    3. Thank you for the posting of the obits. In August, 2002 you posted the obit of my ggggrandmother Sallie Holman Barnett. I was wondering if you have archived the obit of her husband JT Barnett (John Thaddeus) that died November 22, 1900 in the same place Iuka, MS? Thanks in advance for letting me know. Val. ----- Original Message ----- From: Mickie Aday To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, July 03, 2004 10:43 AM Subject: [MSTISHOM-L] Obituary - Mrs. Johnnie Byram Byram, Mrs. John The Vidette - November 22, 1894 Died - Mrs. Johnnie Byram, wife of Uncle Johnnie Byram, came to a very sudden death last Tuesday. She was sitting in a chair in front of her husband conversing with him when suddenly she was stricken with something like paralysis and fell dead at his feet. Mrs. Byram was nearly 82 years old from the best information we can get and she and her husband are among the oldest settlers of Tishomingo county. The news will be received with profound regret all over the county. She was in Iuka with her husband a few weeks ago while he was there attending his duties as commissioner of election, and it seemed that the two old people were greatly devoted to each other. It must have been a great shock to her husband, and the Vidette extends its sympathy to him in his sad bereavement. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Take Yahoo! Mail with you! 2. In a message dated 7/3/2004 10:58:33 AM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: On the 27th of last month, Miss Ella Kay died at her father’s house 6 miles north-west of Iuka, Miss. Ella was about 26 years old and was a member of the Methodist church. Weep not, father, your daughter has gone to join her mother in the sweet by and by. Brothers and sisters prepare to meet your sisters in the land of the blest. You will hear Ella’s voice no more around the fireside; the Master has said, come up higher. I dunno about the rest of you in this caring and unselfish organization, but I find these shared Vidette Obits fascinating and deserving of comment. Whoever was writing these should have been a recognized wordsmith and-or resident poet... and I wonder if anyone would know their identity. In all probability it was a two or three person operation with two writers and a typesetter and the publisher usually wore several hats; Editor, writer, reporter, et. al. Is the Editor's name on the publication? No big deal, just an admiring fan reflecting on "how it used to be done" with grace and feeling. Thank you Mildred for your efforts and dedication. 3. One of the many possibilities is, he died at someother location and was returned to Tishomingo county for burial. My thoughts are based on the following data in my family tree. There is a family story about a member of my family tree, who went to texas with her husband and hated the area and wanted to be buried back home in Jones County, MS. Her husband returned her body back to MS by horse and wagon. This would have been a 1200 mile + trip in the 1870's. supported data. She is recorded as living in Texas on the 1870 census. She buried in the family cemetery in Jones county in 1873. [no day or month] Her husband signed a deed to some land in Jones County, MS, he sold in July 1873. Her husband is buried in the family cemetery in Texas in 1878. There is no supported data on her death as to time and place. There are unsupported stories of her death like "she died of accidental drowning, while at home in MS" "she was killed by her husband" for various reasons like she refused to go back to Texas with him. 1. Obituary - W. B. McGehee
    2. Mickie Aday
    3. McGehee, W. B. The Vidette - December 20, 1894 Death of Sheriff W. B. McGehee Once again the people of our town have been called to perform the solemn funeral rite to one of her most prominent citizens. Last Friday morning, December 14, at 25 minutes before four oclock Sheriff W. B. McGehee fell into his last and dreamless sleep. He had suffered twenty-one days of typhoid fever and at last succumbed to the malady, notwithstanding the anxious and careful attention of physicians, friends and relatives. His funeral service was conducted at the home of the family by Rev. Mr. Parks, of Corinth. His remains were then taken charge of and interred at the cemetery under the auspices of the Masons and Knights of Pythias, of which orders he was a loved and honored member. The great throng of people who followed his body to its last resting place gave token of the high esteem in which he was held by his friends and fellow citizens. Mr. McGehee was born in Tishomingo county, near Burnt Mills, on the 18th day of June, 1850. His father died when he was only two years old, and his older brother, George, died in the year 1862, leaving him at the age of 14 to support the family. He made farming his vocation until 21, when he began to teach in the public schools of the county. About this time he joined the Presbyterian church and was elected elder. In 1874 he married Miss Alice A. Heffington, who made him a most estimable and affectionate wife, and still survives him. He followed teaching as a profession for about 12 years, when he was appointed Deputy Sheriff under Mr. Wash Mobley. When Mr. Mobleys term of office expired he was employed by P. W. Patterson as Deputy Chancery Clerk. After this he kept books for Dr. Tankerslys mill, 12 miles south-east of Iuka. In 1889 he was elected by an overwhelming majority to the office of Sheriff of this county, and two years later succeeded himself, receivi! ng more votes than all his opponents combined. This office he filled up to the time of his death. He leaves a family of eight children, a loving wife and an aged mother. He also has a sister living in Texas to mourn his loss. He died trusting in the merits of the blood of the Savior and hoping to meet his loved ones and friends beyond the river. He was a loved and loving father, husband, brother, son and friend, who will always have a green place in the memory of all who knew him. If the Vidette were asked what it conceived to be his greatest virtue, we should answer without hesitation, his devotion and fidelity to friendship. He believed one who could betray a friend could prove false to his country, his family, and his God. May his crowning virtue be commemorated and engraved in marble and perpetrated in letters of Gold. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! Mail - Send 10MB messages!

    3. Mickie, Is there any mention in the Vidette before 1900 regarding the death of Lucy Streetman, dau. of Jasper Joshua Streetman? She would have been born between about 1884 and 1900. She was dead before 1900. I am hoping there's some mention in the Vidette between 1900 and 1910 pertaining to the deaths of: Doshia "Dosie" Streetman, died probably c.1904 at approximately 13 or 14 years of age, dau. of Jasper Streetman. Nancy E. (Davis) Grisham/Grissom - born 1834, widow of Samuel Y. Grisham. She applied 1900 for a Confederate Widow's Pension, and lived with Jasper Streetman. Not sure if she's on the 1900 census with him or not. I could not find her in 1910, so she probably died before then. Hope the Vidette can shed some light on this. I had never thought of checking the Vidette at all, until you mentioned it in these posts.... I also need to find someone down there locally who could look up records for me. Hope you know someone I could contact. Thanks, Will Wolfman's Genealogy Page http://web.infoave.net/~wolfman My Civil War portrait album at Camp Chase Gazette: http://www.campchase.com/WillSmith.htm

    3. Mickie: Keep up the good work. One in each email is what I can use best,[approved by you and Cindy Nelson] because I am printing them for the Surname files and may include them in a booklet to be a genealogical research tool in the Archives research room. However, it will not create any problems if you do list several together, so my vote is for you to post them, the way it is easiest for you to do it. With your approval, we will extract the names of doctors, undertakers and anyother data that fits in our new Town and Communities room upstairs in the Archives. Sometimes, drop by the Archives for a visit and I will gladly show you how we are using your death certificate information.
