to me. I will manually subscribe new list members to prevent this from happening again. God bless, Nina List Admin

    1. [MSWASHIN] Update from List Admin
    2. Happy Holidays to all list members, I have not posted to the list much since I became list admin. This is a short note to let you know that we have 45 members subbed to the MSWASHIN-L list and 16 members subbed to the MSWASHIN-D list. Most of the posts to the list are message board posts. Remember to reply to the actual message board if you want or have any information. You are all a great bunch of people and I want to wish you a safe and happy holiday season. I would like to remind you that many people will be getting computers for Christmas, which means that we will be seeing a number of newbies online. We have all been there, done that, so patience will have to take a front seat for a while. Let's show the newbies that we are a helpful, kind, caring, and understanding group. They will not be newbies for long and we want to train them right. So from my heart and home to yours, happy holidays and may the new year be the best one yet. Remember that I am here, MSWASHIN-admin@rootsweb.com, if you have any problems, questions, or off-topic subjects. God bless, Nina List Admin

    2. Mark Murphy
    3. I wonder if you would be talking to me? I see you have James Collins and Murphy interests as well. Have we communicated before? My Wm B. Murphey's ancesters moved with the Collins' and others from 1600's Virginia, into Bute/Franklin Co. NC and over to Maury/Marshall Co. TN. Wm.'s brother Emedicus (aka possibly "Doctor") went in partnership on a plantation in Washington/Issaquena Co. MS with Council Rogers Bass, also of NC. Would like to know if you have these same interests. Emedicus died about 1865, believed shot by the yankees at his home.
