My husbands Hall's left Arkansas for Illinois, as well, during the beginning of the civil war. They spent from the early 1800's to as late as 1910 in courts from Tenn to Ok proving that they were Portugese and not black (so that they could get their children in white schools). There was some 'new law' or 'law suddenly enforced' by sheriffs regarding free blacks in Arkansas that made them decide to leave Ark for Illinois. I googled 'Turnbo Manuscripts' and found stories online (ark history). There is a search box that you can search a surname or place. I found 10 articles that spoke directly about my Hall's and loved reading it. Well I do know something about Arkansas being Confederate. It was a Confederate State but I also know that there were not necessarily sympathizers but folks that wanted to straddle the fence so to say. There was a group supposedly formed in the Van Buren, Arkansas area & it took in several counties but they were called the Arkansas Peace Society. They were a secret society and even had an oath. One of them approached a fella about joining and the group was reported to the authorities. And it went all the way to the governor's office. And the law enforcement at the time was order to round up all the fella's involved...and they were all taken to Little Rock for a hearing. There are some websites about it and even some of the names that were involved can be found there. I know one was a William Brown and I have Brown's in my family and I know that I can't find my Brown family from 1870 to about 1890 but they were in that area in 1860 & 1900. But I'm not sure if those dates match that period. Jan, That would be so great' in the meantime, I will see if I can find the man that sent me the original information on John L. Hodge. I just feel that maybe Sarah might have been a sister to James Pinkney Hodge. They were near the same age, came from the same state (North Carolina) about the same time, stayed near each other in Colbert and Franklin Counties of Alabama and then they were near Sarah's kids in Tishomingo County. Just too many coincidences. I can corroborate that several northeast Mississippi families (Tishomingo, Alcorn, and Prentiss counties) moved to Hill County, TX. Some of my Sims, Harts and Harlins made that move, although not until the late 1890s. Family stories say that they took the train from Burnsville/Iuka and got off in Hillsboro, Hill County, TX. The lure was supposedly good, cheap land to raise cotton as a cash crop. The cemetery Brenda is referring to below may be New Woodbury Cemetery in Hillsboro. If anyone has connections to the Sims, Hart, and Harlin/Harlan/Harland families from northeastern Mississippi, I'd like to compare notes with you. Thanks. Brenda: Funeral home records do provide some helpful information, and Cutshall & Deaton Funeral Homes have been in business in Iuka and Belmont since I was a tot (won't say how many years ago that was, either!). Do you know if those funeral homes have computerized their old archived records? It would be so good to have that info. Thanks for providing this link to Cutshall's site.
