My guess is that, unless census records are wrong, Daniel was married before and his wife died. Otherwise, Mahala would have been about 11-12 when she conceived. Melvina may be a child by the first wife, too. Anybody know? Perry was in Tishomingo Co. by Apr. 13, 1852. On Jan. 12, 1854, he married Betsy Hanks, who was born in SC in 1833. The Kay book shows 4 children: Lida, Emma Elizabeth, Martha H., and John W. Authors of the book believe Perry may have died in the Civil War, possibly in Illinois. When the Kays and Hanks lived in Anderson *(SC), Perry's family lived about 5 houses away from Betsy's family. A whole group of Perry's family members apparently moved to Tishomingo about the same time. They married Mannings, Lovelaces(Loveless), Footes, Gables, etc. Perry Kay was a half-brother to James Chester, Christopher, and Francis Marion Kay who married into the Loveless & Manning families.
