    3. Sandy, I have found land records in several states, and they have been very helpful. To see the originals, you need to go to the county courthouse and ask where they are kept. In every courthouse in which I've looked, there are indexes to the deeds, both by grantor (seller) and grantee (buyer). For many counties, these indexes are online, frequently on the county's GenWeb site. When they are, you can check before going to the courthouse to make sure your ancestors actually had land dealings in that county. As to how far back they go, well, that depends. In theory they should go back to the formation of the parent county (or counties) - which means your ancestors were there before the change in county lines you may have to check more than one county. Over time, however, some records have been lost, whether to fire, theft or something else. Maybe I've been lucky - most of the ones I've searched for have been available! I haven't yet gotten to any Mississippi courthouses, but plan a trip at the end of this month. I'll be looking in Tishomingo, Itawamba, Lee and Alcorn, at least, and if I have time, in a few others, as well. While in the courthouses, don't forget to ask about wills, which, when available, are great resources! Also, for many counties, abstracts of the deeds in the early land records have been published in book form. Check with the county libraries in the relevant counties, and with the local historical and genealogical societies. Some times you can get copies on interlibrary loan. There are also libraries around the country which have good collections of materials, including published books, for not only their own area but also neighboring states. I know the Birmingham Public Library and the Tuscaloosa Public Lib rary (both in Alabama) have good collections of materials on all the southeastern states, for instance. Just jump in feet first and have a good time with this. We sere all rookies at one time! Margaret Lindsey Smith

I am researching the Boothe-Higginbottom family in Tishomingo County. I donot have any problem with the Boothe family, I have it documented as for as tish co. According to family stories, John E Boothe Married Ida Higginbottom born 20 Dec 1877. Ida's [Mae/May] brothers and sisters are Roscoe, Randle, Nina Pearl and William Nash. My problem is; the family stories state; Ida's fathers name is unknown and Ida's Mother is believed to be Clista Jane [Mamie}Mills. The family stories do include Ida's Mother second marriage was to a Ford. In the 1892 school records,Township 3, no range given. In the household of Higinbotham, C. there is a female named I, 14 years old, which matches the family stories of birth year. other children are, NP, age 12, female, which could be Nina Pearl MR age 10, male, Which could be Roscoe RL age 8. Male, which could be Randel L WN age 6, Male, which could be William Nash The way the above children are listed supports the family stories list of oldest to the youngest in birth order. I need to add one more thing, which will add to the confusion. The Household of John E Boothe in the 1900 census has John and Ida married 6 years, which would make the marriage year, 1894. However, In the 1894 school list , there is no I, in the Higinbotham household. but there is one in the JG Boothe Household, which is John E's father. John E is listed as 18 and there is a I, listed as 16 years old. This I, does not appear anywhere in any census record or any other document concerning the JG Boothe Household. 3. I'm still a bit of a rookie in all this. I "hear" a lot about land deeds. How far back can you find them and how and where would I find this information. My grandparents owned pazrt of what is now Coleman Park near Iuka. In fact, there is a road called Willie Hindman that goes in front of the old home place. I guess I should try to get down that way and get pictures of the sign and land -- if it still has the same name. Guess I need a tutor! 1. RE: [MSTISHOM-L] Streetman family in Tishomingo County, MS
    2. John Streetman
    3. George, They always told me that gg granddaddy John lived on a farm almost exactly across the road from Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery near Burnsville. Might explain why most all of them are buried there. I would assume that was pretty close to Alcorn County line. When was Alcorn County carved out of Tishomingo? Are there any old land deeds left from that time frame, or did they all burn up when the courthouse burned down? I'd love to find John Streetman's old land deeds, and Jasper's too if possible. George Pearson <[email protected]> wrote: John, Yes, I can give you help in your family tree research. The first problem is, where were they living in Tishomingo County, MS in April of 1870. Alcorn and Prentiss was carved out the western part of old tishominog county on 15 april 1870. The land that was left in the eastern part kept the name Tishomingo County. So if the Streetman family was "new" tishimongo county, it is possible to find them. I need all the data, you have on the Streetmans, birthdays, marriages and etc. send me a email to [email protected] and we will get the ball rolling. 1. Re: [MSTISHOM-L] WHEELOCK and McCULLOUGH
    2. George, Yes, all the variant spellings are worth considering. I have two known ancestors named William, neither of whom quite fit the one you mention. Mine are WILLIAM S. McCULLOUGH (1843?, Wooster OH; d. 26 Dec 1915, Hot Springs AR) He was my great grandfather. His youngest son was also named William (b. after 1880; d. 27 Sep 1918, Conway AR). As far as I can determine, William S. was the first of my line to go to the South. He was stationed at DeValls Bluff during the Civil War as a Captain in the Union forces. He returned there after the war to supervise the Freedmens Bureau and then settled in Brinkley where he was a farmer, attorney, hotel owner and postmaster. The eldest of his four sons, Roy, was an attorney in Birmingham AL. His son, Jack, my grandfather, was a teacher and school administrator in Arkansas and Colorado. I know almost nothing about the two youngest sons, Hunter and William, Jr. Thanks again for you help. Jack

