    3. Yes I thought it was very interesting...and to be honest was quite surprized that these men were not hung for treason. I don't think anything was done any more than the hearing at from what I understand they all pretty much said they were willing to fight. It is my understanding that this covered several counties. This is one of the links to a site that tells about some of it... http://gen.texsteve.com/aps1861.htm Note that the names that they still have a record of are predominately born in Tennessee. And that it says they were neither for or against either side....their primary concern was their home and defending it...there intent was to take neither side...but they were ultimately in the end forced to fight for the confederacy. It moves me to read about these men....for I think they were not afraid to fight and did in the end....but that they were intent on defending their homes...& I can just hear them defending themselves in this hearing...I'd like to find more on this...I work in Little Rock and go to the historical archives here on my lunch some time....am thinking I may need to look into it more...am wondering if there may be some actual transcripts of the hearing. Also the list of left is less that 300 but they estimated a following of about 1700 men. This site gives a list of names of men that were supposed to be members... http://www.couchgenweb.com/civilwar/peacelst.htm Date: Thu, 24 May 2007 09:39:53 -0500 From: "Frank Martin" <fmartin@zeecon.com> Subject: Re: [MSTISHOM] Ritter/Peal To: <mstishom@rootsweb.com> Message-ID: <002101c79e11$644b0820$6401a8c0@martin> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Wona: This is very interesting. Do you know if the group (Arkansas Peace Society) was formed in the area of the city of Van Buren, or was it in Van Buren County? Frank ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wona Chennault" <lyllye1@yahoo.com> To: <MSTISHOM@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 23, 2007 6:18 PM Subject: [MSTISHOM] Ritter/Peal Well I do know something about Arkansas being Confederate. It was a Confederate State but I also know that there were not necessarily sympathizers but folks that wanted to straddle the fence so to say. There was a group supposedly formed in the Van Buren, Arkansas area & it took in several counties but they were called the Arkansas Peace Society. They were a secret society and even had an oath. One of them approached a fella about joining and the group was reported to the authorities. And it went all the way to the governor's office. And the law enforcement at the time was order to round up all the fella's involved...and they were all taken to for a hearing. There are some websites about it and even some of the names that were involved can be found there. I know one was a William Brown and I have Brown's in my family and I know that I can't find my Brown family from 1870 to about 1890 but they were in that area in 1860 & 1900. But I'm not sure if those dates match that period. The family story goes that they went by wagon train; they settled Peeltown in Henderson (now Kaufman) County, TX. They were looking for "elbow room" and a good place to farm. Now, as to your ancestors leaving Arkansas in the middle of the Civil War -- could they have been Union sympathizers? I don't know much about Arkansas, but I'm assuming it was a Confederate state. 3. My information has come for various sources including a Young descendant who sent me information via email so I don't have concrete proof. As for going to Arkansas, yes, I believe some of them did. I have a Ruth Ann Young married to John Lynch Bell in Clark County, AR. I think some of the Bell's married into the Weir and Pennington families. They are also in Arkansas. Some of the Sewell's who connect with the Young's also ended up in Arkansas. I have visited numerous cemeteries in Arkansas and taken photos of the tombstones. 