Curlee, Sr., 85, of Rienzi, died Tuesday at Methodist Hospital in Memphis after a brief illness. Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Rienzi Baptist Church with Rev. Clarence Palmer, Rev. Joe Holcomb and Rev. Clifford Rinehart officiating. Burial will be in Rienzi Cemetery with McPeters Mortuary in charge of arrangements. Mr. Curlee served as a rural mail carrier for several years before he became the Post Master at Rienzi. In 1910 he established a general store and for a number of years operated the post office in his store. A colorful political figure in Alcorn County, he served as Chairman of the Democratic Committee and served on the staff of several Mississippi governors. For eleven years, he served on the staff of Sen. James O. Eastland. A 50-year Mason, Mr. Curlee was a charter member of the local Masonic Lodge, and was very active in the Rienzi Baptist Church, serving as the Adult Men's Sunday School Class teacher for many years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lela Curlee and a son E. Joseph Curlee, of Rienzi; 3 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be John M. Curlee, John M. Curlee, III, Michael Curlee, Frank Curlee, Dr. Franklin Adams and Howard McCarley. Honorary: Senator James O. Eastland, Dr. Frank Davis, Charles Dick, Frank Hudson, Tim Carter, John Lorick, Ward Ray, J.B. Calvery, Clifton Taylor, Fred Benjamin and Sen. Theodore Smith. (NOT MY LINES.)