    1. Re: [MSTISHOM-L] WHEELOCK and McCULLOUGH
    2. George, your information is most welcome. Many thanks. Here's the information about my grandmother's family line, which is the one I'm exploring: I am JACK WHEELOCK McCULLOUGH (b. 26 May 1931, Denver CO). -----I am son of JAY WHEELOCK McCULLOUGH (b. 22 May 1900, Clarendon AR; d. 29 May 1980, Louisville KY). -----He was son of JOSEPHINE WHEELOCK (b. 13 July 1876, Clarendon AR; d. 7 Jan 1968, Louisville KY) -----She was daughter of JOSEPH LAFAYETTE WHEELOCK (b. 21 Feb 1832, Clarendon AR; d. 11 Mar 1876. Josephine and her sister Kate were adopted by Joseph Lafayette's brother Jay McKendrie Wheelock, since their father died four months before they were born.) -----He was son of CEPHAS or JOSEPHAS WHEELOCK (b. 3 Apr 1792, Heath MA; d. 1874, Iuka MS. Birth of Josephas is recorded in MA vital records with a note that "Cephas" appears in church records.) CEPHAS married twice: -----First: on 1 Jan 1910 in Conway MA [not AR] he married Abigail C. Beal, 23 Dec 1788-16 Aug 1854. Their children included: Augustin Maria, Caleb Beal, John, Joseph, Dorothy, George, and Abigail, all born in Conway MA. -----Second: on 2 may 1854 in Jericho VT he married Mehitable Spaulding. I have no information about Mehitable, but her children with Cephas include: John, Susan B. (married William Simons), Cornelia (married __ Hickman), Elizabeth (married __ Collyer), Lucinda Ann, Mathilda Jane, JOSEPHINE, Joseph Lafayette (married Louisa Jane Counts; see above); Alonzo[?], Jerome E. (JOSEPHINE and her sister Kate shared in his estate.), Jay McKendrie (married Mary E. Counts; adopted JOSEPHINE and Kate) Cephas is the only name I can tie to Iuka or Eastport, but my information is sketchy, and some of it is questionable. I am very interested in tracing the movement of the family from Massachusetts to Mississippi, Alabama and Arkansas. My Wheelock and McCullough lines converged in Arkansas, in the Clarendon-Brink ley-DeValls Bluff area, and I have discovered quite a bit about that history. Now I need to back up a bit. Again, many thanks for your help. I'll be grateful for anything that crops up in the future. Jack

Hey My Friend, I invite you to read again my feeble attempt at recognizing a talent for portraying feelings with words. That seems to approach the "need to understand" those wonderful people of that period. I was complimenting the writer for "how it used to be done with grace and feeling." and certainly there was no thought or suggestion of intimitating that the person was a professional. I just simply felt moved to comment on a unique talent. I owe life and meaning to a long line of Farm Wives and Mothers and have personal knowledge of their abilities for putting heart and soul into what they did. I'm sure your grandmother was no exception.

    3. I don't know about these but I have a collection of obits for my Berryman and Fryar relatives in MS and my grandmother wrote them all, except her own of course. They were works of art that came from the heart. She was a farm wife and mother, not a professional writer as you suggest. What we need to understand is that people of that time put heart and soul into what they did. It was life as we do not know it. It was about family and faith and scratching out a living along the way. No soft serve, no fast food. Just quality, just life. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, July 03, 2004 1:43 PM Subject: Re: [MSTISHOM-L] Obituary - Miss Ella Kay > In a message dated 7/3/2004 10:58:33 AM Central Standard Time, > [email protected] writes: > > On the 27th of last month, Miss Ella Kay died at her father’s house 6 miles > north-west of Iuka, Miss. 1. Account of The Death of Two Children - 1895
    2. Mickie Aday
    3. The Vidette January 31, 1895 Two Children Drowned Short, Miss., Jan. 21, 1895 By request I send you a corrected statement and as near as possible the full details of the sad accident that occurred near here on Monday evening, the 14th inst. About 4:40 near the mouth of Indian creek. In the morning Mr. R. W. Busby and his little girl Ivy, aged seven years; myself and three of my children, Roxie, aged 10, Frank, aged 8, and Ellen, aged 7, all went down to the backwater. The children and I were on our way to school at Short where I am teaching. Mr. Busby went to assist us across the backwater which was frozen over. He had prepared a raft of two large poplar logs 16 ft long, for the purpose of carrying the children and myself across to school. We succeeded with about two hours hard work in breaking a road through the ice wide enough for the passage of the raft and we all crossed over safely. The children and I went on to school. Mr. Busby carried the raft back and brought over his two oldest girls, Lizzie, aged 16, and! Winnie, aged 14, who were not ready to start school when we did. They also came on to school. In the evening when we got back to the water Mr. Busby was waiting to assist us back across. He stepped on the raft first and walked to the front end; the children all followed and I went on last, eight of us in all. I pushed the raft off with a piece of plank, by placing one end of it against the foot of the hill first, and then by placing the end of the plank against the edge of he ice which was broke in gaps. When about 40 or 50 feet from land, all at once, with a sudden crash the logs broke apart and we all went between the logs into the water which was 10 r 12 feet deep to within two feet of the waters edge, where we struggled between life and death for about 30 minutes trying to save the children. I spent most of the time in trying to keep the log from turning, so they could hold on the log and keep from drowning. The balance of the time, with the exception of what time I spe! nt in saving Roxie, my oldest girl, who came up partly under the log and partly under the ice, I spent in swimming with all who were holding to it, towards land. I had succeeded in getting within about 15 feet of land when Messrs. D Provence, T. B. Milligan, J. N. Busby, D. N. Wood and R. W. Provence, who heard our screams for help at a distance of about a half-mile rushed to our assistance. All were rescued except Frank and Ellen who had sunk to rise no more. I did not know they were missing until we were all on land. Those dear little ones were not found until 7 oclock. W. T. Young --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo!
