The rubbing is one way, and they also make rubbing chalks and crayons for purchase. The best method I have found that works best is to first clean the heastone and this does not damage the stones in any way. You will need to go to a local craft store or your local florist and purchase a large piece of flat foam (NOT OASIS) BUT DRY, HARD FOAM that is used to insert flower arrangements in. The foam comes in white and green colors. Simply cut the foam into small pieces (about the size of a chalkboard eraser) then rub vigourously over the headstone that is hard to read and this will clean and brighten it up without damaging the stones. This will make taking the rubbing easier or make the stone easier to photograph. I have used this technique for many years and it works wonderfully. Jim Killough
