COLEMAN HELTON FAMILY By Danny Orville Helton Following the formation of Tishomingo County in 1836 from the Chickasaw Nation, the 1837 Census of Tishomingo lists 95 names in the new county. Three Heltons were listed: 1. Joshua S. Helton with three males and one female, unnamed. 2. Peter Helton with one male and three females, unnamed. 3. Nancy Helton with two females, unnamed, living adjacent to Peter Helton. Peter lived just to the east of Sardis Church. Family Records indicate that John Helton and Nancy, a Cherokee Indian woman, were the parents of Peter. They moved from East Tennessee to Mississippi. Previous to that, John lived in South Carolina. The 1840 Census for the City of Iuka shows James Helton, head of a household and a farmer, with three in his household: One male over 15 and under 20; one male over 40 and under 50; one female over 40 and under 50. The book "History of Old Tishomin go County" states that James Helton was part of 2nd Mississippi Regiment, Company A during the civil war. It also states that J. S. Helton was a Constable of Iuka during the Civil War. The Helton family is also mentioned in the county records of 1839. One of the first marriages to take place in Tishomingo County was Peter Helton to Thursey McCoy, a Cherokee Indian, on December 27, 1841. Fleming McCoy was Thursey's father, and she inherited land from him in Tishomingo County. The 1850 Census of Tishomingo County lists two households of Heltons: 1. Peter, age 28, a farmer from Tennessee; Thursey, age 25 from TN; Jane, age 7, born in MS; James, 5, born in MS; William, 3, born in MS; and Nancy, 1, born in MS 2. James, age 26, a farmer from Tennessee; Mary, age 27, from AL; William, age 7, born in MS; James (Babe), 5, born in MS; Ann, age 3, born in MS; and Nancy, 1, born in MS. It seems reasonable that Peter and James were brothers considering the similarity in ages, the fact that both were farmers from Tennessee living in the same area, and that three of their children had the same names. Family records show that Peter was the father of two additional sons: Marion who moved to Florida and about whom there is no other information, and Henry (Bud), born November 7, 1852, and died February 18, 1923. Peter, Henry, and several other Heltons are buried in the Helton Cemetery about two miles east of Sardis Church. The cemetery is beside the road on land owned by the Parsons Family. Unfortunately, the cemetery is currently not marked, has few grave markers, and is unkept. Most of the more than 100 field stone grave markers have been stolen. Henry Helton married Loucinda Caroline Parsons who was born June 20, 1857, and died January 18, 1944. Their family is presented in the Henry family portrait. One can estimate the date of the picture knowing that Coleman, right side second row, was born 21 Sept., 1894. A measure of the respect that Henry had in the community can still be seen by the sea shells placed on his grave. This is an Indian custom reserved for people of significance. Coleman Helton married Maudie Louise Lambert, born 19 March 1905, died 31 March 1967. Coleman served in the army and ran a general store at Holcut for most of his life. I once saw a woman show respect to Maudie Helton by giving her several pounds of peanuts which she had dug and separated herself such that the entire bag had only hulls with four or five peanuts per hull. Coleman and Maudie's children were: Orville, born 25 Dec. 1922; Opal Lorene, born 26 Nov. 1924, died 19 Jun. 1977; Edna Earl, born 9 Jul. 1926; Ernestine, born 31 Oct. 1928; James Kermit, born 27 Jun. 1934; Aubrey Wayne, born 19 Aug. 1943. Orville Helton married Yvlette Green and had one son, Danny Orville Helton. Orville and Yvlette served as educators in schools in Holcut, New Site, Belmont, and Louisville, Ky. Danny O. Helton married Frances Cole and had one son, Raymond Helton.
