George, Yes, all the variant spellings are worth considering. I have two known ancestors named William, neither of whom quite fit the one you mention. Mine are WILLIAM S. McCULLOUGH (1843?, Wooster OH; d. 26 Dec 1915, Hot Springs AR) He was my great grandfather. His youngest son was also named William (b. after 1880; d. 27 Sep 1918, Conway AR). As far as I can determine, William S. was the first of my line to go to the South. He was stationed at DeValls Bluff during the Civil War as a Captain in the Union forces. He returned there after the war to supervise the Freedmens Bureau and then settled in Brinkley where he was a farmer, attorney, hotel owner and postmaster. The eldest of his four sons, Roy, was an attorney in Birmingham AL. His son, Jack, my grandfather, was a teacher and school administrator in Arkansas and Colorado. I know almost nothing about the two youngest sons, Hunter and William, Jr. Thanks again for you help. Jack
