Dead Freds is very high on the list of possible ways to go with this project. It would be the the easiest and fasted way to get the photos online. Settiing up and maintaining our own [inhouse] website will take volunteer hours, which we do not have available now. It would be very easy to add a link to Dead Freds from any website. As most everyone knows, The Tishomingo Hist and Gen Society moved into the old court house in Jan of this year. The [genealogical] research library and [history] museum opened to the public on March 6th this year. The Grand opening is scheduled in be part of the Iuka Heritage festival in Sept. We have made many mistakes trying to solve the "growing pains" of a limited amount of space and will make more. But we do our best to profit from our mistakes. Even with all of our mistakes, our [meaning everyone who post data on this website and everyone else] venture is growing by "leaps and bounds". Since Genealogical data of any area in the US, is actually part the history of that area. We decided to name our venture, "Tishomingo County Archives and History Museum". Archices is the name, we use on a daily basis. Since I joined the venture in February, we have spent many hours opening boxes, which has been stored in someone's basement, barns and many other places. We still have a few to left to open. "I have been like a kid opening presents on christmas morning". The above story was told as a background to base the following on: The first decision to be made is; Can we setup and run a photo site on daily basis with the volunteers we have now. That question was answered in the first paragraph of this email. Therefore, if we cannot get a volunteer to run the site on a daily basis, Dead Freds, here we come. As for me, I am very excited about the pictures of both the tombstones and the ancestors that we have not seen before.I live in Alcorn Co. but my grandfather`s families were from Tishomingo Co. and that makes me want to work even harder to provide on hand information for the generations to come. To all that have contributed and worked to provide information,, Thank you & God Bless, Janice

I have used the ANCIENTFACES.COM website to post on, and found it easy and fun to use. Have not been to DEADFRED.COM yet. I am running accross photos from my grandparents and my folks that i have no way of knowing who they all are so I hope some of you folks might recognize some of them. I am fairly certain most are from the Tishomingo CO area. Thanks to all who have been so nice, and so helpful to me. Mr. Pearson, The posting of tombstone photos is the better of two worlds. You get to see the actual headstone/tombstone and you see the data as it has been engraved on the headstone. Transcriptions are great and I thank those that have taken the time to do them. But like all endeavors that have a human part they are subject to errors. Where the photo shows what is actually on the headstone. Boy, have I found my share of errors and having found them I had to change numerous file and data sheets. Since I am some distance from Tishomingo County I would appreciate the posting of headstone photos. It will assist me greatly in my research. I feel that there are many who are great distance who would also appreciate the ability to see the headstone rather than transcribed words. My family migrated to Tishomingo County from Alabama and when Alcorn and Prentiss were extracted from Tishomingo my family wound up in the Prentiss County part. But much of the family history is still there in Tishomingo. I applaud you and the other members of the historical society for the work that you have done. I hope that on my next trip to Mississippi I will be able to spend some time in your excellent facility. Keep up the good work and May God Bless and Keep You. Ray Shamlin Rocky Mount, NC Disagreements without anger constitutes the BEST education of one's life!!!!!! -----Original Message----- From: George Pearson [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, July 14, 2004 8:47 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [MSTISHOM-L] tombstone photo website. I have been asked several times, Why have a tombstone photo web site with all the info posted on the web about cemeteries. I am not try to take anything away from surveying a cemetery because I have "been there and done that". I know what it is to wade thru knee deep grass, briars and bushes looking for another tombstone and more. I [with others] had to take the time to find someone to lead us to an abandoned cemetery, only to find out we had been within 20 to 50 feet from it before durning a 1/2 day trip looking for it. My personal opinion is; Looking at photo of one of my ancesters names on a tombstone makes it much more personal than looking at the same name on a printed list. I guess it proves the old saying "one picture is worth a thousand works" I agree there are those persons, who want nothing more than a printed list. That is their right and which must be respected. But I am in the group that wants a little more. Last, but not least: Takeing tombstone photos with modern digital cameras "lets you see what you are going to get before you get it". So you can be sure, you have the best photo of the tombstone as possible. Sure beats one or more persons trying to figure out what is written on the tombstone, while standing in the hot sun, waist deep in bushes and briars and not knowing if you are standing inches from a rattlesnake or not. In hindsight, I guess the person was right, when I was told, you are crazy to go out there in those bushes and briars just to record names on a tombstone." George: I have found such sites as Dead Fred's to be very user friendly when searching for photos. Perhaps our site could be modeled in some such similar fashion. As I've told you, I know nothing of setting up such a site/web page. I do have a web page on Genealogy.Com, but some magical wizard sort of set did it for me. I have, however, done plenty of photo searching, and I think Dead Fred's is a pretty good example to follow. As I've suggested earlier, is there a possibility that we could post our pics at some such site that's already set up and maintained and then somehow fix a link between that site and our own? wanda

Did you find what you was looking for? I have plans to take a video recorder with me to see Jewel. I want to record her memories of Tishomingo County History. She has a wealth of historical information that needs to be preserved. She has showed me several times where the school was located, but I think I need to draw a map. What is the reason for taking pictures of all the stones?? Or do the Cemetaries just need surveying? That is what we have been doing in Alcorn Co.,Ms Just Survey the Cem. they we put it on spreadsheet and sort them out and forward them to Bobbie Wilson to put on the Alcorn Index. that way if you are looking for a certain person you can go through the Cem.'s in alphibetical order and find them . If there is any additional informatin on the stone we put that also, Mother Father or What Ever is there. Thanks; Janice & Helah > I have plans to take a video recorder with me to see Jewel. Ok, that would be great. Terry
It would be wonderful if someone has the time and the resources as well as the charitable heart it would take to make it work. I'm sure that that is possible because since I have been doing genealogy, one of the best things I have discovered is the sense of community and charity that are so very common in this great bunch of people. It is truly unmatched in any other group of people I have been involved with. I was simply offering a couple of alternatives just in case you needed other ideas. Good luck with this project, and know that you are appreciated. I seem to recall that my father may have gone to Holloway School....If so, it would have been between 1936 and 1949...He was Willie Robert Smith, and everyone called him "Wee Willie" because he was so small. I do know he mentioned "Holloway" on several occasions. He attended Holcut also.