3. Margaret: Thanks for your reply; If you have a copy of the The Tishomingo County, MS History and Families book, on page 430. There is a Murphree/Murphy family history submitted by Cecil Lamar Summers and Gladys Kennedy Summers. If you do not have the book, send me a email to lisacs231@yahoo.com and I will sent you all the information in the article. The book, it self is out of print. I believe But I am almost postive, it is on disc and for sale at mstishom In the article, The Murphree/murphy family and descendants seems to have lived in the area from the Franklin/Marion County, AL line to Iuka. I do not see any names to match the ones in your email. But it is the same general area your Murphrees was in. One family, Hyram Marion Murphree and wife Susan Waldrep is buried in the Chastain Grave yard in the northeast part of Itawamba County. Wadkins and Watkins is different spellings of the same surname.. The Cagles and Halls came to Tish County from Itawamba County, MS /franklin county. Al The Allen Nelson Parsons family is documented back to Cobb County, GA. She many not be related to yours , but there is a Delphia Ann Davis, who was JG Boothe's second wife. Her parents was Enos and Sarah Powell Davis. It is believed, but not documented, Sarah Powell [Davis] and Martha Jane Powell were sisters. Martha Jane Powell was JG Boothe's first wife. Enos Davis [circa 1800] is believed to be born in GA, but not documented Thanks for the reply because what I cannot use,, I may be able to pas it on to some one else who needs it. 3. Jean, which were your Waldrups? I have in my database an M Washington Waldrop (b 30 Sep 1862, d 35 Dec 1950), m in Dec 1867 Lula Lindsey (b 28 Dec 1869 Claiborne, Jasper Co. MS, d 14 Oct 1937 Gadsden AL). Their children were William Lindsey Waldrup (m Minnie Nichols) and Ray Waldrup (m Clara Covington) Lula's parents were from Newbury Dist. SC and Rochy Mount, Nash Co. NC. I also have Waldrops in the Carolinas and Alabama, who were related to my Lindseys. Also, Waldrips in Mississippi, who were related (by marriage) to my Turnages. Thomas Benton Waldrip m Nancy Hurley Wooten, Thomas Benton Waldrip Jr. m Jessie Quinona Turnage, a sister of my grandmother Emma Clifton Turnage. Their children were Lora Oclis Waldrip (m Edward Harris, then George Samuel Taylor), Ralph Turnage Waldrip (m Edith Corine Letson), Emma Hurley Waldrip (m Edward Trimm) and Thomas Benton Waldrip (m Hazel Lucile Clark). I suspect that Waldrup, Waldrop and Waldrip are all really the same name, that just got spelled different ways. Probably each of these families spelled it, or had a recorder spell it, in more than one way over time. Margaret Lindsey Smith

    3. I just found out this week that some of the Cole descendants are buried in Old Bethel Cemetery. I was having a conversation with a lady I work with that grew up in the Moores Mill area. We have known each other of and on I guess you would say since college. During our conversation, we found out we are cousins!!! We got really excited about it. I am kin to the Bennett's buried out in that cemetery. A church record could confirm that my ancestor, Issac M Bennett and his father, Frances M Bennett, are buried there. The church building there now is new so I'm wondering if they have the old records from the 1870's. Anyone know if they do? Who would I need to contact? Thanks! Jon P.S. 3. I think that they must be closely related, I have looked for some Young genealogies, but have been able to find any. If you have Joshua and so do I, its got to be there somewhere. Where did you find the Youngs farther back Patti? I also have some documents that Vicki Roach had researched for me, in Tishomingo, which could be yours too, if there is something in particular you are looking for. I can let you know what I have. Maybe some of the other researchers out there can help us out, on some place to look. Did any of yours go to Arkansas? 3. The Wiliam Clement McKenny family, who left Tish County headed to Texas in late 1852-early 1853 must have been one of the first families to leave. Their story is on page 416 of the Tish County History and Families book. One of their daughters Mary Eliczabeth [lizzy] b: 1833 married Alexander Murphy b: 1825 on the way to Texas. My question is, who was Alexander's parents, he is in the right age range to be a brother to James Murphy [1816], who married Catherine Farris. 3. Brenda-please add my Ward information to the surname page. Thanks. Alonzo WARD, b. 1835-45, in 1870 Tishomingo census w/wife Margaret, & 1880 Tishomingo census w/wife Isabella (Provines/Province). In 1850 Lownes Co. census there's an Alonzo M. Ward, age 7, in household with father Charles and mother, Catherine. Not sure if this is the same Alonzo, but I suspect it is. Alonzo and Isabella had (at least) the following children: Allie (female), Charlie and Arthur Jordan Ward. Would love to exchange information if this is your line, and welcome all responses.

    3. Wona: This is very interesting. And the law enforcement at the time was order to round up all the fella's involved...and they were all taken to Little Rock for a hearing.
