E.W. Carmack served in many public capacities in Old Tishomingo County. I'm not related but can tell from years of research he was highly thought of and must have had money since he commonly put up bond money for people. I'm a Shook descendant. C.C. (Christopher Columbus) Shook served in the Civil War in Company H. He was the first mayor of Belmont, a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church and is buried in Joel Cemetery. J.H. may be Henry Shook who is on the CSA rosters as well. I have some Vaughan info in my computer. Descendants of James T. Vaughan Generation No. 1 1. JAMES T.1 VAUGHAN died 1862. He married GABRIELLA HYNEMAN October 11, 1860 in Old Tishomingo Co., MS, daughter of DAVID HYNEMAN and REBECCA DOUGLAS. Notes for JAMES T. VAUGHAN: Served as a first Lieutenant in the Corinth Rifles and was killed in the battle in 1862. 1860 Old Tish. Co., MS census has a James Vaughn age 27, male, day laborer born GA living alone. They would not have married until after the 1860 census was taken, so this is possibly him. More About GABRIELLA HYNEMAN: Burial: 1913, City Cem., Corinth, MS Child of JAMES VAUGHAN and GABRIELLA HYNEMAN is: i. CLAUDIA2 VAUGHN. Descendants of Charlie Vaughn Generation No. 1 1. Chadwick, James Published in: The Vidette Date of Publication: April 04, 1912 Death of James Chadwick From Paragould, Ark. we gather the following facts concerning the death of James Chadwick, who died there a few weeks ago. Mr. Chadwick formerly lived south of Dennis, near old Hillside post office, in this county. James Chadwick, an aged farmer whose home is near his farm near Jacksons Commissary, 13 miles west of Paragould, died suddenly about midnight Monday night, at the home of his nephew, E. P. Gathings, on South Sixth St. in this city. Mr. Chadwick had come to Paragould to close a land deal in which he was to dispose of one of his farms. He went to the home of Mr. Gathings, whose wife is a niece of Mr. Chadwick, to spend the night. Shortly after he retired he suffered a severe bilious attack, to which he had been subject for years. About 10 oclock he felt better and had Mr. Gathings go to bed and leave him. The latter heard him groan several times after he left the room. Next morning when Mr. Gathings went to his room he was found dead. Mr. Chadwick came here 5 years ago from Mississippi. He was a man of some means, owning a good farm. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. J. B. Morrow. He was buried at Mt. Zion cemetery. --------------------------------- Take the Internet to Go: Yahoo!Go puts the Internet in your pocket: mail, news, photos & more.

Brenda: I recently had a melt-down on my memory board and in sending the photos from the album, may have to include several more recent pix from the Grayson CO, TX extended family. I'm headed out to the office to pick up my notes which will ID the photos. I'll be happy to make a CD for the society to use as needed. My Vaughan cousins out here, Larry Keith and Donna Hunt have visited the Tish area and have had some earlier contact with family back there. I hope to also one day soon. I am researching the BERRYMAN family. My great grandfather was John M. Berryman, born about 1827 in Tennessee (according to census records). He had a wife named Ann(e) in the 1850 census then later a wife named Emma. The son of John and Ann was my grandfather, Hiram Louis BERRYMAN who married Sahara Jane "Sallie" Fryar. I can place the family in Tippah and Alcorn counties. I know that there are BERRYMAN families in Tishomingo County as well as neighboring counties in Tennessee and Alabama. I know in my heart that they are all related. The problem that we are all so familiar with is that I can not find the link that puts them together. The earliest record I can find for John M. BERRYMAN is the 1850 Tippah County Federal Census. I would very much like to compare notes with anyone who has any BERRYMAN family information, or even an idea. Other closely related families include: BALLARD, BULLARD, CRUM, FRYAR, JONES, MINCEY, WILBANKS. Help!! Jan Berryman
My researched surnames for Tishomingo and surrounding counties are: Ratliff 1880 til present, came from Jefferson Co Alabama John Thomas Hill and family c 1870 Cincinnatti Davis's children c 1900 Sappintons, Deans, Medleys. Surratts, Parrishs married Ratliffs Alphia Pearl Dean m Carl Henderson and I cannot find ANYthing on them! My dream would be to find the burial site of Mary Perry Overton Ratliff and her husband James Warren Ratliff! Brenda and all of the other volunters, thank you so much for what you have taken on. As you know, several weeks ago we had a very active discussion going on the list for a couple of weeks or so and then it slowed down. One of the reasons that it slowed was that several of your messages (as well as some of mine) "bounced" or was "being reviewed by the administrator". This was what prompted me to investigate - and therefore, now I am the new administrator. For those of you who may not know me, I am Brenda Phifer Whitfield, a native and lifelong resident of Tishomingo County. I began researching some 35+ years ago and have been active since. While I have a personal library on our county folk and am willing to share, the purpose of this list is not me - it is for all of us to share with each other. Please take the time to once again email the list with specific surnames and date ranges; I have kept several as well as our Tishomingo County Archives have, but would like to have access to all, in order to share and help to our fullest extent. Please feel free to ask questions; send a message to this list or email me personally at jbwhitifeld@e1w.com<mailto:jbwhitifeld@e1w.com> if you need. John W MILLER, b. c1824 AL; married 18/24 Aug 1849 in Tishomingo Co, to Nancy MOORE b. 12 Mar 1832 AL. They are on 1850 Tishomingo Co census. I am trying to make a connection to my 2nd great grandfather, William T MILLER b. 8 Jan 1830 AL. William T is with his parents Joseph L & Jane T (mnu) MILLER on 1850 Tishomingo Co. John W and William T are both on 1860 census in Relphe's Bluff,Clear Creek twp,Drew Co,AR. I suspect William T and John W are brothers or cousins. Any info on any of these MILLERs would be greatly appreciated. Peggy
Richard, I would love to see the pictures and information online. James T. Vaughn's grandson marries into my Deaton line; however, I have an interest in most of those surnames you mentioned. I am also related to the Shook's that you mentioned. May I ask who your Samuel Vaughn married? We are talking James T. & Samuel (sons of George Washington Vaughn and Mary Jane Brown), right? Brenda: Thank you for your tireless efforts in a demanding, thankless job. I monitor the site in hopes of uncovering more of what is really a depth of information on my Vaughan family there. I noticed Sandra's mention of the name Shook; one J.H. Shook was a among a number of Tish CO residents who vouched for my g-grandfather's Civeil War pension applied to the state of Texas in 1923 (which was ultimately approved). I have also noted the name of one C.C. Shook, listed as first mayor of Belmont. For your information, my late mother left me with a quaint little "Pixie Album" compiled by James T. Vaughan, a younger brother of my g-gf Samuel A. Vaughan containing mostly Tish CO family members, but several apparently unrelated locals intrigingly including one E. W. Carmack. As near as I can ascertain this Carmack founded in 1844 the Euclid Academy south of Jacinto which was in 1870 relocated to the courthouse once it was closed. I believe James T. was a school teacher in Belmont, which would explain a possible friendship with Carmack? Other family names (and photos or tintypes in the album) includes McRae, Reagan, Moody, plus Wells and Roland. Carmack, McRae, Moody and Vaughan were names found at the UMiss library as members of CO A, 2nd Miss Inf. Reg. In addition, several of the other signatories on the pension petition crop up in local Tish history. If anyone is interested in these and other names or care to see the pictures from the album, I will be happy to put them on line. Two of my cousins have made direct contact with remaining Vaughan connections down your way, but I haven't yet ventured east of Oxford.
