I am trying to find information about my great grandfather, CEPHAS (or JOSEPHAS or simply JOSEPH) WHEELOCK. He was born 3 Apr 1792 in Heath MA (son of John Wheelock and Dorothy Wilder). The name Cephas appears on his baptismal record. The information I have suggests that he died 1874 in Iuka MS, and during 1827-1854 I think he resided in Huntsville AL and/or Eastport MS. The McCULLOUGHs in my family have also turned up in Mississippi and Alabama, and especially Arkansas, so I am on the lookout for them also. If anybody has any possibilities, I'd be most grateful to know about them. Jack Wheelock McCullough
John, Yes, I can give you help in your family tree research. The first problem is, where were they living in Tishomingo County, MS in April of 1870. Alcorn and Prentiss was carved out the western part of old tishominog county on 15 april 1870. The land that was left in the eastern part kept the name Tishomingo County. So if the Streetman family was "new" tishimongo county, it is possible to find them. I need all the data, you have on the Streetmans, birthdays, marriages and etc. send me a email to [email protected] and we will get the ball rolling. I have sketchy info that John Rutledge Streetman and his wife, Elizabeth Jane Clay were married in Itawamba County, MS in September 1849 and moved to Tishomingo sometime before 1870. Jasper Streetman was my great-grandfather, through his son Lee Ander who moved to Little Rock, Arkansas. I understand Jasper's wife was a Marsha Grisham, dau. of a Sam. Y. I have just read Aaron's comments and share them completely. It's great to read obits done "with grace and feeling," and we are fortunate to have them made so easily available through Mildred's fine efforts. I find myself compelled to read many of them completely, even when they show no apparent connection to my own family. I hope sometime WHEELOCK or McCULLOUGH names may crop up, especially CEPHAS or JOSEPHAS WHEELOCK who probably died in Iuka in 1874 and may be buried in Eastport. Thanks for all your help. Jack

Yes, I've noticed that in the old days those who wrote obits did so in such a respectful, almost poetic, manner. Families and communities were so much more close-knit back then than they are today and that is to our shame. I cringe over the dreadful grammar in today's newspapers, and especially over the callousness of today's obituaries.
