Karen I will take what ever you can give me on this family and in-laws. As it stands right now I do not even know some of the surnames that might have traveled with this family to Arkansas. And I know that families often traveled together. Something brought James to Arkansas and possibly he was following one of his older children here. I thought that the family came to Arkansas through Pope county because my gr grandfather Z.T. Pettit (that married Mary Ann Ritter) and his first wife Sarah were on the census there in 1880 and the marriage record for Z.T. and Mary Ann was issued out of Pope County. But James is on the Van Buren County census in 1860 & 1870. Shortly after ZT & Mary were married there was a land patent issued to a John Ritter (possibly Mary Ann's older brother and one of James' older children) for land in Pope County but I do not find the Ritter's on any of the census for Pope County. I'd like to know if John were married and possibly who he might have married. I have sent for forms to try to order some of the land patents from the Bureau of Land Managment but haven't recieved them yet. By 1900 the my gr grandfather was on a census in Van Buren with Mary Ann. The 1890 census I believe is the one that is lost because of fire & flood damage & that is really hurting the research on this family. Lyllye: My Martin family moved from Tishomingo County MS to Van Buren County AR between 1850 and 1860. I couldn't find out why. Later on, they moved (right in the middle of the war) to Illinois.
