    3. Dean, Prof. H. A. Published in: The Vidette Date of Publication: May 23, 1912 Prof. H. A. Dean Dead Editor Vidette: Just in receipt of a telegram conveying the news of the death of Prof. H. A. Dean, which occurred this morning, May 20. He died in Uvalde, Texas, where he has made his home the past three years but his thoughts and heart remained in this section of the country where his great efforts in his cherished field of endeavor and the best years of his life had been spent. Many of the men who are truly great, many who have been real blessings to the age in which they lived, have been men whose worth could be fully appreciated only when years have passed and fine results of their labors have been proven. Such a man was H. A. Dean. First of all he was a man – a great big man, large of heart, large of purpose, large in love in every relation in life. Prof. Dean’s most distinguished characteristic in life was a chivalric sense of honor. Far removed from any suggestion of the quixotic, he was of that high minded type with punctilious regard for the right and strict conformity to duty that marks the truly knightly character. The example of his life is one that may well be cited for emulation – a man whose integrity all trusted and whose high character made him a model for the young. He had a warm place in the hearts and in the esteem of the thousands of young people throughout the Southern states and his memory will be long and lovingly preserved in those traditions which sire hands down to son, and his death will cause universal sorrow. As a teacher, the South has not produced a greater one. He was pre-eminent. Like Saul of Tarsus he had a vision; a vision of the needs of the educational system. The South is not only reaping the rewards of Prof. Dean’s labor in this respect, but in every line of endeavor resulting from pupils to whom were imparted a portion, at least, of his great characteristics. We frequently speak of the New South. Could we have a few men such as H. A. Dean, we would not only have a New South but a New Nation. Truly good, truly great, his work shall live after him, and his memory shall grow brighter and brighter with time in the hearts of his devoted followers.
