    3. Janice, The best thing I have found is a non-chemical white foam and a squeegee. Spray the foam on and around the lettering, and then use the squeegee to wipe away the excess. This will usually leave enough white foam in the letters to be able to read them. For foam you may have to use a very mild shaving lather. Carry water to rinse away any leavings. It is important to NOT clean the stone in most cases, because of the possibility of damage. Before cleaning, you should get an expert opinion. By-the-way, damage you do may not be apparent next year or the next, but can accelerate the normal aging process.
